I know that I'm a few days late with this one, but I wanted to make sure to congratulate the American Bison for being named as the official National Mammal of the US ... exactly 2 days ago.
It's quite an honor bestowed upon the largest mammal in North America, which weighs in at up to 2,000 pounds and stands an impressive 6 feet high (males). They are quite fast and aggressively unpredictable at times. It's not unheard of for them to go after those who invade their space and have at times made headlines for teaching those not intelligent enough to understand how to act around wild animals. Enough said about that.... =:-0
We had the opportunity to photograph them on a recent trip during the winter out to Yellowstone NP. They must withstand the harsh reality of sub-freezing temperatures and strong winds of a Yellowstone winter. They are plentiful as well within the Yellowstone Ecosystem, which is the only place in the US where bison have consistently lived since the prehistoric times. Now that's impressive, I think.
The bison is often used as a symbol of conservation in the US and who can forget the old "Oh Give Me A Home"? Of course, in that song they were called buffalo. In the US, they're pretty much referred to as either, though their real designation is that of bison. :-)
So I hope that you're as excited as I am about the official designation. Thanks for stopping by to view and especially for sharing your thoughts and comments.

I know, I know, it's a "pull-tab" not a pop top. This is from a can of Budweiser, the King of Beers (if you are to believe their advertising). This was left here by a visiting Euro beer-lover. When she's here she does enjoy US beer, like PBR and Bud. Of course, Corona and Heineken and other brands of beer are on the "acceptable to drink" list as well.
While processing this image, John Hiatt's "Riding with the King" was playing in my head. Here is a great rendition with Hiatt singing and Sonny Landreth playing lead on slide. The band is tight, the video and sound are excellent. Highly recommended. www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_CUzuitxSI

"Let's get down, let's get down to business
Give you one more night, one more night to get this
We've had a million, million nights just like this
So let's get down, let's get down to business
Mama, please don't worry 'bout me
'Cause I'm about to let my heart speak
My friends keep telling me to leave this
So let's get down, let's get down to business
Back and forth, back and forth with the bullshit
I know I said it before, I don't mean it
It's been a while since I had your attention
So it might hurt to hear this
Dreams we have don't ever fall away
We can't live 'em if we stay the same
And I can't do this for another day
So let's get down, let's get down to business." ♩♪♫♬💀🔥

Somerset Orchard. Slowly getting to know these Owls as I have been spending a few hours watching the juveniles and adults.
OK, I know this is not a great photo, but it has a story. I went to buy some hay from someone who was recommended by a friend. They live way out in the county. When I got there, I was amazed at all the old stuff they had on their farm. I was met by the 99 year old woman who's grandfather had homesteaded the land in 1843. I asked permission to take pictures. She made me promise not tell anyone where it was because she was ashamed of all that junk. Her grandson took me to a barn that was leaning badly. He told me that there would be something in there that would interest me, but don't lean aganst anything 'cause the whole thing might fall. It was very dark in there.
This is what I found.
You know summer is near when the Jacarandas are in bloom, end of year exams are under way and hayfever season is upon us. The whole of Queensland and Northern New South Wales is alive with these gorgeous purple blooms, there is purple everywhere scattering their blooms all over the ground creating a lovely mauve carpet.
I headed out to Boonah every year for the last 13 years to photograph this particular tree. I've seen it it all sorts of conditions, you can see my album titled The Boonah Tree here on my Flickr page if you are interested.

One of the most satisfying experiences I know is fully to appreciate an individual in the same way I appreciate a sunset. When I look at a sunset...I don't find myself saying, 'Soften the orange a little more on the right hand corner, and put a bit more purple along the base, and use a little more pink in the cloud color...' I don't try to control a sunset. I watch it with awe as it unfolds.

