the genus is named after the Swedish baron Alströmer who brought them back from a trip to South America in 1753. Also called the Peruvian Lily or Inca Lily, is a South American genus of about 50 species of flowering plants. Almost all of the species are restricted to one of two distinct centers of diversity, one in central Chile, the other in eastern Brazil. Species of Alstroemeria from the Atacama Desert of Chile are winter-growing plants while those of Brazil are summer-growing.
The flower, which resembles a miniature lily, is very popular for bouquets and flower arrangements in the commercial cut flower trade. They have a vase life of about two weeks.

There was incredible aurora activity from sundown to midnight after a sun eruption Friday.
It was a perfect night for aurora shooting with no winds or clouds in the sky.
The biggest problems I usually have when shooting auroras is light pollution and in this case there are some houses in the background that give this picture an orange glow.
A cenote is a deep natural pit, or sinkhole, characteristic of Mexico, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. Especially associated with the Yucatán Peninsula and some nearby Caribbean islands, cenotes were sometimes used by the ancient Maya for sacrificial offerings. The term derives from a word used by the low-land Yucatec Maya, "Ts'onot" to refer to any location with accessible groundwater.
I mentioned in my previous post on the South Shore that while the passenger trains were cool in the street we had really hoped to catch the freight. Fortunately we were able to do exactly that. Originally it had looked like we might be able to catch the freight a day earlier but alas things on the railroad don’t always come together as one might hope. Luckily we didn’t go away empty handed as we did catch the passger trains in the street and we were able to photograph a South Shore job in the South Chicago area. Unfortunately they dropped all their cars at Burnham and returned to their Carroll Street Shops light power, but a good looking trio nonetheless.
