I know of two restaurants named Garibaldi's. One we frequented every Friday night when we lived in Florida, and this one, that's attached to a gas station. It's not part of the gas station, just attached. The decor is odd, there's always a kindergartner running around the kitchen, and parking is a bitch. But their Mexican food is authentic, and awesome.

I don’t know if this does anything for anybody, but it’s a shot taken across a narrow lane to a practice of some sort, and includes the reflections of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery which I’m in! Any comments welcome. I suppose you could say these guys have been built in with the bricks!
If you are not French, it’s likely you haven’t ever heard the word “Saintonge”, and have no clue what it means. If you are French, it’s probably the same thing. Unless, that is, you are a fan of Romanesque, in which case you know that Saintonge, that small region of France centered around the town of Saintes (hence the name), not far from the Atlantic Ocean, just North of Bordeaux... features the highest density of Romanesque churches of all the country!
I had never visited that area of France, and so in the middle of October 2021, I took that long overdue trip and stayed two weeks in Saintes, driving left and right daily to photograph all the most significant Romanesque churches... and unfortunately leaving out many others, as they are so thick on the ground!
Today, we continue our visit of the church that will occupy us for the rest of the week, so rich it is from an architectural and artistic viewpoint.
Located in the village of Aulnay, on the border of Saintonge and Poitou, the Saint Peter church was built on a site where Pagan rites used to take place, and where at least one earlier church had been built, as archæology teaches us.
Built between 1120 and 1140, this church was listed as a Historic Landmark on the very first list in 1840, and is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, as it stands on a path to Compostela, the Via Turonensis that comes from Paris, Chartres and Tours. On that path, it is halfway between the cities of Poitiers and Saintes and remained a convenient stopover for pilgrims throughout the ages, and even today.
The earlier church, of which nothing but traces remain, was under the jurisdiction of the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Cyprien in Poitiers. Then, the place was handed over to the canons of the Poitiers cathedral, who decided to build the current church, funded it and remained in charge of it until the French Revolution. Located in Saintonge but under Poitevin jurisdiction, this church is a fascinating mix of both styles, with a floor plan of a Latin cross, as was customary in Poitevin Romanesque, while most Saintonge churches have a single nave without transept.
The church is particularly interesting because it managed to escape most of the dramatic events that mutilated so many others: Hundred Years War, Wars of Religion, etc. During the latter, a few sculpted heads were hammered by the Protestants as part of the iconoclastic doctrine taught by Calvin, but it never went further than that.
The old cemetery around the back of the church. For obvious sanitary reasons, it is not used any more, but there are still some very old tombs there, including sarcophagi from the Merovingian and Carolingian periods. Some may even be from the late Antiquity, around 300 or 400 CE.

When I was young, I was (as you might imagine) a completely voracious reader, particularly of any book that was animal-related. The first 100+ page book that I ever finished in a single day was Dr. Dolittle. I was especially fascinated with horses (what girl wasn't?) and remember racing into the library when I was young and scouring the downstairs children's section for books about Blaze the pony. I graduated to books about racehorses, particularly Man O'War, but so many others.
And then... and then there was The Black Stallion. I was stunned to find that this marvelous book was part of a series... twenty books in all. And dismayed to find that my local library did not have them all. I started to ask for those books for every birthday and Christmas, every year. I'm not sure how long it took me to collect all of them... if felt like a period of years, and I'm sure it was.
I still have those books (of course!) and have but to glance over at my bookshelf in the apartment to be reminded of the excitement that came from reading them. I've been debating a "book by the sea" image for some time, and finally remembered to take a few books with me during a trip to Bandon last weekend. Most of my Black Stallion books are paperback, but I have this one - the second in the series - in a faded hardcover version as well. It's frayed, well-used and smells the way old books smell (that is to say, fantastic). To kneel in the sand and make images of it with my Hasselblad, while the early morning light sparkled across the sand... felt like communing with a younger version of myself. And that was just fine by me.

Just a quick post tonight. I was slipping out of the Flickr-posting habit a bit and wanted to curb that. I'll be making a return visit to London in a couple of months. It will be coming at the tail end of a month of traveling that I am doing as part of a sabbatical my work has given me for 20 years there. It should be a fun but potentially exhausting bit of travel. I don't think I have ever been on the road for that length of time but I am looking forward to it. Thinking of London though inspired me to go back through my images from my only other trip to that city. There were still some I had never posted, just because I am kind of an image-making machine and if it doesn't get posted within the first month or two its chances fall precipitously. So I thought to give one of them a brief moment of light. I am sure they will have many new friends come April

I know I have often said this, but zebras are my favourite African animal. Whilst you may think that you see them everywhere on the plains of the game parks, sometimes you can go for a few hours without seeing them.
You know Johannes Vermeer’s quiet interiors. Few people know that Dutch artist Jacobus Vrel (active 1640-1660) was already producing scenes of this kind before the paint was dry on Vermeer’s first masterpiece. The Mauritshuis in The Hague NL shared the story of this mysterious painter in Vrel – Forerunner of Vermeer. Now an exhibition at Fondation Custodia in Paris.