I know I break your heart
With everything I'm not
Don't ever give up on me
Remember that we're strong
And even as we fall
Don't ever give up on me
These tears I'm holdin back
Could turn my whole face black
And I don't know if you'd love me
If you saw me like that
Would you?
Would you follow if I turned my back
Could you love me through this broken glass
I know I'm not who I was or where I need to be
But don't ever give up on me
Don't ever give up on me
My heart would turn to run
But even when I'm gone
Don't ever give up on me
I'm tryin deep within
If you could hold my hand
Don't ever give up on me
This war I'm fightin havoc
It turns me inside out and
I don't know if you'd love me
If you saw me right now
Would you?
Would you follow if I turned my back
Could you love me through this broken glass
I know I'm not who I was or where I need to be
But don't ever give up on me
Don't ever give up on me
How do you?
How do you?
Still believe in me
Even when
Even when
All my colors bleed
Holdin out
Holdin out
Will you love the rest of me
Would you follow if I turned my back
Could you love me through this broken glass
I know I'm not who I was or where I need to be
But don't ever give up on me
Don't ever give up on me

I know these are all basically the same, but there wasn't much room for going overboard with the quantity I had going. Now time to relax and get to know my new house and all it's unexpected quirks =) Just one last run to make sure my family had some special cookies!
I know many photographers who insist a bird needs to be facing them. Well, for me, whether a human or bird portrait, I see no necessity in that, and I often wait out the more interesting poses!
Thanks for looking, etc.:)
I know that some think that these birds recognize me but has been almost two months since I last visited and the birds are quite skittish and the Green Herons never wanted to just settle in and forage, so I was never able to get close to them. This one was perched on a branch overhanging the bayou, but eventually just flew away. Photo captured on Horsepen Bayou.

I want to stay close
Of everything that feels right
Until the day I change my mind
My experience
My covenant with science
My knowledge is my distraction
Things I know
I guess without anybody having told me
Things I know
My alarm clock shows the wrong time
Press the play
I like my room
My messy
No one knows stir in my confusion
It's my point of view
Do not accept tourists
My World is closed to visitation
Things I know
Fear lives close to crazy ideas
Things I know
If I go I won't change clothes
It is my Law
I cut my bent
Hit my sins
No one asks after if I've paid them
I see the film into pauses
I imagine houses
Then I no longer even recall what I drew
Things I know
No longer keep calendars on my phone
Things I know
I buy devices that I don't know how to use
I already bought
Sometimes gives laziness
In quicksand
The more I move deeper into me i go
I live in a scenario
The imaginary side
I enter and leave whenever I'm affine
Things I know
The nights are clear at dawn
Things I know
Are things that before I didn't knew ...
Now I know...!

Skull!
They all know, they all know!
Sorry, did I wake your dream, some questions run too deep
We only, only wake up when we sleep
Led by the lunar light, trouble's all we'd find
Lost our way tonight
Is it something we said?
Is it something we said to them?
Is it something we said?
Save me - I'm trapped in a vile world
Save me - Where the end game's all the same as every other
We're only here to die
Save me - I'm losing my only dream
Save me - I can use some guiding light, some place to go
If you hear me, let me know
They all know, they all know!
Ever since the day you left my fates been set unknown
How many years to walk this path alone?
So much to see tonight, so why'd you close your eyes?
Why can't I shut mine?
Is it something we did?
Is it something we did to them?
Is it something we did?
Save me - I'm trapped in a vile world
Save me - Where the end game's all the same as every other
We're only here to die
Save me - I'm losing my only dream
Save me - I can use some guiding light, some place to go
If you hear me, let me know
If you hear me, let me know
Help me find my way
Said help me find my way
No pulse inside of me
Stone cold lips and heresy
All lies and to a degree
Losing you I wanna be, oh
You'll find out right now,
He may be out of his mind, but someday you will find
That sanity has left us all blind, and dragged us all behind
A moment seen through those eyes, crystal blue disguise
They say that all beauty must die, I say it just moves on
If you'd only open your mind, then someday you will find
Insanity left us behind, and walked right through the door
I can see the picture's clear as yesterday, pictures all my own
I can hear the voices begging you to stay, but know you're not alone
Save me - I'm trapped in a vile world
Save me - Where the end game's all the same as every other
We're only here to die
Save me - I'm losing my only dream
Save me - I can use some guiding light, some place to go
If you hear me, let me know
If you hear me, let me know
Tonight we all die young
Tonight we all die
Tonight we all die young...
You know it, you (may) love it, but you've seen about 100 pictures of it before from me. But I hadn't taken any waterfall picture in 2 months and High Falls downtown is the ultimate in waterfall convenience. A different viewpoint here.
"You'll knock on my door and up we'll go. In white light

