As you may know, my primary source when preparing a trip to discover the most fascinating Romanesque monuments in France (and elsewhere) is the Zodiaque collection of books, published between 1950 and 2000 by the Benedictine monks of La Pierre-qui-Vire in Burgundy, under the ægis of (and with photographs by) my mentor Dom Angelico Surchamp, osb. The Languedoc roman volume in that collection mentioned this isolated church of which I had never heard but which was conveniently located right next to the spa resort of Lamalou-les-Bains in the département of Hérault.
I say “conveniently” because, to tell you the truth, the real, primary purpose for which I drove down to Languedoc in November 2022 was not to photograph Romanesque churches (although that would obviously be a welcome complement), but to bring my beloved Revox B77 Mark II tape deck to a competent “fixer” who lived in a village not far from Lamalou. Months ago, I had stupidly broken one of the façade switches, and now the sick boy had to be taken to a healer to be fixed. And while the artisan was doing his thing on the Revox, I got to drive around and see beautiful old stones...
Back to the main matter, the church we are visiting today was built on the remains of an early Christian sanctuary built around the late 300s on the Gallo-Roman site of Rhèdes (traces of it have been found by archæologists). Then, in 551 (there is a most rare written trace), a new church was ordered to be built over the primitive one by “a King of France” whose name is not mentioned —and of course, “France” did not exist as such at that time.
That church was then donated to the Benedictine abbey of Villemagne at a date unknown, but it is mentioned in the last will and testament of Guillaume, viscount of Béziers and Agde († 990 AD), and again in 1153 as a priory of Villemagne.
Stylistically, the church we see today belongs to the First Romanesque Art of the 11th century, but there are indications of an earlier construction date for some parts of it, probably around Year 1000 or even before that milestone. It is a simple yet ample church, very old but beautifully preserved and restored, with none of the absurd excesses of the 19th century. It has been listed as a Historic Landmark since 1880 and the acoustics are so good there are many concerts of all kinds of music during the Summer season. It has been deconsecrated at some point but I haven’t found the exact date.
The remarkable medium to large apparel and the two-tier bench running around the sides of the nave are reminiscent of monuments older than Year 1000, but that remains my personal assessment, as there is no written or other evidence backing it up.

PADDY: "Hullo everyone! Do you know what? It is a public holiday on Tuesday in Melbourne, where we live, because Tuesday is the day for the horserace that stops a nation the..."
EMMETT: "That must be a big race, Paddy!"
PADDY: "What, Emmett?"
EMMETT: "To stop a nation, I mean. If it stops the nation it must be very big indeed!" *Awestruck.*
SCOUT: "What horsey race is being celebrated tomorrow, Paddy?"
PADDY: "Well Scout, I was just about to tell everyone. It's the Melbourne Cup!"
SCOUT: "Hoorah!" *Jumps up and down excitedly.* "I love horseys!"
ROSIE: "Oh me too!"
BOGART: "Me too!"
EMMETT: "Me three!"
SCOUT: "Goody!" *Jumps up and down even more.* "Let's all ride imaginary horsies! Giddy up horsey! Don't you stop. Just let your feet go clippity-clop!"
PADDY: "Ahem!" *Clears throat.* "Before I was interrupted..." *Gives Emmett and Scout a hard stare which they ignore as they ride their imaginary horses.* "Lots of people go to the Melbourne Cup every year, and they get dressed up in beautiful clothes. They watch the horses race and there is even a fashion parade called Fashions on the field."
SCOUT: *Stops riding imaginary horse.* "Ooohhh! Can we go, Paddy?" *Hopeful.*
PADDY: "No Scout."
SCOUT: "But why not, Paddy? It would have been my first Melbourne Cup." *Disappointed.*
PADDY: "The Melbourne Cup is no place for little bears unless they are accompanied by their Daddy or Mummy, and as Daddy isn't going, we won't be going either."
SCOUT: "Oh I am disappointed about that, Paddy."
PADDY: "I know, Scout. But don't worry, we can all still celebrate here at home!"
SCOUT: *Perks up.* "How Paddy?"
PADDY: "Well as you can see, we have a Melbourne Cup tea party here on the lawns, and I asked everybear to dress up so that we can have Fashions on the Field - Bear Style."
SCOUT: "Oh! I was wondering why you asked us all to come to tea in our best finery! I had trouble picking what was my very best finery."
PADDY: "Well, you do have a very large and..." *Pauses as he thinks of the right word to use.* "Theatrical wardrobe."
SCOUT: "Thank you Paddy!" *Bows.*
PADDY: "That is a very pretty hat you are wearing, Bogart."
BOGART: "Oh thank you, Paddy! I like a classical look." *Preens.* "Your hat is very pretty too. I think blue suits you."
PADDY: "Oh thank you, Bogart."
