PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Presidio of Monterey and the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center conducted a Military Community Resiliency Day to promote wellness, safety, team-building, unit morale, and esprit de corps for military members, families, staff and faculty here on April 3. Attendees were able to participate in a variety of activities, physical fitness competitions, wellness awareness, and information booths, while enjoying food and ware vendors, and much more.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- For the fifth consecutive year, service members from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center and Coast Guard Station Monterey represented the military during the final three day of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Feb. 13-15 by tending a special pin adorned with the United States Flag at Pebble Beach Golf Links hole-15. The 15th hole was also the location of the Support Our Troops tent, sponsored by Group O, which provided free food, drink and other amenities to service members who had special tickets donated by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation.

Lzone Cafe is a place in Busan where foreigners and koreans come together for studying. We offer many different language lessons, for example english, french, spanish etc. If you live in Busan or visit Busan for awhile you are always welcome to pay us a visit and check Lzone Cafe out by yourself. Our teachers are capable and friendly. And of course we are friendly too. As you can see beside studying you can play games like foosball or pool. If you are thirsty or hungry, you can have a coffee or order some food at our counter ^^
If you want to come to Busan but do not know where to stay then there is no problem. We also own 3 Hostels in Busan: Pusan Hostel, Kyungsung Hostel and L-zone Hostel. Our Hostels (Guesthouses) in Busan are cheap, clean and our staff is really nice.
Strolling along the street after supper, we saw this delightful "Chinglish" sigh that made absolutely no sense.... Is it a Language school or a coffee shop?

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Service members from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center once again led the parade at the 55th Annual Good Old Days, held in Pacific Grove April 14-15. Monterey County’s largest arts and crafts show, Good Old Days featured over 200 art and food vendors in downtown Pacific Grove, live entertainment, which included a performance by the DLIFLC Air Force Choir, old-fashioned games and contests, in addition to the parade.

The English Language Fellow Program sends experienced U.S. TESOL professionals on paid teaching assignments at universities and other academic institutions around the world. As a U.S. Department of State public diplomacy initiative, Fellows are cultural ambassadors that promote English language learning and mutual understanding through cultural exchange.
From August 6-8, 2019, over 200 Fellows going to over 75 countries to teach English and train teachers met in Washington, DC for the Pre-Departure Orientation. Representing the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, Assistant Secretary Marie Royce and State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus spoke at the event.
Ten members of the Spanish Language Debate Society traveled to Bogotá, Colombia, for the world championships of debate in Spanish, CMUDE 2015.
I decided that in 2011 I would stop only picking up bits and pieces of Russian from the internet, conversations, television, etc. and sit down with a Russian grammar book as often as possible and learn. Hopefully this will make speaking it much easier as time goes by!

02/05/08 - Another try at shooting and editing a RAW image. Too much yellow and too much grain, me thinks. I didn't realize it had so much grain until I uploaded it. I know why: iso 1600 is too high for such bright natural light.
Oh well. I'm chalking this one up to a lesson learned.
Incidentally, I like how the Light wraps around me.

Urmia (Turkish language: Urmu, Urmiyə, اورمیه; farsi: ارومیه‎) variously translitterated as Oroumiyeh, Orūmīyeh and Urūmiyeh, is a city in and the capital of West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 577,307, with 153,570 households.
The city lies at an altitude of 1,330 m above sea level on the Shahar Chay river (City River). Urmia is the 10th most populated city in Iran. The population is mainly mainly Azerbaijanian Turkish(85-90%), with Kurdish, Assyrian Christian, and Armenian minorities.
Urmia is situated on a fertile plain called Urmia Plain, on western side of Lake Urmia; and eastern side of Turkish border and marginal range of mountains.
Urmia is the trade center for a fertile agricultural region where fruit (especially Apple and Grape) and Tobacco are grown. An important town by the 9th cent., Urmia was seized by the Seljuk Turks (1184), and later occupied a number of times by the Ottoman Turks.
Urmiye (Türkçesi:اورمو, Urmu, اورمیه, Urumiyə;Farsça: ارومیه, Orumieh), İran'ın Batı Azerbaycan Eyaleti'nin yönetim merkezi olan şehir. PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Army team at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center won the Commandant's Cup relay race at the Presidio's Price Fitness Center Field, June 15. The race was the precursor for the DLIFLC students' summer Resiliency Day, a day without classes, offering physical and recreational activities to strengthen the body, mind and spirit.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center Joint Service Color Guard, along with marching units from the four service branches, once again kicked off Pacific Grove's Good Old Days festival by leading the parade along Pine St. on April 11.
The Annual Good Old Days Celebration and Music Festival started in 1957 and is a two-day event in downtown Pacific Grove with live music, parade, vendors and carnival rides.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center students and staff marked Patriot Day with a Fall Resiliency Day event held at the Price Fitness Center field Sept. 11. Presidio of Monterey Garrison Commander, Col. Paul Fellinger and DLIFLC Commandant, Col. Phillip Deppert kicked off the event by signing a joint proclamation declaring September suicide prevention month. Resiliency Day combined athletic competitions with a variety of additional recreational activities, food vendors and informational booths to improve the well-being of the body, mind and soul.

A friend of mine tells me this practice of native language stop signs is common on other first nations reserves, I must investigate this further and maybe put together a set in the future. I spoke with a young guy in a local shop and he had a hard time pronouncing the words but he knew them which was cool.
The Temple of Edfu is an ancient Egyptian temple located on the west bank of the Nile in the city of Edfu which was known in Greco-Roman times as Apollonopolis Magna, after the chief god Horus-Apollo. It is the second largest temple in Egypt after Karnak and one of the best preserved. The temple, dedicated to the falcon god Horus, was built in the Ptolemaic period between 237 and 57 BCE. The inscriptions on its walls provide important information on language, myth and religion during the Greco-Roman period in ancient Egypt. In particular, the Temple's inscribed building texts "provide details [both] of its construction, and also preserve information about the mythical interpretation of this and all other temples as the Island of Creation."There are also "important scenes and inscriptions of the Sacred Drama which related the age-old conflict between Horus and Seth.
The Bible wasn't written in English (it was originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek), but it has influenced the language. Many Biblical allusions have become a part of the English language. This week we'll see five of them.
Today's word is corbie messenger, which alludes to the crow Noah sent out from his ark. From corbin (raven), from Old French corbin, from Latin corvus (raven, crow).
NOTES: In the Bible, after months of floating around, Noah has his ark parked on Mt. Ararat. He picks a raven from his menagerie to go scout the scene. The bird never returns. Then Noah picks a dove and the dove does dutifully return.
The moral of the story? All you need is Dove.
But let's not be too hard on the raven. Every body is beautiful. Everyday moisture is the key to beautiful skin, yes, but "forty days and forty nights" of moisture is a little too much.