I know this is not that great of a shot...if it were any other bird, I would not even post it. It is not a super focus, I had my telephoto, but even then, it is not very close up because this lady was way up in a tree over the lake. BUT! This is the first time I have ever seen one of these birds! I have seen many Kingfisher photos here on Flicker, but until last week, I didn't even know they lived around here! It was such a sweet surprise when I spotted her sitting up there. I Googled to make sure I had it right, it is a Belted Kingfisher. I discovered that the female is the one that gets the belted chest.

How do you know you have stayed in Epcot a long time past closing? I am guessing having the fountain water shut off on you might be a sign. Epcot has become the easiest park to shoot and close out after hours. I rarely even see security, never mind feeling pressured to leave. I had been shooting for quite some time this night after hours when just as I was setting up for this shot the fountain water turned off. Maybe it did not even have to do with the late hour and something else was up, but I am not one to be easily deterred so now I have this unique (but pointless?) shot with the fountain turned off. It is not the showcase of the shot anyways so I think it does not matter much.

You know when you see spit on your plants in the garden. Well, this is what lives inside! The Froghopper or sometimes called Spittlebug. The phlegm they live in is called Cuckoo Spit, secreted from their backside! They live in this munching away at the tender shoots and sap until adulthood. In some of the larger portions of spit, you will find mucky black stuff. This is the shedded skin of the bug as it matures.
More useless information on Froghoppers will be published once I get an image of an adult sometime in July :)
I know this has been done a billion times over, however I can’t help coming back to Paris and NOT taking this shot. Each time it presents new challenges and new results – hope you like it because I’ll be back to take more.
I wanted to do a photo like this last year but unfortunately I wasn't here this time last year.. but I'm glad I am this year lol!

I know I’m a little late to the party, but I finally picked up FunnyBrick’s Wally West! (Well I mean I got it in January but of course it takes time to photograph these things ya know, plus Patrons hav early access, yaddayaddayadda)
But damn, I feel like I’ve been waiting YEARS for a Kid Flash minifigure and the day has finally come! I mean hell, Christo's Flash showed up on the scene as far back as 2012! Plus with ParisCustomBricks Classic Silver Age Wally coming hot on it’s heels, that makes me a very happy photographer! Two Wally's in one year! I couldn't be happier (or more excited) :P
Wally's always been my favorite Speedster and most certainly my top five favorite DC Characters, so without a doubt in my mind I was going to get this figure! And man is this a great fig!
The Young Justice KF design has always been great and despite the fact that the other two figures here are not intentionally Young Justice templates, FunnyBricks' figure looks fantastic along side them! The shaping of the headpiece goes quite well with Christo's (and even the LBR Official Fig too!)

I wanted to try something different again with the speed effect, this time more in line with a physical Lego build! It gaves me a chance to play around with focal range! :)
The build by any standard wasn’t an original idea, but I’ve never tackled the Tim Lydy Speed-Lines before... and now I have :P

Sometimes when I'm in a store, or out on the street and some shop's playing a song I used to listen to, but don't anymore, because it belonged to one of the years that is now over, and has been replaced by newer songs and newer bands - nostalgia overwhelms. That was year 2010. That was year 2011. And that, that was from 2009. And now it's all over, and probably no one else remembers, or even if they do they only have one dusty photo stored away in their album in the shelf that no one touches. Because maybe I've done it all wrong, the whole time. Maybe what I have now is not what I'm supposed to have, and what I've lost is still supposed to be with me. Some people have gone; some people have come in; and some have never existed except as shadows that I can no longer remember. I think I've done everything all wrong..but it's too late to change anything, and what is left here except to move on?

So you all know, a few days ago I shared my recent Tales of Suspense cover, but around the time I was wrapping up the details of that project, my copy of Crystal Minifigs Robot Thor showed up!
So I swapped some parts and photographed a classic Silver Age Odinson to kinda go along with that shoot.
...Of course later they released a variant of that Robot Thor but by that point all of us here on flickr had done the conversion using that super cool headpiece anyway! :P
But regardless, I figured I could share this here, and somebody would enjoy it :)