EMMETT: *Tugs on Bogart's white plush arm.* "Do you like my beret, Bogart? I borrowed it from Scout because I don't own a hat."
BOGART: "Oh I do, Emmett! It looks très chic on you!" *Giggles.*
EMMETT: "Très chic, Bogart? What's that? It sounds like a sneeze!" *Giggles.*
BOGART: *Giggles more.* "I am told it is foreign for very pretty. A little frog at the bottom of the garden taught me!"
JAGO: "I would have liked to have worn Paddy's hat." *Grumbles.* "I think it would suit me better. It's blue after all, and I love blue. I hope Odessa doesn't look at me and think I look silly in this smaller red hat." *Blushes pink beneath blue mohair plush.*
DAISY-MAUD: *Giggles.* "Oh! It's alright, Jago."
JAGO: "Alright, Daisy-Maud?"
DAISY-MAUD: "I mean you look very fetching in that red hat, even if it isn't blue. And it's not too small. It looks the perfect size for your head. I hope that Benny doesn't mind that I'm just wearing my everyday blue floral hat for today's Fashion on the Field - Bear Style." *Blushes pink beneath mohair plush.*
JAGO: "Daisy-Maud! Why would Benny mind? He is a bear of very good taste, and he loves you, just as you are!" *Nods emphatically.*
CORNELIA: "Well, I think you both look lovely in your hats."
DAISY-MAUD: "Oh thank you, Cornelia. You look very smart in your hat too, and I love your lace parasol."
CORNELIA: "Oh thank you! It's new! I found it in one of Daddy's cupboards and I thought to myself, how sad it is that this parasol is sitting, hidden here. So I appropriated it! And I borrowed my hat from Rosie."
ROSIE: "Well, I didn't want to wear that hat for today's Fashion on the Field - Bear Style, and it suits you."
CORNELIA: "Oh thank you, Rosie." *Preens.* "Your lovely straw hat really suits you as well, and compliments your tutu."
ROSIE: "Oh thank you, Cornelia! I know!" *Preens.*
PADDY: "Everybear looks so smart and select!"
SCOUT: "Hoorah!" *Jumps up and down excitedly.* "What do I get when I win Fashions on the Field - Bear Style, Paddy?"
PADDY: "If you win, Scout!" *Looks disconcertedly at Scout.* "Who says that you will win Fashions on the Field - Bear Style?"
SCOUT: *Giggles and waves paw dismissively at Paddy.* "Well Paddy, let's be honest: I wear this beautiful green hat so much better than you wear your beautiful blue one. I think it would have been better to give it to Jago to wear."
JAGO: *Turns to Daisy-Maud.* "I told you so, didn't I, Daisy-Maud?"
SCOUT: *Continues.* "And Paddy, I am much younger than you are, and I take very good care of myself and my woollen plush!" *Preens.*
PADDY: "Scout!" *Mortified.* "I'll have you know that I think I happen to look very fetching in this hat." *Wags paw at Scout.*
"And I'm not as old as you think!"
SCOUT: "Well, on that point we may agree to disagree." *Nods emphatically.* "Anyway, who will be the judge of Fashions on the Field - Bear Style, Paddy?"
PADDY: "Oh, I hadn't thought of that." *Ponders.* "I know!
Daddy can be the judge!"
SCOUT: "Excellent choice of judge Paddy!"
PADDY: "Thank you, Scout."
SCOUT: "Let's all go find him and show off our finery!"
CORNELIA: "No need! here comes Daddy now!"
DADDY: "Hullo everybear!"
PADDY, SCOUT, BOGART, ROSIE, EMMETT, DAISY-MAUD, JAGO and CORNELIA: "Hullo Daddy!"
DADDY: "Are you all enjoying your Melbourne Cup tea party?"
PADDY, SCOUT, BOGART, ROSIE, EMMETT, DAISY-MAUD, JAGO and CORNELIA: "Oh yes, Daddy!"
DADDY: "That's good everybear. I've just baked a cake for you. I am letting it cool down so that you don't burn your paws or cute little pink bear tongues."
PADDY, SCOUT, BOGART, ROSIE, EMMETT, DAISY-MAUD, JAGO and CORNELIA: "Oh thank you, Daddy!"
SCOUT: "Daddy? Daddy!"
DADDY: "Yes Scout?"
SCOUT: "Daddy, we want you to judge Fashions on the Field - Bear style."
DADDY: "Well I..."
PADDY, SCOUT, BOGART, ROSIE, EMMETT, DAISY-MAUD, JAGO and CORNELIA: "Please Daddy! Please!"
DADDY: "Oh very well then."
PADDY, SCOUT, BOGART, ROSIE, EMMETT, DAISY-MAUD, JAGO and CORNELIA: "Hoorah!" *Jump up and down with joy.*
DADDY: *Looks closely at everybear's outfit.* "Hhhmmm..." *Looks more closely.* "Hhhmmm..."
