You're playing with textures. You add some here...add some there. In your mind you had one picture. Then, it happens. You change the opacity of the layer and BAM! Change of plans! The textures take the image in a completely different direction!

So, instead of the sweet little farmhouse at twilight (my initial plan), I give you Kansas in Pennsylvania! Complete with a tornado...and who knows...maybe one of those birds is actually a lady on a bicycle!

(Textures and birds by Distressed Jewell. My iPhone texture is also in there, as well as a tornado brush from Brusheezy...)

I know I will get a ton of slack for this, but yes, I cut Rudy's head off. This might be a risky move, but I wanted the feeling he is a rocket taking off, jumping out of the frame.

i feel like flickr doesn't know me.

So, i thought i would tell you about myself.

My name is Lisa, I am sixteen years old. I am 4 feet 11 inches. I was adopted at birth to the most loving parents. I met my bother and sister a year ago. On my fifteenth birthday, i found out i had cancer. I'm all better now. My nose isn't straight. I have been in love, and i still am in love. We are no longer together, but today, i finally realized i am still happy without him. It's a wonderful feeling. I also, am never happy with what i see in the mirror.

I left a lot of things out. that's just the gist of my life. ask me questions, i'll gladly answer :)

The Simple Life?

A "road trip" for the Amish means more than taking a quick shower, racing to the dryer to pull out freshly cleaned clothes to wear and patting on some makeup before turning out the lights on your way out and turning the key to the engine - stopping briefly on your way out of town to gas up the car.

The horse has to be fed, watered, kept in shape, hooves shod, well trained and well behaved. Then you also have to do upkeep on the carriage and make sure any rotting or drying leather is repaired or replaced. Then you have to take the time to brush the horse to get off any loose dirt that can rub a sore into its withers or elsewhere when it is tacked up. You also have to know how the tack goes on and get it on securely but not too tight.

Your children are finally all fed and cleaned up and dressed - we won't even go into how long that took without electric or modern conveniences... just picture the clotheslines dotting the Amish country with handwashed clothes swaying in the breeze. You too, are finally ready to go, with your nice dress and bonnet.

That horse has to be kept steady when there is a semi truck riding too close behind or barreling down the road toward it head on. After all, you have precious cargo in that carriage... and no seat belts. No adjustable seats for you. No shocks to absorb the pavement - for you, your family or the horse.

How long does it take to drive into town when you average 5-8 mph? Try it sometime. They were at least 15 miles from the nearest small town in the direction they were headed. 2-1/2 hours in to town to do their business and pick up supplies and then 2-1/2 hours drive back home. Can you imagine how many times you might hear, "Are we there yet?"

They can't lock up the carriage when they are in town so they carry their purchases from store to store. Their horse is expected to stand patiently, while flies pester it. Then expected to get them safely back home. No cell phone to call anyone for help should they lose a wheel or the horse go lame. No, they don't just pull a car into the garage and forget it when they get home. They carefully remove the tack, brush out the horse and make sure it has plenty of hand raked hay and water for the night.... all before sitting down at their own supper.

And yet, it is a simpler life. Where you know what goes into cleaning your clothes, into the foods that you eat, how things work and how to appreciate what God gave you.

If you have a trip planned to Amish country, make sure you get up early one morning and go for a walk. When you hear the clop clop clop of the horse's hooves hitting the pavement, I hope it makes you think about the lives of the people and animals who live that way and I hope you appreciate all they have to offer.

There's nothing quite as rewarding as being among them and feeling that peace.

I know, he's got a lot to go. :P

But he's pretty good so far. Anyway I would have upload this earlier, but I got addicted to playing Arkham Knight since I just bought it recently.

Anyway I'm really enjoying playing Arkham Knight. Had to get it since I have the others and I a huge fanatic of the franchise.

So far it's very entertaining, hillarous, tragic, and I actually think this is now my favorite Arkham game. Yeah, and somehow managed to beat Arkham City as my favorite. Let me tell you, if your a Batman fan or fan of the Arkham franchise, you MUST buy this game! The replay value is great, the characters are great, and so far the plot is making me go, "Wait, WHAT!!!!". I won't say what happens, but a lot of crazy things happen.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I absolutely love snow, so when we arrived at the Columbia Ice Field on the Athabasca Glacier, I was in my element.

We had an even bigger treat in store, when we actually set foot on the ice field, mist started to roll in off the glacier and it turned to snow.... great big hunks of snowflakes started falling all around us - in the middle of June!!!