Who lurks in the treetops munching on stolen treasures, nuts and pinecones? Who? The Shadow Knows.
During a resent visit to Dauset Trails Nature Center, the temperature climbed while photographing all the "things with wings" at the Children's Garden, so we decided to take a break and relax on one of the nearby shaded benches.
While sitting there, I suddenly heard a noise up in one of the trees. It was this squirrel, climbing up to this spot to pause and secretly munch away on some tasty treat he'd just found.
I took a shot even though the lighting was not the best, but I kinda like the way it turned out. This isn't a B&W, but it sure looks like one.

Know your Exits
Emerging from the dim light of the underpass, where the city's heartbeat pulses faintly against the cold concrete, everyone seems lost in their thoughts. What paths lay ahead of you? This direction is not just a way out of my place of shadows and echoes but a chance to make an existential choice. Exits in my urban chasm are not merely roads and streets; they are the decisions that define me, the moments of truth where my very being is distilled into action.
As I ponder existence and essence, I question whether freedom of choice is the most authentic expression. My choice carves a path that leads me back to the same variant of existence, and I never seem to leave. What are the invisible threads that connect my choices to a predetermined destiny?
I take a step forward with a deep breath, embracing the uncertainty that ensures my return. Lost in the labyrinthine streets, shadowed alleys, and false exits, I promise myself liberation and self-discovery as I take the next step that could redefine me.

Everyone knows Greebles don't grow on trees, they're produced by textury secretions from the Greeble Bee!
--
Had fun at BrickCan on the weekend, where I was introduced the AFOB Life. The task at hand was to make _____ Bee. So I choose the humble Greeble Bee that makes us our Greebles.
The hardest part was actually making the greebles in orange to match the yellow/orange honey comb logo from the bee keeper CMF. Orange is not a good greeble colour :P
I know some of the details aren't the best, but I really wanted to finish this figure. He's been sitting with the with my other WIPs for a couple of days now. I added a couple of details to the rifle just cause. The thing around his neck (I don't really know what it's called, XD) Id made out of fabric that I painted. That's about it, this figure is pretty simple. Thanks for looking! :)
Today is September 25, 2009.
I know what you're thinking. That is not the face of happy. Alright, I admit it. Guelph is a mess, and I and everyone else who lives downtown has had it. This is Norfolk Street, which is pretty much the major artery leading into downtown, and which has been torn to the ground for months. Now I seldom drive anywhere, so today is like every other day, and I'm trying to get to the Stone Store for some organic sugar, but even walking is difficult. At least there are bags of sand to sit on while you wait for the parade of graders to pass by.
It has become a bit of a joke now between a friend and I when we are walking downtown. "Kabul is looking MUCH better today". Or, "Why did we move to Beirut again? Gawd, what were we THINKing?" We are very, very funny.
But we don't live there. It's some construction, it's inconvenient, but it is Guelph, Ontario. Canada. This is where we live. And it's difficult to pick up my organic groceries, but this is probably the worst thing that will happen to me today, or to anyone in Guelph today.
Happiness is living in paradise. Canada, not Kandahar. And knowing when it's time to just relax and get a grip.
Rose Lake, Hocking Hills State Park (OH)
Ok, we all know that's a terrible title, but I can explain! The famous Shakespeare quote ends with "... would smell as sweet." When I was telling people I was traveling, they'd ask me where I was going. When I said I was going to Ohio, most people's faces would bunch up, or they'd say "oh... ok... well have fun". I totally get what they're coming from - when you think of Ohio, you think of crappy dirty cities right? Right. Well, think of this as an extrapolation of my quest here in Wisconsin to show everybody that the midwest has some amazing and beautiful nature. So this beautiful lake is called "Rose Lake", and if the name of the state it was in was any different, it would "smell as sweet." Get it? Get it? Aw screw it, I hate naming photos.
Anyway, my trip to Ohio was really awesome and I'm excited to show you guys more photos. I visited Hocking Hills State Park and Cuyahoga Valley National Park right around peak fall colors. Yes, Ohio has a national park. The landscape reminded me a lot of Wisconsin. Fairly flat in most places, but in other places there are beautiful canyons of soft rock carved by rivers, creating great waterfalls and cascades. As a photographer friend of mine said "every state has its spots."

