This is one of the most stunning views along US 441 in the Smokies. This view is the Oconaluftee Valley, and can be found just above Newfound Gap, just over the border in NorthCarolina.

This old ship is named after Johan Ludvig Runeberg, Finland's national poet.
He was born February 5, 1804 in Jakobstad, died May 6, 1877 in Borgå.
Runeberg was a Finnish-speaking writer and poet. From his most widely disseminated work, Fänrik Stål's Sayings , published in two parts in 1848 and 1860, comes the text of the Finnish National Anthem, "Our Country."

About the ship:
The m/s J.L. Runeberg was built in Helsinki in 1912. Originally she sailed under the name s/s Helsingfors Skärgård (”Helsinki Archipelago”). In the beginning this steamer sailed west from Helsinki, to Porkkala. In the 1930’s the name was changed to s/s J.L. Runeberg and the ship cruised to Porvoo for the first time.
Over the years the ship has had several owners and been on duty as a transporting ship for the military, as a zoo-ferry and as an excursion boat. It has experienced several groundings, been under break up threat and stood ashore for several years. In the 1960’s it was restored and got a diesel engine. Once again she run between Helsinki and Porvoo.
When m/s J.L. Runeberg came into Shipowners Co J.L. Runeberg’s hands in 1986, it was tired and worn. Together with friends the enthusiastic owners restored the ship. The careful maintenance and restoring job goes on every winter, using traditional methods and crafts. The future looks bright for this 106 years old ship!

The spire of Uspenski Cathedral can be seen in the background. It is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Helsinki, Finland, dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary).
Its name comes from the Old Church Slavonic word uspenie, which denotes the Dormition. Designed by the Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev (1808–1862). The cathedral was built after his death in 1862–1868.
The crypt chapel of the cathedral is named after the holy Alexander Hotovitzky, who served as vicar of the Orthodox parish of Helsinki 1914–1917.
The Cathedral is set upon a hillside on the Katajanokka peninsula overlooking the city. On the back of the cathedral, there is a plaque commemorating Russian Emperor Alexander II, who was the sovereign of the Grand Duchy of Finland during the cathedral's construction. Main cathedral of the Finnish Orthodox Church in the diocese of Helsinki, Uspenski Cathedral is claimed to be the largest orthodox church in Western Europe.

During the English Civil War, Malmesbury is said to have changed hands as many as seven times, and the abbey was fiercely fought over. Hundreds of pock-marks left by bullets and shot can still be seen on the south, west and east sides of Malmesbury Abbey walls. Today much of the Abbey survives, with the ruined parts still joined onto the complete structure. The existing third of the nave remains in use as an active place of worship

The geologic history of a planet is written in its layers. Erosion of the surface reveals several shades of light toned layers, likely sedimentary deposits.
The most recent geologic features are the narrow sand dunes snaking across the top of all the rock.
