Favorite Image 2020 - A summer storm on June 10th in Clevland gave me a rare opportunity to capture a lightning strike on a background of a double rainbow.
Despite twilight and fast moving storm, I managed to get a relatively nice lightning composite using 7 stacked frames.

Lightning struck this tree and exploded the trunk. Tree bark and wood were thrown quite a distance. For more pictures of the damage visit:

Wonderful summer storms today and this evening, a nice spread of lightning across the sky tonight. Taken from near my house.
The first Royal Air Force Lockheed-Martin F -35B Lightning II stands proud in fine company with the Royal Air Force Red Arrows at the Royal international Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford.
Dark skies provide the perfect background for this rainbow and lightning (stack of 7 frames from video clip).
We had a bit of a storm pass over last night, so I thought that I would give it a go and get some lightning shots - something I have never done before. Not the best, but I was pleased to at least capture a few bolts.
These shots were taken with a very old (and beaten up) Nikon D200. A long story, but I got it to see how good the older CCD sensors were compared to later CMOS versions....
Out late on a cloudy night, I was hoping the clouds might break so I could get a glimpse of Neowise. No luck at first, but heat lightning started all around, so I decided to set up camera and take a few shots to see if I could get the right timing, playing with settings to get a decent shutter speed that would capture the lightning well. I finally got a shot, and upon in-camera review I noticed a hazy green object with a tail. I had just happened to point the camera in the right position! Such a happy coincidence.
What an incredible way to end summer, with a nice thunder storm!! It's been hot here (upper 80's) with 90 degree temps forecast for tomorrow. We did get some much neede rain from this storm. In fact, there was minor flooding! Three fires were started locally by lightning!
PS: This is my first attempt at shooting lightning. There are some things I'd do different for the next round. I had a LOT of totally white or totally black shots. LOL! Always learning.
- www.kevin-palmer.com - This is a picture I've been wanting to take for a long time. The severe and slow moving thunderstorms were producing a crazy amount of lightning. I couldn't get any pictures before the storm hit. But after the rain stopped around 11pm I drove to a dead end road nearby to get some pictures. Most of the lightning was not striking the ground so I felt relatively safe.
Lightning from an approaching storm reaches down to the surface of Lake Michigan near the lighthouses on the pier at Grand Haven State Park in Grand Haven, Michigan.
There was a large severe weather outbreak in the Great Lakes region on Wednesday. For only the third time in the past dozen years there has been a "High Risk" for severe weather.
There were so many stormchasers in the areas of the worst of the weather, so my brother and I headed to the lakeshore just to get some photos of the storms coming across the lake.
Grand Haven State Park looked pretty good, as the storms were passing to the north and south of our position, so we weren't going to get hit directly. In fact, the there was hardly any rain until around 10.00pm, when a storm came right over us. We got soaked getting to the car, but weren't in any danger.
(Note: I've been chasing storms since the mid 1980's, so I'm fairly confident that I know what I'm doing. No one should do storm chasing for the "heck of it". It's dangerous, even for the real storm chasers.)
A thunderstorm started on the other side of the river - a perfect occasion to set my tripod on the balcony and try some luck.
My setup for capturing lightning is dead simple - I go manual and set an exposure time of a few seconds, choosing an appropriate aperture (5.6 or 8, with ISO 100). Now, just pull the trigger and have hope :). The ambient gets underexposed by 2-3 stops, while any lightning occuring during the exposure is captured perfectly - it is very short, yet bright enough to burn into the image.
The image hit Explore at #29. Thanks everybody!
Taken between 1:30 and 1:40am BST from Oxfordshire, UK with a Canon 1100D and standard lens. Single shot, ISO100 for 15 seconds

While watching a storm rotating and trying to drop a tornado. The lightning started to ramp up. i probably watching 30-50 bolts hit around in in five minutes.

This photo was taken a few years ago in North Richland Hills. Building in the fore ground is the Church of Christ, in the background, where the lightning is striking is downtown Fort Worth. The Camera used was an Olympus OMG 35mm film camera using Kodak ISO 100 Film. The Exposure is unknown. Scanned from negative with a Canon Canonscan 8600F scanner.

Middle Tennessee has had some crazy weather with 6 1/2" of rain with flash floods and amazing lightning. Nothing like ending July with a bang! July 2024
This capture from last night is made up from three separate long exposures blended together. After the third capture the lightning had all but stopped and the rain was starting to fall.
