Just shooting the storm from my back yard, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.
I believe this was the evening that a great deal of air traffic from Los Angeles was diverted to our international airport & the one in Phoenix - due to a power outage at LAX.
Lightning over Pretoria. Just sat at a good vantage point, camera on high speed and kept the finger on focus. Missed a lot, but caught five strikes. Photos with Olympus OMD-EM5. Cropped and level adjustment. Pretoria, South Africa. 12 November 2013
Zooming in on this picture will show the detail in the lightning. Much better detail than I expected.
Taking pictures of lightning requires patience, patience I don't have... Unlike most of my subjects, I couldn't just waiting for lightning to strike then hit the shutter... By the time the picture would be taken, the lightning would be gone. So basically you really have to anticipate the lightning occurring BEFORE it actually does, but even then that doesn't always produce a picture of lightning...
Of the three pictures I took at this location, all of them got some lightning in the shot, but one was too blurry for posting... so that's a 66% success rate, pretty good for a first-timer, huh?
A lot of the big trees on the park have been struck by lightning. This one has the characteristic screw pattern of scorched, dead wood going down it.
I got this shot of one of the myriad of lightning strikes during last night's impressive electric storm!
I set the aperture to f/5 and 'bulb' on the shutter speed and kept my finger on the button!! There were so many lightning strikes I hoped I'd catch one but I got two ! This one is nice as it's not so huge and bright as the other.
Apart from a little tweaking in Photoshop to reveal finer detail, this is pretty much how it came out of the camera.
Lightning, thunder and heavy rain shower this evening .... thank goodness I always have a camera ready for these perfect opportunities. It is not so easy to take photos of lightning, but after a few attempts I managed to capture these from the front door looking towards the woodland trees. The whole show was over in minutes so I'm glad I got a few pics at least.
