Mother Nature put on the most amazing show this particular evening - Zeus kept tossing bolts from this storm for a few hours, from sunset until well into the night.
Practice. Practice. Practice.
In case it rains on vacation I want to be ready to shoot lightning Tricky little devil
In late July of 2016 we were treated to some insanely beautiful and powerful lightning displays in the midwest. By all accounts I probably should be dead from having been this close!
A somewhat successful storm chase in July. Would have been a perfect stormy night had there been less clouds to capture more like this. Unfortunately with all the overcast, it blocked most all of the awesomeness of a storm loaded with endless potential.
Lightning struck this tree and exploded the trunk. Tree bark and wood were thrown quite a distance. For more pictures of the damage visit:
Composite of 9 separate lightning images, all long exposures with 6D and 40mm pancake. I've blended the most dramatic sky and many of the lightning bolts into this one image. There are also light trails from an airplane above, and from several boats in the water below. Just an experiment. What do you think, yay or nay?

A Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 lens was used.
The best 17 images taken during a 10 minute period were stacked for this version.
Nice to be at the right place at the right time. Been many times here, the right but at the wrong time, especially when the derecho came through:)

Dark skies provide the perfect background for this rainbow and lightning (stack of 7 frames from video clip).
Despite twilight and fast moving storm, I managed to get a relatively nice lightning composite using 7 stacked frames.

What an incredible way to end summer, with a nice thunder storm!! It's been hot here (upper 80's) with 90 degree temps forecast for tomorrow. We did get some much neede rain from this storm. In fact, there was minor flooding! Three fires were started locally by lightning!
PS: This is my first attempt at shooting lightning. There are some things I'd do different for the next round. I had a LOT of totally white or totally black shots. LOL! Always learning.
Caught a storm cloud brewing by the mountains just right after sunset. Best light show I have seen. 2016 ©maouy
its kind of a pain in the ass to capture lightning strikes. i now have a new found appeciation for it.
A thunderstorm started on the other side of the river - a perfect occasion to set my tripod on the balcony and try some luck.
My setup for capturing lightning is dead simple - I go manual and set an exposure time of a few seconds, choosing an appropriate aperture (5.6 or 8, with ISO 100). Now, just pull the trigger and have hope :). The ambient gets underexposed by 2-3 stops, while any lightning occuring during the exposure is captured perfectly - it is very short, yet bright enough to burn into the image.
The image hit Explore at #29. Thanks everybody!
Taken from my front doorstep in last nights thunderstorm at 1.00am. Took repeated 20 second exposure controlled by Hahnel Combi TF. I love storms! Hottest and most humid day of the year yesterday - more predicted today but during daylight this time.
Unexpected late season post-monsoonal thunderstorms produced a number of impressive anvil crawlers. This is a 3-stacked composite image.
Lightning storm looking out from Cape Panwa at the south of Phuket Thailand towards the island of Ko Mai Thon and the Andaman Sea.
Yesterday morning was amazing to say the least. The combination of stunning sunrise and thunderstorm, both at the same time is something I have never witnessed before and the short drive from my house down to the harbour was very surreal. This is a shot I have been trying to get for several years but conditions have never worked in my favour until now. Ideally for capturing lightning it would have been better had it not been so bright but then I wouldn't have had the nice light on the tower and quayside. There was actually a much more powerful lightning strike literally 2 seconds before I hit the start button for my timelapse (I didn't swear much...honest) but I was pleased to get this strike shortly after.