ROSIE: "Who is the winner, Daddy?" *Preens.*
DADDY: "Well..."
SCOUT: "Is it me, Daddy?" *Preens.*
DADDY: "Well yes, Scout."
SCOUT: "Hoorah!" *Jumps up and down with excitement.*
PADDY, BOGART, ROSIE, EMMETT, DAISY-MAUD, JAGO and CORNELIA: "Ooohhh!" *Diusappointed.*
DADDY: "No, no Scout and everybear. You misunderstand me. I think you all look wonderful, so I declare you all winners of Fashions on the Filed - Bear Style!"
PADDY, SCOUT, BOGART, ROSIE, EMMETT, DAISY-MAUD, JAGO and CORNELIA: "Oh hoorah!" *Jump up and down with excitement.* "Thank you Daddy!"
Paddy is right. Tuesday is a public holiday in Victoria for the "race that stops a nation": the Melbourne Cup, which is run from the Flemington race track on the first Tuesday of November every year. Every year they have "fashions on the field" where women and men get to strut their most beautiful racewear. Dressed as they are, I think everybear have a fine chance of winning joint first prize. Don't you?
This beautiful nursery rhyme tea set was made in England by the Shell China Company in the 1930s. It features cups, saucers and plates as well as a teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl. Each piece is gilt edged and decorated and feature different nursery rhymes including: "Ding Dong Dell Pussy’s in the Well", "The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe", "Old King Cole", "Pat a Cake Pat a Cake Baker’s Man", "Little Tommy Tittlemouse", "See Saw Margery Daw" and &This Little Pig Went to Market" amongst others. The set I acquired from England, and it is a sister set to a 1920s Shell China Company nursery rhyme tea set and a 1920s faerie tale tea set. There are also doll (bear) sized tea spoons which are sterling silver salt and mustard spoons.
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
Rosie is Scout's cousin, because like Scout, she is a free trade knitted bear from Africa. She was made in Kenya by one of the Kenana Knitters, Martha Wanjira. She is made from home spun and dyed wool. She was a gift to me from two very dear friends, including the one who gave Scout to Paddy.
Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.
Jago was a gift from a dear friend in England. He is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.
Daisy Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads that match her pretty sunhat, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her new Daddy.
Made by Merrythought in England, Emmett is a charming little bear, sweet and smiling, crafted from multi-tonal marl grey mohair and featuring golden velvet paws. He is accessorised with a classic tartan woollen scarf. He is number 23 or a limited worldwide edition of 200.
Cornelia, I found in an antique and vintage market quite recently. She is a vintage edition Russ Bear from their Mohair Collection. She is made of deliberately mottled mohair to give her that vintage look. One of a limited edition of 10,000, she was designed by artist Carol Hosfstad and is completely handmade.
You know how it goes, "Be dignified" they say, "We want a decent birthday photo" they say, act your age for once" they say as they pin a badge as big as a dustbin lid on you and instruct you to wear it all day.
With all those words floating around in my mind, a playful thought pushes it's way to the front as I click the shutter release ..................
"Can't blame me, it's my second childhood" I say.

Since you already know where we’re headed this Saturday (back to the old Southaven Books-a-Million to finish off the set we started two weeks ago, of course!), it’d be kinda pointless to try to tease it :P So instead, for this week’s “teaser” photo I’ve just compiled the pictures of the old store from BAM’s website store finder, seeing as how they’re pretty valuable in their own right (because they’re obsolete now!). Clockwise from the top left you’ve got a register portal at the checkstand; the bargain books section; the T-shirt display in the very back center of the store; the music aisle along the right-side wall; another shot of the bargain section in the center left of the store; and a view of the rear aisle toward the back right corner. I’m not sure when all of these photos would have been taken, but the fact that the bargain books are located where they are (center left of the store, as noted), says to me that they were taken a) after summer 2015, when a reset was conducted moving the bargain display to that spot, or b) sometime way before then, assuming they were located there once upon a time only to be moved to another spot later and then back to that spot in 2015 (convoluted enough theory for you? XD ). In any case, I don’t think BAM has realized that they don’t apply to the Southaven location anymore, considering they’re still on the store’s webpage! So too is the note that this store features a Joe Muggs, which is no longer true with the new location. At least the address was changed :P
I would've linked to the store locator page for this store, but it didn't look like it would take you to the Southaven store specifically, so I gave that up. If you type in the zip code 38671 it oughta show!
As I said, my final set of photos from the old Southaven Books-a-Million is coming Saturday. Stick around! :)
**If you're reading this in my Gobs of G.O.B.S. album... I have other photos of the old store, but since they weren't taken during the closure sale (and considering that there really wasn't a closure sale!), I haven't included them in this album. If you're interested in seeing them, please check out the album linked at the top of this description.

