Tom Otterness’s “Tree of Knowledge’’ sculpture slyly deploys cute figures to make cutting social commentary. The cheeky “Tree of Knowledge,’’ is a 9-foot-tall bronze tree populated with critters, which needles the justice system. A blind bird holds the scales of justice as a menacing snake slithers toward it up the tree trunk. A beaver and a possum, both in business suits, represent lawyers. Nietzsche was typically absolute on the subject - 'Only those thoughts which come from 'walking' have a value' - and Wallace Stevens typically tentative: 'Perhaps / The truth depends on a walk around the lake.' In all of these accounts, walking is not the action by which one arrives at knowledge; it is itself the means of knowing.

This is the tree of knowledge at the Ballarat University. It is a splendid sight to behold, this enormous tree in the midst of concrete buildings. I heard from someone there that when in need of extra energy, the tree is the perfect place to rejuvinate yourself. Nature is always a good place to be to be refreshed.
