Dr. Henry Pym, an American biochemist with extensive knowledge in other scientific fields, married Maria Trovaya, a brave and beautiful young woman who had been a political dissident in her native Hungary, from which she had fled. Naively believing that his American citizenship would protect her, Henry and Maria Pym traveled to Hungary shortly after their marriage. The Pyms were confronted by agents of the secret police there. Henry Pym was knocked unconscious and Maria was murdered. Pym was greatly distraught by his wife's death, and decided to do whatever he could in the future to battle injustice and inhumanity.
Back in the United States, Pym discovered a rare group of subatomic particles, which have become known as the "Pym Particles." Pym was able, through the application of magnetic fields, to entrap the particles within two separate serums. One serum would reduce the size of persons and objects, and the other would restore them to their normal size. Pym tested the reducing serum on himself and discovered it was more powerful than he had expected: it reduced him to the size of an insect. Pym became entrapped in an anthill and was pursued by the ants within. He escaped and restored himself to his normal size with his other serum. Deciding that the serums were too dangerous to exist, Pym destroyed both of them.

However, weeks later he reconsidered his decision and began to recreate the serums, whose existence he then kept secret. Inspired by his experience in the anthill, Pym undertook a study of ants, and theorized that ants communicate through psionic / electrical waves transmitted through their antennae. After months of work, Pym succeeded in creating his first "cybernetic helmet," which would enable him to communicate with ants through transmitting and receiving psionic / electrical waves. Thinking that someday he might want to use the shrinking potion on himself again, Pym also designed a protective costume for himself, Unstable Molecules and steel mesh.
Palenque is a medium-sized site, much smaller than such huge sites as Tikal or Copán, but it contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and bas-relief carvings that the Mayas produced. Much of the history of Palenque has been reconstructed from reading the hieroglyphic inscriptions on the many monuments; historians now have a long sequence of the ruling dynasty of Palenque in the 5th century and extensive knowledge of the city-state's rivalry with other states such as Calakmul and Toniná. The most famous ruler of Palenque was Pacal the Great whose tomb has been found and excavated in the Temple of the Inscriptions.
The Palace, a complex of several connected and adjacent buildings and courtyards, was built by several generations on a wide artificial terrace during four century period. The Palace was used by the Mayan aristocracy for bureaucratic functions, entertainment, and ritualistic ceremonies. The Palace is located in the center of the ancient city.
Within the Palace there are numerous sculptures and bas-relief carvings that have been conserved. The Palace most unique and recognizable feature is the four-story tower known as The Observation Tower. The Observation Tower like many other buildings at the site exhibit a mansard-like roof. The A-shaped Corbel arch is an architectural motif observed throughout the complex. The Corbel arches require a large amount of masonry mass and are limited to a small dimensional ratio of width to height providing the characteristic high ceilings and narrow passageways. The Palace was equipped with numerous large baths and saunas which were supplied with fresh water by an intricate water system. An aqueduct, constructed of great stone blocks with a three-meter-high vault, deviates the Otulum River to flow underneath the main plaza. The Palace is the largest building complex in Palenque measuring 97 meters by 73 meters at its base.

Taken for the "Active Assignment Weekly" event called "Classic Still Life."
I am interested in how the old masters often used their paintings to tell a story or reinforce some kind of moral tale with their paintings (when it took months to create an image, it seems like people put more thought into their meaning). This is a riff on that old "tree of knowledge" allegory with the apple representing the biblical story, and the books representing the literal path to knowledge.
Lighting and technical info: I had one light on my upper left behind the camera, bounced off an umbrella -- that one-light look was used a lot in classic painting because it gives a soft look (and it is pretty easy to get access to a window as a source of light). In Photoshop, I darkened the blacks in the background, since they had some patterns that I thought were distracting.
The Knowledge Totem is found on the grounds of the British Columbia Parliament Buildings in Victoria, B.C. The totem was carved by Coast Salish artist Cicero August and was created for the 1994 Commonwealth Games. The totem was refurbished in 2021 by Doug August, son of the original artist.

Knowledge Has A Mind Of It's Own
Inspired by my own drawing from 1984, when I was 7 years old, for my Grandma (it could be 1982, but I can't read my own writing :) I've wanted to do this photo for so long, and am so thrilled I've finally done it.

Frank Kennicott came to Colorado with his brother George to claim 160 acres under the Homestead Act (1862). He combined the knowledge he had acquired at a business college in Chicago with hard work to build a prosperous hay and cattle business in the Wet Mountain Valley. He returned to Half Day, Illinois, to marry and brought his new wife, Mary Elizabeth, back to Colorado. She died in childbirth two years later. The baby, Mary Thorp Kennicott, was said to have been the first non-Native American child born in the Wet Mountain Valley. She was raised in Ontario, Canada by her maternal grandmother, but frequently visited the Kennicott Ranch as she grew older.
My daughter has her degree now and took her own photo next the the old buildings of our University of Otago. I am hoping future emplyers will be impressed by the way her mind is branching out and the way she sees things from a different angle.

Or "used" knowledge, since this is a used bookstore in Seaside Oregon. How do they sell books if the store is in this state? Well, I'm not sure, but it has looked like this for the five years I have driven by it.

Our word for today was 'grow'. I knew exactly what I wanted to do when I read this at 5 a.m. this morning...and then I had an entire day to think it over while at work.
2 Peter 3:18 "But grow in grace, and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To HIM be glory both now and for ever. Amen."
That necklace there was a gift from my husband while we were dating. He explained that it appealed to him because of the two hearts placed in the center of the cross. He said that to him, this represented us, our love and our relationship, built together on the solid rock of Christ's never-ending love and forgiveness.
We've grown a lot together since then. We've studied together, prayed together and are constantly striving to build our relationship stronger and closer to God. I hope that as we get older, we continue to grow in grace, in knowledge and always remember to put God first in our lives and marriage.
P.S - With this new promotion, I am now working from 5:30 to 3:30...making my day so long that by the time I get home and take my pictures and then post them, I'm tired enough to just die. I'm trying so, so hard to get caught up on all of yours. Please be patient with me and know that I just can't wait to see them all!

The concept of innate knowledge is not novel to the Nene. It seems to be much more common amongst avian species but it isn't simply something associated with our feathered friends. At Slimbridge, some nene goslings are incubated, hatched, brooded and reared by their parent geese. Like the one in this photo, is spends its waking hours scouring the surroundings, grazing and browsing on local flora. It seems to know exactly which plants to choose and which to avoid. The obvious thought would be that mom and dad have taught it just what to pick and what to leave behind.
On the other hand Slimbrige staff also incubate, hatch, brood and raise a number of nene goslings separately. It's necessary in order to maintain populations on the refuge, as many naturally reared goslings are lost to local predators. Aside from the daily practice of yoga, which this gosling seems to be engaged in, these goslings demonstrate the same selectivity when grazing and browsing as their naturally reared brothers and sisters. This would suggest some form of innate knowledge since these goslings have no contact with parent geese, until they have paired up and are released back into the wild. The opportunity for further research boggles my mind. There is just so much that we don't understand. #NeneGoslings #Slimbridge
