Luckily there wasn't much rain at this time... would have been nice if I had my tripod though!

This was a lightning strike I captured during perhaps the worst storm I have ever endured. My family and I were on the way to Chicago, and had to stop at a rest stop because the storm was so intense. This was one of a few good shots I got from the storm.

I used my low-end Canon digital camera (unfortunately set to a low resolution) and a 15 second exposure to capture this bolt

Lightning strike across the valley.

These pictures are my first attempt at shooting lightning. Electrical storms were a real rarity when I lived in the Bay Area, but apparently are more common here in Colorado. This was an incredible storm and we rushed out of the house with no tripod or shutter release. I experimented with different settings and used the roof of the car or a fence post to set the camera on. It was a really fun night!

during the giant storm of thousands of dry lightning strikes that caused this week's fires

Lightning captured in Wilgeheuwel on the West Rand of Johannesburg.

There was a lightning storm a couple days ago and this was the only glimpse of the lightning I managed to take a picture of. I just thought I should post it.

Talking pictures of lightning is challenging for many different reasons. One of the problems I had was not knowing when the next strike would occur, I had to wait and get the timing perfect. Also since it was pitch black dark I had to use manual focus, however, whenever I use manual focus I don't know if the shot will turn out focused or blurry, especially in the dark where I can't get a good idea on what is focused and what's not. Also I wasn't sure what kind of exposure time I should use, using a long exposure time I ran the risk of making the lightning look to bright, with a short exposure time I ran the risk of making the picture too dark.
