A westbound Southern Pacific train emerges from Tunnel 7, while entering Tunnel 6 on Main 1 near Donner Summit in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California.
Tunnel 6 on Main 1 features the highest point on the original SP main line, crossing Donner Summit at 7,000 feet above sea level. The 1,659 ft. long bore, blasted out of solid granite, required nearly a year to complete, finished by August 1867.
Main 1 was removed from service by SP in 1993, and the ties and rails were repurposed to double track the Sunset Route. Today, the abandoned tunnels and snow sheds of Main 1 serve as a trail for curious hikers and railroad historians.

This narrow country lane starts as a minor back street in the small town of Ambleside at the northern end of Lake Windermere. It then rises steeply through several tight bends until it reaches the Kirkstone Pass. This is the highest pass in the Lake District that is open to vehicular traffic, at almost 1,500 feet above sea level.

or just the end of it. I wasn't sure how old this is, but now I've photographed it I looked to see if there was a name, it is T. Cooke London and must date from the 1890s, so I guess it is vintage. There is also a serial number 007. Maybe I'd better dust and polish it.

The Great Lakes water levels are at an all time high this year. This is the East Point lighthouse near the village of Killarney on Georgian Bay taken last month. The winds were whipping up gusts of about 80 km at times. When the water levels are high, the crashing waves can cause real damage on shore. There is another lighthouse on Georgian Bay in Lions Head. Last week the wind took off the one side of the lighthouse and left the inside exposed to the elements. Huge boulders around the lighthouse were displaced. Sadly, there is not much money spent on maintaining the lighthouses anymore.

I was taken by the two different levels separated by the hand rail, and the geometric shapes, plus
the fairly minimalistic nature of the scene, given that it’s probably very busy at other times.
The two guys walking at right angles to one another also caught my eye.

I explored this old barn several times before its eventual collapse. But I always felt a bit uneasy approaching it at close range. It loomed over me and the wood seemed unnaturally dark. It had a foreboding quality that I found tremendously exhilarating. It was the kind of place you didn't want to turn your back on for fear that something would come racing out of the blackness and try to pull you inside. A totally irrational fear, but a fear nonetheless. I've found this with other abandonments over the years...being attracted to something that I'm not completely comfortable with. These are the kind of places that I most want to photograph.