Norio knows that it's time to go home after his treatment and "why aren't we going right now?". Poor Norio had to have his claws trimmed. Coincidentally, a dog was in the waiting room and barking loudly, which gave lots of stress to poor Norio, adding to the stress of having his claws trimmed. It took three of us to restrain him and the vet trimmed Norio's claws very quickly.
How many of us take a pic and instantly think of someone at the same moment?
We've been walking our local beaches after dinner the past few evenings,
and when I saw this rock and the seaweed placed exactly as it is here,
I cracked up, thinking of my hilarious flickr friend, JOYCE because one never knows
what her hair is going to do from one day to the next!
We also have a joke about lipstick, so I just had to add a few embellishments to this before
posting!!! See if you can find 4 added features (my signature doesn't count) . . .
Have a GREAT WEEKEND everyone!

Norio knows it's a bit cooler in the house. We took down the insulation yesterday but kept a warm tunic on him last night. We also provided him with a warming disc if he wanted it. He was happy in the morning, however, when I fed him a small snack.

The Golden Ratio informs a lot of my art and photographic composition. The Golden Ratio also informs the design of the golden revolver on all the swimsuits and lingerie, as well as the 45surf logo! Not so long ago, I came up with the Golden Ratio Principle which describes why The Golden Ratio is so beautiful.
The Golden Number Ratio Principle: Dr. E’s Golden Ratio Principle: The golden ratio exalts beauty because the number is a characteristic of the mathematically and physically most efficient manners of growth and distribution, on both evolutionary and purely physical levels. The golden ratio ensures that the proportions and structure of that which came before provide the proportions and structure of that which comes after. Robust, ordered growth is naturally associated with health and beauty, and thus we evolved to perceive the golden ratio harmonies as inherently beautiful, as we saw and felt their presence in all vital growth and life—in the salient features and proportions of humans and nature alike, from the distribution of our facial features and bones to the arrangements of petals, leaves, and sunflowers seeds. As ratios between Fibonacci Numbers offer the closest whole-number approximations to the golden ratio, and as seeds, cells, leaves, bones, and other physical entities appear in whole numbers, the Fibonacci Numbers oft appear in nature’s elements as “growth’s numbers.” From the dawn of time, humanity sought to salute their gods in art and temples exalting the same proportion by which all their vital sustenance and they themselves had been created—the golden ratio.

He knows he's handsome, and seems to love to pose when I bring out the camera ^_^ They're finally beginning to relax and act like our family now - like they now each evening rest on the sofa near us and they're using the scratching post loads, and finally beginning to groom ^_^ I can now finally stroke them both out of their bed - they're doing so well and I'm so happy for them!
Have a great weekend! xo
I don't know why but I really like this P Fence. Wish you all a lovely Friday :)
To get the wrong road... just to learn what was the right one
To cry waiting for a smile
To rest before run a mile
To lie just to tell the truth
To forgot you just to think of you
To lose hoping that one day
I'll have much more
To close a broken window
Waiting for an open door
The sun goes down
For the moon to shine
I lose what I cannot get
Until the day that I'll have what is mine
What is right today
Tomorrow may be wrong
So don't even dare to think
That you already know it all
No matter how many years you've already lived
What matters is how much you've learned with all of them
So fight even if you’ve got to fall
Just to rise up for another day
No matter if you're lost
Because I'll be here to help you find your way
No matter how many times you fight
As long as you never stop fighting
And fight…. Just keep fighting back

I know the 635 only runs to the school from this bus station during the mornings but this unit was blinded for the that run and it made sense to have it on my feed.
It focuses on two main roads but has a small loop at the end to terminate at the school. Plenty of children use this route to either get home or connect to more frequent routes at Hounslow.

You know what they say about the early morning light in photography.
Being a night owl, I don’t get to see it often. But this time it was worth it.
A personal fave.
This is a view from Graslei underneath St. Michael’s Bridge (Sint-Michielsbrug) looking towards Korenlei - the two landmark streets of Ghent.

Yes I know, incredibly lame title haha.
This was my surrealism project for photo class, and basically my second time ever using Photoshop, so I know it's not the best. And the colors were all kinda mehh so I sepia'd it up.
It took me forever to come up with an idea though and I didn't have time to shoot. This is kind of generic I guess, but i think it worked out alright.
It looks good on black too!
p.s. I'm still really busy so there's not much time for flickr-
i'll get around to your streams this weekend, I promise :)
I seldom know how the processing of a shoot will go. For Nagasita, I suddenly find myself in the middle of a late-1800's picture postcard theme with a bit of 1920's movie set lighting and... I have no idea where this thing is headed... except this reminds me of an Art Nouveau Goddess from the post-Empire Age.

