For many of us former farm boys, when we are young and involved in forced labor on family farms we seldom noticed the nuances of our parent’s lives. At that age we were normally self-centered enough that everything going on around us was only considered in how it might affect us, not others.
As I have spent time pondering on my growing up years, I now understand some things about my dad I totally missed when I was a young kid running around with my red Heinie shaped with Butch Wax.
My dad lived through the Great Depression and knew hard times. It was not until he sold the family farm and retired that he had money left over at the end of the month but by that time my seven siblings and I were long gone and working on our own fortunes.
Though he lived very financially conservative, that did not mean he did not have some wants that often expressed longingly in relaxed Sunday afternoon conversations. One of those desires of his was for a “long truck”. I am guessing he differentiated a long truck from a shorter pickup as he already had one of those.
He ended up procuring a 1937 Chevrolet truck with no sideboards from someone who saw him coming. He soon built sideboards and an end gate and promptly painted them barn red which went along pretty well with the scratched deep blue cab.
The truck had a previous life though and by the time he got hold of it the springs in the seat were a threat to anyone with a bony hind-end. One of the other bad habits it had was the motor had a mind of its own and was reluctant to start on cue. To get it started it often had to be pulled by a tractor while someone inside steered and at the appropriate time “pop” the clutch.
He used that old truck for more than a decade, another example of always making do with what he had. In that truck he hauled countless pigs, cattle and also grains to and from harvest fields and into the local elevator. It finally reached the end of dad’s patience and was parked by the yard-light pole for a few years.
One day dad asked one of my older brothers to help him pull it out into the groove and park it under some huge cottonwood trees where it would eventually sit until I moved on and went to college.
The truck had one last experience to share though. As my dad sat on the tractor pulling the truck, my older brother was steering it when all of a sudden the truck door flew open and my brother went running helter-skelter yelling bloody murder.
Remember those exposed springs? A nest of bumble bees had found a new home unknown to my brother and there was a sore ending to the story.
This is a view of a light pole on display at Luminaria in Lehi, Utah. It looks a little like a field of stars or the view right before a jump to light speed.
14 pigeons perch atop a street light pole in the early morning hours. I shot this with my phone and took the raw image into my creative workflow for an interesting result.
"All right, soldiers, advance on that dastardly light pole over on the right and destroy it with your rays. This idiot has no Photoshop and can't clone it out himself!"
NO INVITES OR ICONS
A pillar of the sun. In the cold weather, a red or orangeous light pole forms above the sun as the sun leaps and sets. It's created by ice crystals found in the air.
I took this through a window in the Chicago Cultural Center which has a great view of Millennium Park. This is the northwest corner of Millennium Park known as Wrigley Square.

RED SKY by Mihailsk,
the September exhibition @ Nitroglobus (dido's part of the gallery)
He's back with 8 great works, which are situated at dido's part of Nitroglobus. I am glad Miha said yes when I asked him to fill 'my part' of the gallery.
As all Miha's works exhibited have in common they are situated under a red sky, I 'dressed' the gallery hall likewise with red light poles, one throwing it's red light on Nitro's sculpture 'HIGH 'EMOTIONS and ..., moreover, red/purple cloud trees with ditto growing clouds under the floor, which Venus Adored made especially for me (//me blows a kiss to Venus whispering 'thank you')
I invite you all to visit and feel the warmth and emotions displayed..

Desciption by Mihailsk:
The color red symbolizes intense situations and emotions but at the same time it indicates warning and danger.
My red sky is a sky which reflects strong human emotions, covering them like a blanket and thus giving a sense of safety and hope.
Danger, longing, visualization, power, love, pain, balance, joy.: eight human moments under the red sky.
THE EXHIBITION IS OPEN, SO COME AND VISIT.
(no opening party coz of holiday)
I find many light poles during the Christmas season. This one was set up at the Riverwoods Mall in Provo and made an interesting lightscape.
Not far from the antenna is a light pole. For some reason it's not nearly as popular with birds as the antenna, but occasionally a bird will claim it for a little while to scope out the neighborhood. Today it's a Mockingbird, but it occasionally attracts woodpeckers too.
