GIC Talk December 2, 4 p.m.

Language and Self-Identity: How I Found/Lost Myself Through Korean Study

Speaker: Miranda New

MA, Chonnam National University, Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language

Miranda New, originally from Texas, USA, has lived in Gwangju for several years. Starting as an English teacher, she worked her way up to be the first native English speaker to complete a Master’s degree in Chonnam National University’s Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language Program. Her graduate thesis focuses on a case study of native English speakers’ challenges while learning Korean. In this talk, she will be discussing language learning, specifically Korean language study and its relationship to self- identity, using as an example her own journey of learning Korean and how this was affected by and changed her self-identity as a native English speaker. She will then discuss points from her thesis, some of the interesting sociolinguistic phenomena that confront native English Teachers who attempt to learn Korean during their time here.

Mesopotamia—the land between rivers—lay cradled by the Tigris and Euphrates, in what is today Iraq, and parts of Syria, Iran and Turkey. It is here, over 5000 years ago, that humanity began to write, to measure, to shape the world with thought made material.

Often called the cradle of civilisation, Mesopotamia gave rise to the first known cities, legal codes, poetry, and trade networks. But perhaps most quietly revolutionary: it was here that time was made. The division of hours into 60 minutes, of days into structured ritual and celestial rhythm, stems from the Sumerians’ sexagesimal system. They watched the stars and counted the breath between shadow and light.

It was not a single civilisation, but many: Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, Assyrians—each layering knowledge upon the next. And though temples and empires rose and fell, it was the everyday—the shaping of clay, the weaving of linen, the counting of grain—that endured. Culture, here, was not a luxury. It was a way of surviving beautifully.

In Mesopotamia, humans became makers of meaning.

Not through conquest. But through pattern. Through form. Through time.

“Kiln Songs”

They did not know

they were building the spine

of centuries.

A kiln in a courtyard—

a cracked bowl resting

like a sleeping moon.

Laughter braided through fingers

as slip met skin.

Clothes not tailored, but grown—

colours whispered

from plants, ash, and river bones.

They spun stories not in language,

but in glaze,

in fringe,

in the swing of a hip

on market mornings.

Their world had no history yet—

just movement.

Just clay that remembered the hand

that touched it.

River bends her mouth—

hands shape bowls from silt and song.

Dust listens, still warm.

Fringes catch the breeze—

girls in linen, laughing light.

Time forgets their names.

Before stone knew form,

before breath turned into text,

she danced, shaping flame.

I have been wondering how the visual and the language have a bonded connection. It's helpful in expressing but somewhere it limits us and does not offer a chance to look at things from a fresh perspective.

By the end of the 1400s, Venice had emerged as the major printing center in Europe, where books were printed in various languages to be shipped around the world. The city also became the great emporium for prints, and the woodcut developed beyond its humble origins as a popular art for devotional imagery, playing cards, and later for book illustration. <em>View of Venice</em> epitomizes this new ambitious scope for the woodcut, and is a landmark in the history of printmaking. This monumental print can be compared in scale only to a mural decoration and presumably served as a less expensive surrogate for paintings. The six sheets that make up the design would have been pasted either onto a canvas or the wall itself, resulting in the survival of only 12 impressions of the original edition like this one, and only three in America. The goal of the print was to depict Venice as seen from above. No single vantage point would have been sufficient, so Jacopo de' Barbari and a team of surveyors climbed various towers and tall buildings to record small sections of the city. These individual views were combined to form the map which follows a single, though inconsistent, system of perspective. Unprecedented for its exactness of detail and difficulty of execution, <em>View of Venice</em> represents the first attempt to render the image of a city according to the laws of geometry. The view also highlights the seafaring trade activities of Venice, depicting Mercury, god of commerce, presiding over the city, while Neptune, god of the seas, keeps watch over the entrance to the city's Grand Canal.

Italy, early 16th Century

Did you know...

Before the conveniences of airplanes, photography, or even a hot air balloon this monumental bird's-eye view map of Venice made in 1500 documents every building, canal, alleyway, and square in the city.

UNICODE 5.1.0 meets Or-Omcode∞.1.0

Unicode represents the Tower ob Babel en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_Babel In computing, Unicode is an industry standard allowing computers to consistently represent and manipulate text expressed in most of the world's writing systems. Developed in tandem with the Universal Character Set standard and published in book form as The Unicode Standard, Unicode consists of a repertoire of more than 100,000 characters, a set of code charts for visual reference, an encoding methodology and set of standard character encodings, an enumeration of character properties such as upper and lower case, a set of reference data computer files, and a number of related items, such as character properties, rules for normalization, decomposition, collation, rendering and bidirectional display order (for the correct display of text containing both right-to-left scripts, such as Arabic or Hebrew, and left-to-right scripts). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UniCode

Or-Omcode∞.1.0 represents a new Universal Language de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universalsprache derived within the Doctine Of Essense by

The habs have done something awful that they haven't done since 1948, they got shutout 3 games in a row this week. The Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, and Washington Capitals all had their way with the habs, who have been out scored 11-0 over those 3 games. They have back to back games this Tuesday and Wednesday as well, their record for back to back games is not great either, it's a rough time to be a habs fan.

Luckily I have had some great distractions from the habbies this weekend. A few friends and I were down at The Ship tonight while Joanna Barker and Dead Language were followed by the Hunter Gatherers. It was another great night for music and a great night to distract me from the habs' woes.