I don’t really know the full history of this clock. (If I remember correctly it is a Waterbury clock we think is from around the 1920’s or teens. The label on the back is pretty degraded. I have a photo of the back of the clock saved somewhere and I need to find it and put somewhere easy to access.)
This was my mother’s mother’s clock. When I was little it hung on the wall of her house in Hiawassee Georgia. She kept it wound and it would always chime the hour and give one ding for the half-hour. It has a Very distinctive, Very loud chime. Not even really a chime... this thing goes DONG CLANG DONG and it’s spectacular.
I do have one great true story about this clock, it isn’t my story and I don’t remember the finer details, but I’ve been meaning to write this down anyway.
Back in the day in very rural USA (and other places?) they had a telephone “party line” where all the telephones in the area shared one line, so you could pick up the phone and talk to multiple people in the area all at once. Also, if someone was already on a call to someone else you could pick up your phone receiver and listen to them. So, when your neighbors had some really juicy drama, affairs, or drunken in-fighting over the telephone... you could just pick up the party line, sit very quietly, and secretly listen to all the good gossip. Until your clock chimes on the hour and the rowdy neighbor fighting with his girlfriend hears it and says something along the lines of: “I know who’s clock that is. I’m not going to say anything, but she better hang up.” My sweet Mamaw got herself busted listening in on the party line because of this clock.
At some point when I was a kid we brought the clock home with us from Georgia to Alaska and it hung in my house growing up. I was always enamored of this clock and loved to keep it wound and have it chime the hour, but it sortof drove the rest of the family crazy so we never kept it going long. After I moved out and got my own place my mom really surprised me and let me take the clock. (Our relationship isn’t that great, drama for a different story, and when I was still on speaking terms with her I lived in fear that she would demand this clock back if I ever acted too happy about having it.)
My husband and I kept this clock wound for quite a few years! She keeps time wonderfully. Her beautiful loud CLANG DONG CLANG discouraged some unwanted overnight houseguests from making repeat visits! My husbands friend tried to couch surf at our house... sure you can sleep on the couch... in the room with the clock!!
Currently we don’t keep her wound, I need to get a new clock key for her, the one we have is splitting and will break if we try to keep using it.
I always though the figurehead on the clock was a representation of Athena, but now I’m not sure?! I think winged helmets are usually Mercury/Hermes, but I don’t know. Any ideas who she could really be? Maybe just decorative?
(The bubble-level is off. How annoying. One more thing from the 2018 earthquake I haven’t fixed yet. Not a priority because she isn’t running.)
Ok I know, this little bird is not too exciting. Brown and nondescript. But it also very special.
It is an Eastern Bristlebird and is endangered. It is only found in a few pockets of bush in NSW, is very shy, reclusive and hard to see. The unbelievable news is that we found it.
My husband and I took a drive to Perpendicular Lighthouse near Jervis Bay in NSW on Easter Sunday. My friend, in the fantastic tradition of mad birders, told me to walk to the light house take the path along the cliffs and look to the left of the cliffs on the exact rocks overlooking the ocean AT sunset and the birds should pop out of the bush and say hi.
I eagerly did everything I was instructed to. Zero birds. There were 20 abseilers with ropes, hooks and water bottles hanging over the edge of the cliffs. Those secretive and cryptic birds were nowhere to be seen or heard. Truly there was no hope because there were also so many people walking around looking at the historic site (being the busiest long weekend of the year and all).
I was very disappointed because I don’t think I will be going to that neck of the woods again.
I tried hard, pointing my binoculars at Wattle birds, Wrens, and a Firetail with its Red eyebrows. Suddenly the ‘inadvertent birder’’, B, shouted excitedly. There it is!
Except it wasn’t. It was a little finch. In the Australian bush we a have a phenomenon that when there are a few birds usually there are others. I got my phone out and played the Bristlebird call. It shot at high speed out of the bush next to me. I was so excited that I threw my mobile onto the ground so that I could take a photo. The bird actually ran over my phone with its new cover and credit cards.
