Ex-GMTX CN 4903 & CN 4115 lead a transfer into the Port of Montreal. The water level at the eastern end of the Lachine Canal is quite high.

Never expected to be flickr MIA so long! Attempting to refocus now! Excuses, excuses, so many I could give you! ;-) Will be gliding slowly through your streams this week. Looking forward to catching up with all the beauty and creativity that I have missed!

This is one image in a series I'm shooting on parking decks ... shapes and forms, light and shadow play, mood and atmosphere. Some images are minimalist; others representational; still others abstract. To see more in the series click Parking Deck Series
Macro Mondays - Dice.
I have used these blue translucent dice before - I was struck by the brilliance of the directly lit dots, and the play of light within the transilluminated cubes - and since the light was the subject, I thought I would work in B&W...
Strobe with grid from the right and level with the subject.

This is an example of the type of post-processing I sometimes do... I drop brightness and exposure way down which compacts the tonal resolution artificially, and then adjust light levels accordingly. This reduction of the number of tones in the image can produce nice drama in scenes with light/dark contrasts. At the extreme, you could have a monotone (pure black and pure white); the image above probably contains about 10 or 15 tones. (Note: In the original post I called this "Low Dynamic Range"; I believe "Low Tonal Resolution" is more accurate.) (Explore)
Banded Rail ( Rallus phillipensis )
A tube worm wraps itself around this Rails beak in a vain attempt to escape, These birds usually only feed during darkness or early morning /evening making photography difficult with such low light levels.
This morning it was a balancing act between the beautiful morning glow and increasing contrast. Waiting for the bird to move into an area of open shade with the resulting drop in shutter, increase in ISO to dreadful levels working wide open with a big lens is always vibration territory.....
view across the Columbia River from Lyle, Washington... the snow dipped almost to Lyle the 17th, but receded back up the hills...
it was a real challenge to capture the light on the hills AND the rich detail of autumn below! Too late now, I see how I could have improved it by shooting it darker and selectively adding light...
still, I love it!

There was still snow on the North side of Cissbury ring when I took this shot back in January. You can see the levels that encircle this ancient Hill fort built around 400 BC.
The tree that stands out on the top is at least for me a summer evening spot from which to shoot a sunset. The view from the North Western end out over beautiful farmland is most lovely as the sun sets and shows the contours of the landscape. It`s a bit of a climb up from the field at the bottom that is if you are lucky enough to find a space in the very small parking area, if there are no spaces then just go to plan B as there is no space for roadside parking, A shot of sunset from the top in the comment box below.

*[Funny Story: I found out many cruises ago, when you go to bed, wrap your camera gear in towels and put it in a closet or drawer (in an 'airconditioned' cabin), otherwise, when you leave and encounter that very humid sea air...YOUR LENSES FOG UP!! I forgot to do that on this morning and was devastated when I couldn't clear them no matter what I did!! (Didn't want to miss this!!) Finally, I was able to salvage a few shots...but you can see they're still a touch foggy.]
Berlin Hauptbahnhof ist der wichtigste Personenverkehrsbahnhof in Berlin und zugleich der größte Turmbahnhof Europas.
Der Bahnhof wurde am 28. Mai 2006 in Betrieb genommen
Berlin Hauptbahnhof "Berlin main station", sometimes translated as Berlin Central Station[, is the main railway station in Berlin, Germany.[8][9] It came into full operation two days after a ceremonial opening on 26 May 2006. It is located on the site of the historic Lehrter Bahnhof, and until it opened as a main line station, it was a stop on the Berlin S-Bahn suburban railway
After German reunification it was decided to improve Berlin's railway network by constructing a new north-south main line, to supplement the east-west Stadtbahn.
The design called for five levels. The highest level, on a bridge 10 metres above street level, was to have platforms for both long-distance and S-Bahn trains on the existing Stadbahn. The lowest level, 15 metres underground, was to have platforms served by new tunnels to Potsdamer Platz under the Spree and the Tiergarten, forming a new north-south line running to the northern part of the S-Bahn ring around central Berlin.
The main station hall is spanned by a similarly curved glass roof with a surface area of about 85 metres (279 ft) by 120 metres (390 ft), which was installed in February 2002.
The main concourse, supported by two towers, provides roughly 44,000 square metres (470,000 sq ft) of commercial space.

The Columbretes Islands (Valencian: Les Columbretes, are a group of small uninhabited islets of volcanic origin, in the Mediterranean Sea, 49 kilometres (30 miles) off Orpesa. Administratively they belong to Castelló de la Plana in the Valencian Country.
The main islets are Illa Grossa, La Ferrera, La Foradada and El Carallot. The total emerged area of all four is around 0.19 km2 (0.07 sq mi) and the highest point is 67 metres (220 feet) above sea level. Illa Grossa, by far the largest, is the northernmost island of the group. It stands in the place of an ancient crater and shows a distinctive semi-circular pattern. There are no buildings on it, except for a 19th-century lighthouse, a jetty and the staff quarters used by the biologists working in the wildlife reserve.
Two years ago, we bought a vegan donut from a coffee shop in Madison and we both agreed that it was the best donut we’ve ever had.
It was very exciting to learn that the makers of those donuts, Level 5 Donuts, just opened up a storefront at the beginning of May. It’s the 30th vegan establishment we’ve visited, which we hope to visit again.
The donuts we purchased were mixed berry cheesecake, chocolate brownie, churro, and a glazed old fashioned cake. They were all fantastic but I’d definitely go with the cake donut as my favorite (I’ll take cake over a yeast donut any day). So delicious!
So the freezing cold and stormy weather finally forced this photographer to relieve her frustration by combining a water-mister, a houseplant and her camera :)
