• At the right, with the green trim, is "Padma Grocery," a/k/a "পদ্ম গ্রৈাসারী," shown here during the interim between the replacement of its all-English sign with an English and Bengali version.

Traveling allowed me to learn a new language. In this picture we see the Greek Guards of the Parliament in Athens. But what I want you to look at is the Greek writing in the background.
When I decided to travel to Europe I knew I was going to Greece. There, not many people speak English in the smaller cities (like in Iraklio), so I decided to learn to speak Greek, although I lost a lot of it now that I no longer practice.
When we travel and need to use another language to be understood and get around, we have no choice but to learn it. I find that putting oneself in such a situation is a great way of learning a new language and the people I met in Greece were more than happy to help me learn.

Once, thriving Native American trade communities of Tiwa and Tompiro language-speaking Puebloans inhabited this remote frontier area of central New Mexico. Early in the 17th century Spanish Franciscans found the area ripe for their missionary efforts. However, by the late 1670s the entire Salinas District, as the Spanish had named it, was depopulated of both Indian and Spaniard. What remains today are austere yet beautiful reminders of this earliest contact between Pueblo Indians and Spanish Colonials: the ruins of three mission churches, at Quarai, Abó, and Gran Quivira and the partially excavated pueblo of Las Humanas or, as it is known today, the Gran Quivira pueblo.
It was first proclaimed Gran Quivira National Monument on November 1, 1909. As with all historic areas administered by the National Park Service, the National Monument was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966. On December 19, 1980 it was enlarged and two New Mexico State Monuments were absorbed into it on November 2, 1981. It was renamed on October 28, 1988.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Service member volunteers from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center team up with local community members and an estimated 3 million volunteers nationwide to "make a difference" Oct. 22 during Make A Difference Day 2011. This year more than 80 military volunteers from the Presidio left their language studies behind to join projects at Beta Park and a private residence, both in Seaside, as well as Marshall Elementary School located in the Ord Military Community. Held annually on the fourth Saturday of October, Make A Difference Day is sponsored by USA WEEKEND Magazine in partnership with the HandsOn Network and, according to their website, is referred to as the most encompassing national day of helping others.

I finally figured out why nobody cares I correctly predicted the single #costliest natural disaster ever in detail publishing in eleven languages repeatedly before it cost the quarter trillion dollars at the "June 15, 1896" epicenter on March 11, 2011 that I was tortured in "four point" restraints for! Because the most expensive day of all time I predicted costliest natural disaster ever made the '04 Boxing Day "Christmas Day at Ground Zero" 9.11 magnitude deadliest natural disaster ever w/ the very religiously strategic epicenter off the coast of "most Muslim" not described w/ watch time for 230,000 non-Christian fatalities as the American Airlines Flight 11 September 11, 2001 departure look much more natural historically on cold plates at a time of our choosing. Competence.
The evil empire having had at times as many as 40,000 or more atomic bombs for seven consecutive decades of not ever using the world's most powerful explosive in hostility through total collapse of empire and cold war and revolutionary war and civil war through the Russian military support of Syria, the Russian military intervention in Ukraine, the Insurgency in the North Caucasus, The Russo-Georgian War, the Second Chechen War, The War of Dagestan, First Chechen War, Tajikistani Civil War, East Prigorodny Conflict, Transnistria War, War in Abkhazia, Georgian Civil War, Soviet–Afghan War, Ethio-Somali War, Angolan Civil War, Eritrean War of Independence, War of Attrition, Zhenbao Island Incident, Invasion of Czechoslovakia, Hungarian Revolution, Korean War, First Indochina War, Guerrilla war in the Baltic states, means Russia is the nuclear world leader in peace or atomic bombs don't exist. i love the twisted arms. i've been trying to simplify everything in photoshop. going back to basics with editing and sharpening. i was becoming a little too heavy handed with color and contrast.
Lamanai Ruins, Belize.
Lamanai means "submerged crocodile" in the Maya language and it's also the name of the third largest, and possibly most interesting, archeological site in Belize.
Located in the Orange Walk District, the Lamanai temple complex sits atop the western bluff of the New River Lagoon and is surrounded by pristine rainforest.
Lamanai was occupied continuously for over 3,000 years and it's remoteness contributed to it's continuous occupation, well beyond most other Maya sites, until at least 1,650 AD.
Set in tropical forest and providing spectacular views from several of its large temples, Lamanai provides a unique experience into the culture of the Maya and the biological diversity of the tropical forest.
Lamanai features the second largest Pre-Classic structure in the Maya world and unlike other ruins, much of Lamanai was built in layers where successive populations built upon the temples of their ancestors, instead of destroying them.
Although hundreds of ruins are said to remain unexcavated in the nearby jungle, three of the most impressive temples have been renovated: the Jaguar Temple, named for its boxy jaguar decoration; the High Temple, offering visitors a panoramic view from its summit; and the Mask Temple, adorned by a 13-foot stone mask of an ancient Maya king.

The Royal Palace or Dar al-Makhzen (Arabic: دار المخزن, lit. 'House of the Makhzen', Berber languages: ⵜⴰⴷⴰⵔⵜ ⵏ ⵎⴿⵣⵏ) is the primary and official residence of the king of Morocco in Rabat. It is situated in the commune of Touarga [fr]. Its official name is El Mechouar Essaid, lit. 'Venue of Happiness'.
History
The 'Alawi sultans and kings have maintained a palace in Rabat since the 18th-century reign of sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah, who used Rabat as one of his imperial residences and renovated royal palaces in other cities. The current building was built in 1864 by Mohammed IV to replace the older palace.
When most of Morocco came under French control in 1912, the colonial administration wanted the sultan to be largely stationed in one place, near their administrative headquarters, to show his acceptance of the new regime. [citation needed] Although kings had many residences at their disposal when independence was declared in 1955, they chose to keep the Dar al-Makhzen palace as the main palace of the monarch.
Some monarchs, particularly Mohammed V, preferred the smaller and relatively secluded palace of Dar-es-Salaam, further out of the center of the city, maintaining the Dar al-Makhzen as their official and administrative residence.
Several important events in the lives of several Moroccan royals have taken place in the palace, including the birth of Hassan II in 1929 and the marriage ceremony of Mohammed VI and Salma Bennani in 2002.

The palace sits at the end of the mechouar, a large parade ground also containing a small mosque. The mechouar is used for large public assemblies, such as the return from exile of Mohammed V in 1955.
As well as living space for the king and the royal family, there is accommodation for the Moroccan Royal Guard. The palace complex also contains the Collège Royal, a school for senior members of the royal family, a cookery school, and a ground floor library built to contain the manuscript collection of Hassan II.
There are extensive gardens and grounds surrounding the palace, the design of which was influenced by French formality, traditional Arabic motifs and local horticulture.