So here it is…… THE EASTERN BRISTLEBIRD
Just some bokeh from the seaside. I know ... too much seaside photos lately. But I really had fun with my camera there. I could take gazzilion photos per day ... :)

Did you know that people without friends are more likely to die an early death? It’s true. Just ask science. To up your chances of living a long, happy life, having a bunch of fair-weather buddies won’t do the trick. You need a diverse, well-rounded entourage that will stick with you through thick and thin.To the living we owe respectFriendshipFriendship QuotesInspirational QuotesThe following types of friends are just what you need to keep the doctor away.1. A Loyal Best FriendSometimes a loyal best friend is the only thing you need to stay sane. Everyone needs a non-judgmental friend who will support them no matter what. This is the kind of friend who lets you be a hot mess and knows all of your deepest and darkest secrets, but still loves you all the same.2. A Fearless AdventurerWe live in a big world where there are so many places to see, people to meet, and experiences to be had, yet so many of us are stuck in our own routines and forget to, well, live. We all need an adventurous friend who will pull us out of our shells and introduce us to new ideas, cultures, philosophies, and activities.3. A Brutally Honest ConfidantThere’s certain situations in life where we need to hear the harsh truth. That’s what the brutally honest confidant is for. If you’re in a rocky relationship and everyone’s telling you that it’s perfectly normal that you’re back with that special someone for the 8th time in the last 2 years, the brutally honest confidant is there to yank your rose-colored glasses off and tell you, “Enough. Stop with all that break-up-and-get-back-together drama. You deserve better.“Friends are supposed to be honest with each other. If you find someone who is brutally honest with you (in a constructive way), then hold on to this person! People like that are hard to come by these days.4. A Wise MentorJesse Jackson once said, “Never look down on someone unless you’re helping them up.“If you have someone smart, inspiring, and admirable in your life who practices this philosophy, you’re extremely lucky. We all need a friend who inspires us to be better people without making us feel inadequate. Plus, being around such a person will challenge us to better ourselves every day.The wise mentor in your life doesn’t have to be someone who shares the same occupation or hobbies with you. It’s simply someone who’s a few steps ahead of you in life and has enough wisdom and patience to guide you in the right direction. It can be anyone — a colleague, a friend who’s beyond their years, or an older neighbor — as long as you look up to this person and want to be more like them.

I know, another moon picture but it does look different every night : ) I like the shadowy craters at the bottom left. It's still mindboggling to think people have walked on it ! I don't buy the stupid conspiracy theories !
“Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.” -- George Eastman
It is not often I post things to my stream that were not taken by me, but this is one occasion. Simply, this is a glass negative found across the street at the Salvation Army. If I had to guess I would say it is probably a bit over 100 years old, considering that was the era when glass plates were being shot.
Say the 1890's. Amazing huh?
So at about 3 pm today I found myself holding a piece of glass with an image of three gentlemen on it over 100 years old.
I love my job.
But more importantly, I love photography. This really just sort of blows my mind. I start thinking about the fact that I am holding a once-sensitized piece of glass, that contains the imprint of light that bounced off of these three men over 100 years ago. In a sense it is almost a "light shadow" cast by them and captured on this glass.
And here I am using a state of the art scanner to digitize that image and bring it on to the web. Once again, amazing.
I don't want to make it seem like I am taking a dig at digital photography (digital imaging is why this image exists on the web right now) but this is a very big reason why I shoot film. The tangible nature. Being able to hold a piece of film that was struck by the very light that came off of the subject. Thinking that, that very same piece of film may one day be pulled from a box in someone's attic 80 years down the road, and that someone can hold it up to the light and see what I saw. They will even be able to still print it or scan it.
But it is not the ability to still print it or scan it that so amazes me. It is the physical evidence that light has left behind on this particular piece of film, or paper, or glass. Digital doesn't have that. The sensor carries no trace of that light, rather it is converted into electronic bits and bytes. A digital copy. A replica of what that light cast. There is nothing tangible, nothing physical to hold unless a print is made, which so often it never is.
And in some way this makes me deeply uneasy. I don't like thinking of the work of my life as being so intangible. It scares me in a sense and I never feel quite easy with digital images, despite the many amazing shots I have taken on digital cameras. And also despite how careful and redundant I am in backing those same images up. But it is not just my work. I think of all the pictures snapped every day. All those snap shots of sons and daughters. Mothers and grandmas. Beautiful sunsets and sunrises. And I think of what awful percentage of those images will have ceased to exist within ten years. Or twenty. Let alone a hundred years from now.
I know that even film is not permanent, nothing is really. Not our negatives. Nor us. Or our planet, or even our universe. But nonetheless, I am pretty certain that I will not be able to pull any of my CDs of digital files out of a box in 100 years and still have them be usable. Nor any CF cards. My external drives won't last more than 10 years I bet. My digital files won't ever be anything more than bits and bytes. Sure I can print them, but those are just copies of copies. Better than nothing, but still far lacking.
And so I shoot film, because I like to think each of those negatives carries the physical effect of light off of a beautiful waterfall striking it. Or the light bouncing off of my son Owen playing when he was 6 months old. And then again when he was 12 months old. Or even the very light that reflected off of an old friend no longer living. It is not so hard to hold a negative, or a plate like this, in your hand and feel like you are holding just a tiny shred of some past time itself. The last physical remainder of a moment long extinct, and that when I hold a negative in my hand, I am touching that light again. And that is one of the things that drives me to shoot film. That deep sense of not just recording light and time, but preserving it.
“What makes photography a strange invention is that its primary raw materials are light and time.” -- John Berger

Begin van een serie! Want hier maak je natuurlijk meer dan één portretje van.