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend, and have a great start to this new one.

I know I have a few of you that I still have to catch up on, hopefully, that'll happen this week :)

Thank you everyone for the lovely comments on yesterday's Bow Lake photo :)

I have to tell you about Dave. Not my brother Dave - you know about him already if you've been reading these adventures and keeping notes. I'm referring of course to the other Dave - the one who procures a wadge of tickets for rugby internationals in exchange for spending half his spare time volunteering at his local club and tells me to stand outside my house and wait to be collected on the evening before the game. On such evenings we will head just past Plymouth to Gareth's house where we will always have a Chinese takeaway before heading to Twickenham the next morning. Dave and Gareth have been doing this in metronome like fashion since they were teenagers in 1972. Greater quantities of beer than I'm used to or are good for me are generally involved. It's a routine I always look forward to, even though I'm a lifelong football nut and only have the vaguest grasp on what's going on in between those strange H shaped posts during the big match. Somehow I've been inveigled into their gang by stealth. I feel like the slightly younger clueless looking one on "Last of the Summer Wine." Apologies if you're not from the UK or you're under 45 as that last statement isn't going to mean anything to you.

Dave likes music as well. Because he's twelve years older than me he's seen all the bands I love the most. He was there to see the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon and John Bonham before they succumbed to their excesses. Just recently he shared with me a poster from the Bath Blues and Rock festival of 1970 where he saw among others, Led Zeppelin, Santana and Pink Floyd. Gareth usually went with him to events such as this so I tend to get the stories in stereo to make me even more envious of their superior vintages. Sometimes I wish he just wouldn't tell me stuff like this. I was only 4 and my parents wouldn't have let me go anyway. Besides which I hadn't fully familiarised myself with all of their albums at that stage. I was still busy getting to grips with Bill and Ben.

Dave is a useful person to know, but at the same time I've become accustomed to knowing that his call will result in substantial amounts of open wallet surgery, in exchange for which I will be entertained. One day he told me to book a long weekend because we were off to see the Foo Fighters at the Olympic Stadium in London. Flights, accommodation, river trips and a Billy Idol concert the following night in Brixton cost me the price of a decent second hand L lens, but it was three days I won't forget in a hurry.

Two days later, with a head full of tunes and a soul full of memories from as fantastic weekend as it's possible to achieve with two men in their mid 60's, I looked outside the window as the plane came in to land at Newquay. The sky was doing beautiful things and I was stuck in the air. I sighed as I gazed at an intense orange sunset through the plate glass window.

So the following evening, Lee, Dave - my brother Dave this time - and I headed to Bedruthan and watched the sun disappear behind a bank of cloud in an unpromising sky. We looked at each other doubtfully and groaned about having missed the previous evening. But as in the song, just as you think it's all over and you're about to head for the pub, something happens in the sky and suddenly it was all worthwhile. Well those aren't the exact words to the song but, you know.....

I know I post a lot from this one spot, and I probably won't stop posting this spot ever, lol!

Ok, so everyone knows about Walrus tusks but this photo gives a view of its other teeth on both the upper and lower jaws. I don't recall ever seeing a photo of a wild Walrus where the teeth were visible. It is as if the dentist had just asked him to open wide. Walrus tusks are modified canine teeth that are possessed by both males and females. The rest of the teeth are variable in number, but usually they have about 18 including tusks, but as many as 38 have been recorded, which is more than humans (adult humans have 32). The teeth also erupt simultaneously and the root cones can expand in the growing jaw of a young Walrus, which means they have no need for extra "wisdom teeth" as they get larger. This mechanism of expanding root cones is apparently not known in any other mammal.

You can also see the muscular tongue, which is used for feeding. They seal their lips around bivalve molluscs such as clams, then rapidly withdraw their tongue like a piston, creating a vacuum strong enough to suck the contents out of the clam shells. The Walrus palate has a special vaulted structure to create this suction.

This wild Walrus was loafing in the shallows in north Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago. And one final thing; that "scar" that looks like a bullet hole behind the eye is actually its ear hole. And they have a very good sense of hearing.

Those who know me and are my online friends will know I’ve had a Flickr profile and photostream almost from the very beginning of its existence. You’ll also know that recently after Flickr took the decision to try and enforce their profit-making on my efforts that I decided to leave.

In typical style though (and after a lot of hassle getting my profile reset to ‘safe’ with Flickr) I decided to keep a small presence here, with some ‘vanilla’ samples of my photos which are really here just for those whose photos I ‘like’ to be able to see who’s liking them.

