Lightning over Perth, Western Australia. This was a storm that came out of the blue on 1st March 2017, and one that was a long time coming. No decent storms in Perth since 2015!
Lightning over Miami at Sunset. Shot from the deck of the Majesty of the Seas cruise ship on June 18, 2010 with a Ricoh GRD3 f9, 28mm, 4, ISO 64, RAW
Middle Tennessee has had some crazy weather with 6 1/2" of rain with flash floods and amazing lightning. Nothing like ending July with a bang! I wish I had taken out my camera for better quality. This was taken with my iPhone 15 pro max. July 2024
In late July of 2016 we were treated to some insanely beautiful and powerful lightning displays in the midwest. By all accounts I probably should be dead from having been this close!
Taken 29Jul14 near Santa Fe, New Mexico. This is a 7 stacked image taken from a timelapse clip: www.flickr.com/photos/79387036@N07/25158950986/in/album-7.. thus the lower resolution.
As you can tell, two separate cells created to distinct lightning displays. However, subtracting just one image: www.flickr.com/photos/79387036@N07/36391335656/in/photost... can dramatically change the entire scene. Masting can help but not with very bright flashes.
I'm never sure how many stacked images are just right.
We had a bit of a storm pass over last night, so I thought that I would give it a go and get some lightning shots - something I have never done before. Not the best, but I was pleased to at least capture a few bolts.
These shots were taken with a very old (and beaten up) Nikon D200. A long story, but I got it to see how good the older CCD sensors were compared to later CMOS versions....
This was Friday night and the first time I've tried shooting lightning. I was out for about an hour before it started to rain. The lights are from the Hampton Roads Tunnel. I posted a timelapse sort of deal with all the shots animated in sequence (~6 meg flash file, less than a minute runtime). The shot above is an HDR from one RAW file.

Distant lightning flash illuminated the clouds during the Persiad Meteor shower. This was early in the evening as a small storm moved through the area.
Photographed from high up in the dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado. This is facing Northwest towards Mt. Blanca. There is one distant meteor just above the lower peak.
Unexpected late season post-monsoonal thunderstorms produced a number of impressive anvil crawlers. This is a 3-stacked composite image.

According to some sciencey-types on Reddit (the internet provides) lightning strikes create strong electromagnetic fields for many kilometers.
Lightning Show from our hotel window in Indianapolis. What a wonderful display to the south for more than an hour. Unfortunately I didn't have a tripod, but tried my best to improvise.
#doodlewashJune2019 prompt: Lightning. Miya himi gouache on Stonehenge Aqua Coldpress Black @legionpaper @miyaarts
Left: Canon Powershot, using chdk motion detect script. Right: iPhone using iLightningCam app.
They were both triggering based on motion detection, and caught the same bolt. The angle is different because they were in different windows several feet apart.
I decided to go back and stack the first lightning shots that I captured close to a year ago. I didn't know about this software at that time. This is 7 different shots at 30 second exposures each.
Lightning exercise: In this shot with a diffuse flash from the front. I admit, I have some wrinkles ironed smooth. :)

This is another single exposure of a lightning bolt that looks like it has made contact with the spire at Camp Hill Primary School!
ISO 200 | 1/200 sec | f/8 | 7mm
Took these after storm passed. My first attempt at lightning photos. Taken in eastern South Dakota within a wind turbine farm. The picture was not cropped at all; just pure luck that the bolt was perfectly centered in the frame.

Lightning viewed from Jersey City, New Jersey looking towards New York City.
Nikon Coolpix 8700 - HDR [4 exposures]
I caught this lightning at my house during a seriously electrified t-storm. When i glanced at the preview for it i thought there was a rain drop on my lens and was bummed. when i checked the lens, there wasn't a drop at all. This image is not manipulated in any way and would love to know what 'type' of lightning this is... i have never seen lightning like this and google has failed me :(
English Electric Lightning F.Mk.3 XR713 shows off its dual identify; its starboard side depicting the bright red check tail carried by 56 squadron towards the end of their time with the Lightnings and its port side in the distinctive 111 squadron colours. Who could ask for more. Just simply stunning!
The record breaking and world famous Catatumbo lightning at Maracaibo´s lake
El mundialmente famoso y record Guinness rayo del Catatumbo
Camera: Nikon D300S
Lens: 10.5 Fisheye f/2.8
Shot at f/22 for 30 seconds.
This is 1 shot and not an HDR.
I wasn't happy how the fisheye captured this entire shot. I had to crop a few times and remove some of the distortion of the fisheye lens. This shot was actually taken during blue hour, but the storm coming in was pretty rough, right after this shot was taken the sky opened up.
This was taken from Empire Fulton Ferry State Park. The bridge you see there is the Manhattan bridge from the Brooklyn side.