I don't know why this happened. Yes, it rained, it froze. But why the ice marbles on the ends of the stems? Why are they frosted inside on the surface of the seed pod like they were some kind of antique paperweight, like some kind of souvenir snow globe? This was unexpected. And I guess it reminds me why I should examine things carefully. There are surprises to be had!
Right now the world is ice. On the one hand, there are a lot of very interesting potential photographs out there. On the other, mobility is a problem. Right now, walking to the street from the door is a trick. It's like a skating rink, on a hill!
To take these shots, for example, I wore gaiters and I walked carefully on top of the snow, where I could. The snow is between two and three feet deep in most places. Except in some spots it has drifted deeper than that. And there is between a half and three quarters of an inch of ice on it, in most places. Except in some places it is thinner than that.
There is no way of telling where the ice is thinner just by looking at it. You can guess, depending on the location: if it is in a very sunny spot, if it is under a tree that has a lot of foliage like a hemlock or a cedar. But basically you walk very carefully. Because the snow is not super dense. And if that ice breaks? BOOM! Down you go. So you walk in a crouch, like Spiderman. And you are prepared for a few boo boos. But the whole situation is so INTERESTING and beautiful, that you just have to get a closer look.
This, too, reminds me of that Terry Pratchett quote:
"Sometimes glass glitters more than diamonds because it has more to prove."
This is everything you need to know about red wine. After five years of intense work and study in the wine industry, I am sure of it. When I train someone to be an "expert" wine seller, this is all the info that I expect them to know about red wine by the end of the training. If you were to taste 10,000 red wines in a year (as I do every year), then what is in this infographic would be everything that your tongue would know for certain about red wine. Knowing everything on this infographic is the reason that when I read a wine label, I actually know what I am holding will taste like, and it is the reason that I don't need a second opinion when I look at a wine list.
The full text follows:
IN GENERAL
1.Red wine does not pair with blue cheese, chocolate, or fish, and rarely does it pair with spice.
2. You don't serve it cold, hot, or room temperature; you serve it cool or “air conditioned room temperature.”
3.
All red wine is dry and grapes are the only ingredient no matter how “sweet” the description sounds (i.e., it might smell like cinnamon, berries, & caramel, but it is still dry and made with nothing but grapes).
4. All else equal, the more sunshine on the vine, the fuller and fruitier the resulting wine.
ITALY
1. Italian red wine tastes like cherries. All else equal, Italian red will be lighter-bodied the farther north the vines are grown, fuller-bodied the farther south the vines are grown, and fuller-bodied the more you spend. What grape it's made with rarely changes these trends.
2. Italian wine is all about nuance. Within this ocean of cherries, each appellation, vineyard, and bottle presents its cherries differently. The cherries can be baked, fresh, or raisined... covered in chocolate, herbs, or wood... or even buried under stones, sand, and tar pits! The Zen of Italian red wine is how every bottle simultaneously tastes exactly alike and completely different.
3. Chianti is made from Sangiovese grapes grown in a region of Tuscany called "Chianti." Think sour cherries.
4. Barbera d'Asti v. Barbera d'Alba: Barbera is a grape. Asti and Alba are towns. "d'" means "from.” Barbera grown in either town taste like bright, mouthwatering cherries.
5. Primitivo is how you say Zinfandel in the heel of the boot. It tastes like cherry pie filling.
6. Reds from the “Toe of the Boot” smells like cherry potpourri.
7. Montepulciano is a grape. Abruzzo is a place. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo means both "Montepulciano grapes from Abruzzo" or "I want wine to drink with pizza, and I don't really care if the wine is bad."
8. In Valpolicella, the more you spend the better the wine is and the more it should taste like raisined cherries.
FRANCE
1. French wine tastes horrible until it tastes perfect, and it only tastes “ok” if you spend more than $20.
2. The Cotes-du-Rhone is a huge region that blends Grenache, Syrah, & Mourvedre grapes to make crappy wine that tastes like dark berries sprinkled with topsoil. The more you spend, the darker and fuller it will be. Cotes-du-Rhone wines only get serious if you see "Villages" and/or the name of a specific village on the label, e.g., Valréas or Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
3. The Loire: is too good to discuss here. “Good” means light, nuanced, and smells like things you shouldn't put in your mouth. The Loire loves Cabernet Franc, and every Cabernet Franc tastes like a smarmy, monocled grasshopper is swimming in your glass.
4. Burgundy, or if you want to ignore 4 billion years of geological evolution, "French Pinot Noir" is classified acre by acre to help represent how the land affects the wine. Burgundy is unique & compelling if it comes from a single vineyard, and it will generally suck if the grapes come from all over the region and the bottle is labeled as just “Burgundy” or “Bourgogne.” Each village in Burgundy tastes different. Wine from vineyards classified as Premier Cru or “1er” will be great, and wine from Grand Cru vineyards can be life-changing.