I know you can use some of the older lenses will work on the new digital bodies. ( also use Canon and have older lenses for it but it doesn't quite perform like the Pentax does.) I use both brand of my cameras about equal. If I were going to do people I would take the canon.

“We’re back again after last week’s no show, Sky.” Said Bertie.
“Yes, I don’t know what went wrong last week, do you, Posh?”
“The man said something about him not being in the right state of mind to write anything. I assume that is why we didn’t have to go through this picture taking nonsense for once.” Replied Posh Bear.
“What a strange thing to say, Posh. I wonder what kind of mind he was in if it wasn’t the right one and I have to admit I never noticed any changes in the man.”
“No, me neither, Bertie. I suppose that is hoomans for you though.” Agreed Sky.
“Sky, what are you doing with that notebook and pen?” Asked Posh.
“I borrowed it from the man’s desk, I thought it might come in handy to make notes in.” Explained Sky.
“What a great idea, Sky, I wish I had seen it and thought of doing that.” Said Bertie looking enviously at the notebook and pen.
“Sky, I don’t wish to criticise for I’m sure you know what you are doing, but you can’t write.” Said Posh Bear.
“I know, Posh, but that is a good thing you see Posh, it is good, because if I could write, I wouldn’t be able to read what I had written, as I can’t read either.” Explained Sky.
“That is clever, Sky, I agree with you that there is no point writing stuff down if you can’t then read it at a later date and know what you have written.” Said Bertie scratching his head with his paw.
“Well, if you can’t write and can’t read, why do you want a notebook and pen, Sky?” Asked Posh Bear.
“Sky could draw pictures, Posh, to remind him of things and then he wouldn’t need to read or write.” Bertie offered.
“Yes, yes I suppose there is that, he could draw pictures.” Agreed Posh.
“No, I couldn’t. I can’t draw and anyway the pen is too big for me to hold in my paws. Said Sky.
“It is a very nice notebook and I do like that pen, Sky, I wish that I had seen it first. I still can’t understand why you wanted it though.” Said Posh looking confused.
“I thought you would like it, Posh. You came to my mind and I don’t know if it was my right mind or wrong mind, but you were there for sure, as soon as I saw it.”
“That is nice to know, Sky.”
“Yes, I thought there is Posh with all that honey and me with none at all. Then I thought, that is a nice notebook and pen and I think Posh would like them. In fact, I clearly remember thinking that good old Posh would be happy to hand over a fair amount of honey for a notebook and pen like this.”
“I do so agree, Sky, I would think several jars in fact so both his friend, Sky, could enjoy some nice honey and also Sky’s best friend could also have a jar or two.” Said Bertie.
Posh Bear looked at his two friends and nodded his head slowly.
“I understand your thinking there but there is a slight flaw in it though.” He said smiling.
“What is that, Posh?” They asked in unison.
“I don’t have any honey either at the moment. I finished my last jar up just before I sat down here. I think when the man is finished, it may be a good idea if you can find out when our delivery is due to arrive, Sky.”
“But Posh, there was four jars there when I looked just a little while ago.” Said Bertie looking surprised.
“Well, there was only one jar left when I went there and I had that before I came here.” Said Posh who along with Bertie was looking at Sky.
“I really couldn’t say chaps, I can’t count either…” said Sky, grinning and licking his lips.
Did you know? The red iris that gives the Red-eyed Vireo its name doesn't develop until the end of the birds' first winter. Then the brown iris the birds were born with becomes dull brick red to bright crimson in different individuals. (Cornell).