I don't know about anyone else, but for me it's that time of year where I get super excited for Winter! I absolutely love going out in winter conditions, it's possibly my favourite time of year for photography!
Here's a shot from by far my best mountain day to date! The summit of Càrn Mòr Dearg looking towards the Arete and Ben Nevis. It was a miserable day down in Fort William and our winter skills guide had suggested going up Càrn Mòr Dearg for our mountain day as there could be a chance of getting above the cloud and he was right! I'd longed to see a cloud inversion and what better view to witness with Ben Nevis as a backdrop!
Hoping for some more amazing winter mountain days this winter :)

Wow... I... I don't know where to start....
This was a beautiful film. I can't think of any other way to say it. James Mangold has written a story that was incredibly moving and well thought out. There was a very clear direction to be taken for The Wolverine's final film, and he nailed it on the head.
This movie hit extremely close to home for me. This story of a generational gap between Father, Son, and Child is something that's not commonly addressed in everyday film or TV, even more so in the Superhero Genre.
I'm absolutely floored by how well this movie respected it's predecessors, while still maintaining a sense of individuality. LOGAN was the perfect way to finally end the X-Men saga that started with Jackman and Stewart so long ago. In a way, this whole film was comprised of many little things that interconnected and left plenty of room for story, with little to no need for unnecessary exposition. I'm really proud at how intelligent the audience was expected to be.
Something that really struck a chord with me though, was the dynamic developed among Charles, Logan, and Laura. Particularly how strong the desire Xaiver has to teach Laura about the beauties of the world, and wanting to provide a positive outlook on life, while simultaneously having a pessimistic father figure like Logan. I see myself in X23's position. In fact I see myself in all three of these characters, which is a rarity for me. I understood the confusions that X23 had about civility and manners and why things are the way things are. I felt pain and depression for Charles, just wanting what's best for the people around him because of his own past mistakes and pains. I especially felt empathy for Logan. Being the only one (barely) capable to keep the “family” together. Having a sort of weight bared down from the past wrongs in his life, while struggling to find peace.
Which inevitably he does.
Or that's how I'd like to see it.
It's strange. Because it's a sad ending... but it's a happy one too. There's a sense of accomplishment and pride, making it through this journey with him. Like... it's been seventeen years since we first met this guy (for me anyway), and we've gone though all these hardships with him, the good (X2, DOFP) and the bad (Origins, X3, etc). And Logan's finally found a belonging and purpose. He loved.... and I think he finally saw that.
Part of me is glad that it's over. Part of me is somber for what's to come and what has been.
I don't know if that was the goal for this film but that's what I walked away with.
I'm also really proud at how well this handled people struggling with PTSD, Suicide, and Mental Illness. LOGAN particularly shows us that despite our failings and our minds breaking down as we get older, there's always someone (even if it's only just one person) standing there willing to hold out a hand.
Charles burial was very moving for me. People deal with grief in many different ways, and Hugh Jackman held an incredible performance showing how a person struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder would handle a loss. They go down fighting. They're angry and scared and they don't want to admit their pain.
My own father has had episodes like this. ...I've had episodes like this.
And speaking from experience, having someone to care for you after event's like this is hard. Excepting help from people who care about you is really really hard....
And I know that even though this is just a movie, it gives me a sense of outward perspective on times like this in my own life. It's a good slap in the face like “Hey! Stop it! Your life isn't nearly as bad as Wolverine's!”
In a way, I needed a movie like this.
There's been a lot of talk about how this R rating was gonna hurt the film. I feel that the intelligence and depth at it's core needed a rating like this. I don't think this film could've held the same kind of impact that it did. You couldn't have moments like Logan's episode be as raw as they were without the cursing, so to speak.
Additionally there wasn't the need for hand-holding or overbearing narratives. You couldn't get the film you did if you constantly had to remind the audience that they're in The Future or have to show flashbacks to the Weapon X Program in the 80's. You could have a single line of dialogue for a plot point and be done with it. Anything else additionally can be used in an art form or an emotional/story derivative, which is exactly what happened! It was perfect!
Hell, the mere concept that you can create a dialogue heavy, three act, genre breaking, piece of art blows my mind!
And it was under the 20th Century Fox Banner?! Crazy! :P
I mean, what more is there to say? The cinematography was fantastic! The setting of midwestern farmlands and North Dakota forests, and the colors! Oh man what a great rustic palette!
The story was perfect for a concept like this. A bit on the nose at times, but the motivation was very clear cut and gave plenty of opportunity to expand on character. It was like reading a book, and I loved it! It wasn't some “blue light into the sky” BS, it was a real story! With real characters and real settings and just... wow! :)

Cypress trees covered in epiphytic air plants rise from the dark waters deep within a cypress dome, evoking a scene reminiscent of earth’s prehistory. While there were no dinosaurs seen, this wetland forest is still the domain of a distant relative – the American alligator. So while slogging knee-deep through the water to capture this image, one also had to keep a watchful eye for the area’s most fearsome inhabitant. Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida.