5. That being said, all Burgundy sucks because it is light.
6. You get what you pay for in Bordeaux, and it is mostly Merlot grapes with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes incorporated only to make the wine appear fancier.
7. The south and southwest of France are a mashup of the Rhone and Bordeaux in both grape choice and final flavor. Closer to Bordeaux wines tastes more like Bordeaux. Closer to the Rhône wines tastes more like Côtes du Rhône.
8. Beaujolais is secretly a region within Burgundy that uses Gamay grapes to make wine that tastes like pomegranates and cranberries. Beaujolais "Nouveau" is horrible. Otherwise, think of it as Burgundy that doesn't need aging.
SOUTH AFRICA
1. South African red wine tastes smokey, and if it is made from Pinotage grapes, it will taste like a smokey, peaty Scotch.
AUSTRALIA
1. All Australian red wines are fruity, but each great Australian red wine is fruity in its own, intriguing way.
3. The more you pay for it, the greater the depth of flavor it will have, and the deeper the breath you will have to take after tasting it.
4. $17-$25 is the sweet spot for "value." Cheaper and it is party wine. More expensive and it is for braggarts and experts.
5. The farther west and the farther south you go, the more complex the wines get. This includes Tasmania.
NEW ZEALAND
1. In 25 years, New Zealand might make better wine than France, but the vines need time to mature so most New Zealand wine tastes like a fruitier version of its French counterparts.
CALIFORNIA
1. California Pinot Noir ALWAYS tastes like cooked/stewed/or preserved fruit.
2. Napa Valley makes overpriced wine that tastes like dessert.
OREGON
1. Oregon wines are slightly fuller and fruitier fruitier versions of their European counterparts.
2. Oregon, like New Zealand, could soon overtake France..
3. Oregon's expensive wines are amazing values, but Oregon's cheap wines are a waste of money.
WASHINGTON
1. Washington reds taste like a cross between French wines & Australian wines.
2. Red Mountain has America's best “terroir.”
NEW YORK
1. New York reds taste like fish, and one day will be lauded for this.
IDAHO
1. Woe to the man who underestimates Idaho.
SPAIN
1. Spain is too sunny to make horrible wine.
2. Spain worships oak barrels.
3. These designations indicate how much time a wine spent in an oak barrel: Joven: no oak.Reserva: lots of oak, lots of aging. Gran Reserva: oaked and aged to the point of absurdity. Crianza: just enough oak” to give the wine a scent of roasted vanilla beans and soft earth. Crianza is the sweet spot.
2. Rioja is a place in Spain that uses Tempranillo grapes to make wine that tastes like cherries and beer burp tempered by the aforementioned designations of oak.
3. The Ribera del Duero is a region that tastes like Rioja on steroids.
4. Wine gets weird in Bierzo. Rust, herbs, and smokey flint are not unusual tasting notes in the aroma of wines of Spain's northwest.
5. Wine gets slutty in Catalunya, Jumilla, & La Mancha, etc. It's great, but extremely fruity and fun.
6. The Priorat exudes jammy fruits, hot spices, crushed stones, and graphite. It is expensive, opulent food wine.
7. Terra Alta and Montsant are basically Priorat without the hype.
8. Spain's geologic and geographic circumstances force its vines to produce astoundingly low yields per vine: lower yields mean more concentrated flavors!
PORTUGAL
1. Anything not produced by a cooperative has the possibility of being amazing.
2. Portugese reds often taste like Ports vinified to dry perfection.
AUSTRIA/GERMANY
1. Saint Laurent grapes taste like red fruits and dried meats.
2. Blaufränkisch is fruity, but with notes of herbs, spices, and underbrush.
3. Zweigelt tastes like cherries and spices.
4.Blauburgunder, Spätburgunder: other names for Pinot Noir.
ARGENTINA
1. Bonarda grapes taste like tart red fruits.
2. Malbec grapes are always chuggable, but the longer they spend in oak, the more robust they will be.
CHILE
1. Chocolate, green peppercorns, and roasted vanilla beans .
2. Carmenere: the long-lost grape of Bordeaux. It does the above to the extreme.
ISRAEL
1. Good Israeli reds smell like they were aged under an active volcano.
I know some of you may think that this is a strange picture
to end the series on and i thought to myself a few times now
that this image should have had him lying on the floor and out
cold but i could not do that to him so i just wanted you too see him
with out the drink and show you all the sane and normal side to him
and when looking at the other 4 pictures in the series and then looking at this
one its hard to think that this is the same guy and i must admit that when he is
on the wine he is crazy and very unpredictable and i hope one day he pulls him
self together or is it too late i dont know.anyway thankyou so much for looking
and taking the time too comment i really appreciate it thankyou and kind regards
to you all.