So although my active presence here on Flickr has all but ended its not all bad news. Upon deciding on a new home online I’ve recently undertaken the business of moving my main active presence to Fetlife. Not only have I fallen upon a community who are right on exactly the same wavelength as me, but also (and partly because of recent events here on Flickr) it’s encouraged me to share all of my X Rated content I never shared on here.

If anyone wants to join or find me there then please send me a message and I’ll drop you the link. If not, then the few photos you see here are kind of all you’ll get for the foreseeable… I’m done with Flickr for now 😘

I'd been wanting a sunrise shoot at Point Pelee for a couple of years and finally made the time to give it a go - it's a bit of a drive and you never know exactly what a sunrise will bring in terms of photo ops. On this morning I didn't get what I had hoped for but there is something very "Zen like" when you wait for the world to awaken.

== Dixie Corner ==

by Ron Pinkerton

If you know the name “Dixie Inn,” this may be of interest to you.

Legions of desert photographers (including me) have done their part to memorialize the shell of a tiny restaurant west of Barstow. The name Dixie Inn remains neatly stenciled on three sides.

It's a curious little block structure, isolated on a diagonal orientation to the road. It sits, perhaps, under the watchful eye of its older sibling--a ruined gas station and market fifty yards away.

I've always thought there was a story there. This is that story:

A hundred years ago, nine miles west of Barstow, the [dirt] road that ran between Barstow and Hinkley had a pair of sharp turns with a rail crossing in between.

The jog in the road formed a crossroads, and forced traffic to slow down. It was an ideal location for a service station.

E.M. Kinslow was omnipresent in Hinkley and Barstow affairs at that time: rancher, school board member, building contractor, president of the Hinkley Chamber of Commerce, and general man-about-town.

In addition, by 1929 he and his son were operating the Dixie Service Station at that corner, where they pumped gas and sold glasses of orange juice.

In July of that year, they added a grocery department to the business. For the grand opening, sugar was a nickel a pound; peanut butter, twenty cents; ice cream was free.

The dirt highway was well-groomed and freshly oiled, promising a good turnout from Barstow.

Kinslow's promotion and a great location made the Dixie Service Station and Grocery a landmark in the community. The location was known as Dixie Corner.

But Kinslow was a restless businessman, and by 1932 the property had been sold for the first of several times.

About the time of World War II, it was purchased by James and Jessie McCormick.

In 1948, they built the Dixie Inn across the road from the service station. The best press coverage the cafe ever earned was a description of a surprise party held there for the McCormicks' own son.

History notes that spaghetti was served, followed by cake and ice cream.

The Inn was not destined to be the same kind of money-maker as the service station, and by 1950, they were leasing it to Bill Radcliff and his wife, who offered a menu that featured chicken, steak, and hamburgers.

It's not clear how long the restaurant survived, but given the diminutive size of the building, even with a husband-and-wife team doing the work, it wasn't capable of providing much of a living for the operator.

The service station and grocery fared better until the mid-1960's. At that time, the highway was rerouted to eliminate the sharp turns and railroad crossing.

The Dixie Corner had been erased, and with it, the steady stream of customers for the service station. The McCormicks continued to live in the house on the property until the mid-1970's.

There, Mrs. McCormick frequently hosted dinners for the Hinkley Women's Club. History notes that spaghetti was always served. It is not known if cake and ice cream followed.

EPILOGUE

Today, the Inn still stands at its peculiar angle.

The road that once separated it from the service station has vanished entirely. The service station/grocery suffers from decades of entropy, and will likely not be with us much longer.

Sadly, little traffic passes by to notice.

Look away, Dixie Land.

... you know the rest. This tasty little gem is SOOC. I was trying out my *new* light box and sliced a 1/4" section from the middle of a spartan apple. hmmm ... should have picked a less battered one, I think I see a little contusion on the side.

[Explored # 57] - Thanks for the light box Mom!

Better late than never... heres my attempt at a Febrovery build. It tips its hat to 6842 shuttlecraft from 1981, although in this incarnation is ground based. Hope you enjoy it and please let me know what you think.

Of course, everyone knows snowmen ... and snowwomen and snowkids ... hate the sun. With very good reason of course. :-) So they have to employ a Solar Early Warning system. Today that job fell to this happy fellow. Happy because the sun is nowhere in sight ... and won't be for the foreseeable future. (That's a double stacked 70mm SolarMax III with a 15mm blocking filter he has there on a Celestron CGX-L mount)

Overnight and today we received 15-20 centimeters (6-8 inches) of snow and one of the websites I monitor predicts another 8.9 centimeters for Friday and another 8.5 centimeters for next Monday. At times like these, I definitely think I might have picked the wrong hobby.

