Badlands National Park (Lakota: Makȟóšiča) is an American national park located in southwestern South Dakota. The park protects 242,756 acres (379.3 sq mi; 982.4 km2) of sharply eroded buttes and pinnacles, along with the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States. The National Park Service manages the park, with the South Unit being co-managed with the Oglala Lakota tribe.
The Badlands Wilderness protects 64,144 acres (100.2 sq mi; 259.6 km2) of the park's North Unit as a designated wilderness area, and is one site where the black-footed ferret, one of the most endangered mammals in the world, was reintroduced to the wild. The South Unit, or Stronghold District, includes sites of 1890s Ghost Dances, a former United States Air Force bomb and gunnery range, and Red Shirt Table, the park's highest point at 3,340 feet (1,020 m).
Authorized as Badlands National Monument on March 4, 1929, it was not established until January 25, 1939. Badlands was redesignated a national park on November 10, 1978. Under the Mission 66 plan, the Ben Reifel Visitor Center was constructed for the monument in 1957–58. The park also administers the nearby Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. The movies Dances with Wolves (1990) and Thunderheart (1992) were partially filmed in Badlands National Park.
This national park was originally a reservation of the Oglala Sioux Indians and spans the southern unit of the park. The area around Stronghold Table was originally Sioux territory, and is revered as a ceremonial sacred site rather than a place to live.
In 1868, at the Second Treaty of Fort Laramie, the United States assured the Sioux that the Badlands shall forever be the property of the Sioux. In 1889, however, the treaty was broken and the Badlands were confiscated by the United States and unilaterally incorporated into a national park.
At the end of the 19th century, the Sioux Indians used this area as the site of the Ghost Dance, a ceremony to revive the souls of buffalo and the dead. After the last ghost dance in 1890, the United States banned the ritual, but it was revived by the Red Power movement, a movement to restore Indian rights that began in the 1960s. In 1980, the U.S. Supreme Court awarded compensation to the Sioux for the abrogation of the 1868 treaty, but the Sioux did not accept the money.

The College of DuPage Language Department and French Club (La Connexion Française), in collaboration with community members from the Alliance Française of DuPage, recently presented "Célébration de la Francophonie" at the College’s Glen Ellyn campus. The multicultural event featured displays on the customs of Francophone countries and treats from French-speaking countries, including Belgium, Congo, Switzerland, France, Haiti and Cameroon. In addition, participants had their “passports” stamped in each location and enjoyed student presentations and international folk dance.

The English Language Fellow Program sends experienced U.S. TESOL professionals on paid teaching assignments at universities and other academic institutions around the world. As a U.S. Department of State public diplomacy initiative, Fellows are cultural ambassadors that promote English language learning and mutual understanding through cultural exchange.
From August 6-8, 2019, over 200 Fellows going to over 75 countries to teach English and train teachers met in Washington, DC for the Pre-Departure Orientation. Representing the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, Assistant Secretary Marie Royce and State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus spoke at the event.

The Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most familiar cars in the world - a global icon and symbol of Germany's post-war 'economic miracle'. It represented high quality, reliability and affordability, and its design captured people's imagination. With more than 2.1 million cars produced, the Beetle became the longest running and most-manufactured car of a single design worldwide before it was discontinued in 2003.
The Beetle began life under the Third Reich. The idea of a car for the masses appealed to Adolf Hitler, as a symbol of the new Germany he wished to create. The word Volkswagen (people's car) entered the German language and Ferdinand Porsche and his team were contracted to produce a design. Mass production did not begin until after the Second World War, and from the early 1950s the Beetle came to represent a new Germany.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Presidio of Monterey and the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center conducted a Military Community Resiliency Day to promote wellness, safety, team-building, unit morale, and esprit de corps for military members, families, staff and faculty here on April 3. Attendees were able to participate in a variety of activities, physical fitness competitions, wellness awareness, and information booths, while enjoying food and ware vendors, and much more.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- For the fifth consecutive year, service members from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center and Coast Guard Station Monterey represented the military during the final three day of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Feb. 13-15 by tending a special pin adorned with the United States Flag at Pebble Beach Golf Links hole-15. The 15th hole was also the location of the Support Our Troops tent, sponsored by Group O, which provided free food, drink and other amenities to service members who had special tickets donated by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation.

Peavey Plaza is a public outdoor event space in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota at the south end of Nicollet Mall. The sunken plaza and its amphitheater was designed by landscape architect M. Paul Friedberg and built in 1975 alongside Orchestra Hall. The Cultural Landscape Foundation has deemed the plaza a "marvel of modernism" and it has been named one of the top ten most endangered historical sites in Minnesota. The plaza is threatened by development, and a planned "revitalization" by the City of Minneapolis and Orchestra Hall has been criticized for excluding key designers from the process. In June of 2012, the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota and the Cultural Landscape Foundation filed a lawsuit against the City of Minneapolis on the grounds that the planned demolition of Peavey Plaza would violate a Minnesota law protecting "historic resources" from "pollution, impairment or destruction." In January of 2013, the plaza was placed on the National Register of Historic Places; the lawsuit remained outstanding at that time. On October 4th, 2013, the lawsuit was resolved in favor of the Plaza's preservation. The settlement agreement included the following language: "The parties agree that the goal of any new plan plan will be to preserve the Plaza through a rehabilitation that is consistent with the Secretary of Interior’s STANDARDS FOR TREATMENT OF HISTORIC PROPERTIES, and specifically with the GUIDELINES FOR THE TREATMENT OF CULTURAL LANDSCAPES published by the U.S. National Park Service." The National Trust for Historic Preservation cited the site as one of ten historic sites saved in 2013. Source; Wikipedia
