Bar in Jersey City, NJ. The surface is thin, clear plastic overtop of a oil/water mixture backlit with red light. If you push on it, the bubbles move around. It's quite cool.
Dug out my old lava lamp, I haven't had it on in years but I could still sit and watch it for hours.

I was going for the mushroom cloud motif, with the high contrast green out of focus and off to the side to balance the in focus and in-your-face red. I noticed there weren't many lava lamp photos on flickr so I decided to share two of mine.
Self Portrait @ 2007 06 09 with Self Timer;
no i don't precious that lavalamp at all, i just thought the word fits the feeling of this image~=]
The contemplation of my navel. I used the audio from this experiment as the groove to the music I composed for this turbulent look at the world.
MQG Madrona Road Challenge--hanging picture, wall clock, lava lamp. Wood grain quilting in the paneling, swirly twirlies in the lava lamp. Pic hanging from a wire and nail. Polaroid snapshot of the 70s :-)
This lamp recently seen for sale is a slightly different version of the commonly seen Stardust Lites. This version features a different cap with a wooden effect and a slightly different base too. I just love the ornate base which gives this lamp its unique character. This vintage USA glitter lamp is really interesting ... Please see the photos for more details.

Shot on a Cullimann Magnesit 522 Tripod. My new old lava lamp. I found them in the storage room i think it's 10 years old.
A still-life with an emphasis on music and music technology from the groovy 1970s, man. Keep on Truckin'! Hang in there, Baby! Makin' Bacon!
Actually this is also one of my treasure. This is an original 1960s lava lamp - or glub lamp as my nan calls it. Not sure why she calls it that as I can find no reference on Google. Anyway, I have coveted this lamp for years. Long before the recent tacky resurrection of these gorgeous beasts. My nana being the doll that she is gave this to me about 10 years ago. I don't usually turn it on as the originals are quite dangerous if the oil gets too hot. However, tonight I turned it on. This photo doesn't do it justice but you get the idea. the wax is taking AGES to melt, i think the heater is knackered.
Me and my cousins used to nag for this to be turned on. How retro and cool is my nan? I can't wait to have a house large enough for this to have it's own corner [not that i live in a shoebox].
Nana, you rock. x