It's been quite a while since I made a snowman. But you're never too old to have fun, I guess. Today, it just seemed appropriate somehow. In these troubling times, I hope it gives a little smile to anyone who sees it. (And I wanted to give the robins that have come back from down south a little break ... by uncovering some of the snow covered grass where I rolled the snow. I'm pretty sure they will appreciate it).

(Dedicated to the memory of one of the world's greatest singer/songwriters ... John Prine) Perhaps you've heard his song Humidity Built The Snowman.

i know... slowly crawling from under my rock after six months or so. it's a very good day to do so considering that Jen's world is celebrating her birthday. (I know I'm making a meal of this but I lead a very dull life; bear with me.)

Just after taking the last photo, from the low hedge that I'd been sheltering in I ventured forth (told you I was milking it) and saw this lot coming straight towards me, but hey-ho I set off on the now very slippery clay footpath you can just see, hoping I can get to those trees and a bit of shelter and sort of praying for no more lightning bolts. (Spoiler alerts, I made it.)

That hint of blue sky giving me some hope for the next six miles, but I saw very little of it.

The map shows the site of a Roman villa just on my right in this field.

I'll be glad when I've stopped posting these gloomy images. My flickr stream is always full of sunshiny England, I'm finding these positively depressing. But I've not walked seven miles in this lot not to use them!

Never did I wonder

Never did I really wanna know

Never did I conquer

All my fears of just being let go

Would you ever tell me

Would you ever come right out and say

That you really need me

You know I think you just might feel that way

So would you smile at all for me

And would you cry at all for me

If I said that this had happened to me?

Yeah, yeah

Never could I guess this

What about these monsters did I miss?

Where was help when I was

Stripped down and out there on my own

And would you ever tell me

Would you ever come right out and say

That this wasn't my fault

But you know I can't feel that way

So would you smile at all for me

And would you cry at all for me

If I said that this had happened to me?

Yeah, yeah

I'm running fast and I'm running wild

Hey, I'm running cold and I'm still a child

And I won't forget that I'll never know

Would you ever wonder

Would you ever really wanna know

What was it that happened

To me and why I can't be just let go

And would you ever tell me

Well, I think I'm gunna come right out and say

That this wasn't my fault

And that I know you feel this way

So would you smile at all for me

And would you cry at all for me

If I said that this had happened to me?

Yeah, yeah

So would you smile?

I feel the magic in these leaves lying on the ground, glowing under the sun lights with many colors, I hold one and look at it in honor...

don't be sad for the fallen leaves, they give all the pleasure of their colors through the year, since they are little cute buds till they're grown with a shiny green under the sun light, giving the air, giving the shadow, giving the shelter for the animals..... but don't be sad when they fall, because they will be still giving, giving the food for many kinds of creatures, even giving the energy for the earth for a new season of growth and chances to give new lives.

so it must not be called Fall, it must be called Autumn and only Autumn, because leaves don't fall, they just replace their job to another, transfer their position from the air to the ground, when all creatures are hiding and sleeping in winter, leaves find another place where they can be more useful, on the ground... and life continues...

that's only what I think anyway :)

I know where the Grey Wagtails are nesting so took a chance on looking for the chicks. Found this little one on the ground. I picked it up and put it on a small wooden structure so it was off the floor and hoped the parents would feed it. I waited a few minutes and sure enough one of the came in several times to feed it. Nice. See next photo.

Making Ordinary Extraordinary:

The Shawn Carter Foundation's exclusive fundraising event to support its college scholarship fund

North Side of Chicago. April 1. 2023.

I can not describe a person I do not know or have seen in my life.

I was sitting on a terrace in a square in San Sebastian where a group of musicians entertained the aperitif.

At the end of his performance this man appeared from I do not know where, greeting the audience with his hand between the applause of the respectable and left.

Meanwhile, I was shooting with a camera comfortably sitting in the shade without knowing who I was photographing.

It is possible that it is someone very well known in the area. I dont know. If someone can inform me, I will be very grateful.

It's a "stolen" photo and maybe I'm getting into a mess, but for me it's just one of the many photos I have in my files and that one day, it occurred to me to edit it to see if I could get something decent.

I liked the result and there it is. Nothing else.

No sé.
