"To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents for untold thousands of year, to see the running of the old eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be".....Rachel Carson
..it was Saturday, about 7am, i'd been on the streets since 3am ...and I found myself on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, the day was just breaking and two young guys passed by ... on their way home from a Friday night out .. they stopped for a chat, they were friendly, knowledgable around the camera and genuinely interested in what I was doing.
Hope you like the pic guys ...

look in the eyes. Eyes show you wether it is a herbivore or a predator. The Eyes of a herbivore are at the sides of the and often they have a horizontal slot. So they can see movements better. Predators need a clear knowledge of the distance, their eyes are in front of the head and very sharp
At the time, I was intrigued with something written in German on the other side of the world. Looking at it now with a knowledge of the rules of composition, I see that the biker coincidentally is exactly where he should be in a deliberate composition.

There is not an ounce,
not a glimmer of sadness or
even knowledge in forsythia.
Pure, undiluted, untouched joy.

Harrow school library. The Vaughan Library is over 150 years old and was designed in Victorian Gothic style by George Gilbert Scott, who also conceived St Pancras Station in London. Refurbished and enlarged 23 years ago, it is staffed today by qualified librarians and open daily for boys to study, browse and enjoy a quiet space.
It’s important to know who you are. At least until you figure out that who you are has nothing to do with anything you think about that.

Large Red Damselfly:-
Damselflies are very difficult to ID accurately so we have made a best guess on their names to the best of our ability, we are happy to be corrected by anyone with more knowledge. (Gordon & Maureen)
Damselflies are insects in the sub-order Zygoptera (meaning "paired-wings"). All four wings are near enough equal in size and shape. They are usually small, weakly flying insects that stay close to the water margins or water surface. When at rest, most species hold their wings along the length of their abdomen. The Emerald Damselflies are an exception and usually hold their wings partly open when at rest. They are therefore known as Spreadwings in North America. The eyes are always separated, never touching. The larvae have external plates (lamellae) at the end of the abdomen, which act as accessory gills.
In Great Britain and Ireland there are about 20 species that may be encountered and a few that are now extinct. These species fall into 4 families and 9 genera. A partial taxonomic "tree" for the damselflies is shown below.

Era bellissima, lei, e guardava sempre il mare. Per poter vedere quegli occhi, lui, il mare lo tenne sempre alle spalle. E non lo vide mai.
She was beautiful, her, and always looked at the sea. In order to see those eyes, he, the sea always kept behind. And he never saw him.

On the night of 10th May this year we had a major flood event in Hobart, Tasmania. We had 3.5 times the average monthly rainfall in 24 hours - 130mm.
On that night it was very stormy. But when it was in full force it was quite extraordinary. Our laundry ceiling collapsed and we had a river of water flowing through the ceiling. Our family had a bucket train going to minimise the damage as best we could.
And the whole time, there was constant lightning in the sky. Non-stop. Never seen anything like it. Almost expected to see the rim of a massive ufo appear through the clouds.
The next morning when we looked at the world around us, we saw that the University suffered much worse than we did. This photo is of the Law building - water flowed through the library, bursting the doors and a river of books were swept onto the car park and the oval. Quite extraordinary. The engineering building basement was flooded completely.
So six months later, our laundry is finally being repaired by the insurance company. Either a testament to how widespread the damage was and the lack of resources to fix everything in a reasonable time, or something else.

Students in besieged Eastern Ghouta practice writing in a classroom. There have been over 4,000 attacks on schools in a four year span (Save the Children), and one in three schools are closed due to destruction, use for military purposes, or to shelter displaced people (HRW). Enrollment rates are as low as six percent in territories which face indiscriminate air strikes (Save the Children). As an act of defiance, many schools have been moved to underground locations, to enlighten the generation that will rebuild Syrian society from the ground up.

In the shady autumn forest, where mushrooms of all colors grew from the moss-covered ground, I met an elderly couple. They were originally from Vladivostok and had been living in Germany for 25 years. With a confident eye, they collected edible mushrooms and knew each species by name. The woman told me about traditional recipes and remedies, some of which are made with vodka—knowledge she had gained not from books, but from experience. Buy mushrooms? Only button mushrooms, and even then rarely. Everything else is far too dangerous.
And so a beautiful moment in the forest turned into a rich exchange about nature, origins, and ancient knowledge.

The bible is a book of knowledge. It's teachings have brought much good to the world. #bible #knowledge
"Ipsa scientia potestas est". The phrase “Knowledge is power” is commonly attributed to Francis Bacon,1597
I am beginning to wonder --
recently it seems the "power is power" and knowledge seems to have no place in American politics.
On Tuesday, the director of the US National Counterterrorism Center, Joe Kent, resigned over the war in Iran, urging Trump to "reverse course".
In a letter, Kent argued that Iran posed no imminent threat to the US, despite the administration's repeated claims to the contrary.
Recently, Donald Trump made several blunt comments about Joe Kent after Kent resigned from his role as director of the National Counterterrorism Center in March 2026.
What Trump said:
Trump dismissed Kent as “weak on security”.
He said it was “a good thing that he’s out” of the administration.
He criticised Kent’s judgement, saying people who think Iran isn’t a threat are “not smart” or “not savvy.”
Kent resigned in protest over the U.S. war with Iran, arguing the conflict was unnecessary and based on misleading information.
Trump, by contrast, has defended the war as necessary for national security and based on credible threats.
And the weirdest bit of all - - - Trump nominated Kent in February 2025 to be director of the National Counterterrorism Center.
