I know that I am a bit late to the party, but here is my take of the close encounter of Mars with the Pleiades open cluster.

I would have loved to shoot this as a deepscape from a dark sky location with some nice landscape in the foreground, but first I was clouded out and when it finally cleared, I had to fly the other day and was only able to shoot from my light polluted backyard.

Sometimes, you have to take what you can, even if it means to shoot a reflection nebula under a bortle 5 sky. Hope I will have better conditions in 17 years, when this encounter will happen again.

Yes I know its not a Stag. The Stag was behind me bellowing and trying to put me off this shot. You will get to see him later. It meant I had to shoot both this and him with my 150-600 and I was pleased to be able to get as much of the tree in as I did. Btw this is a JPEG SOC.

I know a few of you had to do a double take when you saw this photo with my name under it :-) Well get ready, because you're about to get a whole new taste of the RE. No HDR??? Single exposures??? Macro??? If you look outside you might even see pigs flying.

First of all thanks to RKHawaii for telling me about a photo store that rents lenses for $10 a day. I went and rented me a 60mm nikkor micro lens over the weekend and went on a macro shooting spree... and now I'm addicted. So the next lens on my list is definitely going to be a macro. I want the 105mm macro but am not ready to spend $900 smackers on a lens yet.

Secondly thanks to Aileenie "The queen of macro bokeh shots" :-) for inspiring me to start doing some close up shots with lots of blur.

2 exposure with very minimal blending involved. It's pretty much just one exposure calibrated thru ACR. Curves, saturation, a bit of color adjustments, and an unsharp mask on just the dew drops that are in focus.

Please offer any criticism or critiques about these as I have much to learn in the world of macro. I shot for 2 days and only ended up with a handful of photos that I really like.

I know the truth is blinding,

I know the love is binding,

Like a landscape painted in the heart

Every stroke is a beat that may never be

Yet, beat it shall, and does in part

For this life entrances deeply, as far as I can see

Beyond burnishing golden sunsets

And calligraphic Norfolk reeds that Winter never forgets

This solemnised souvenir

Dropping slowly, with a level initialed

Curiously appears crisp to the tear

It's sign written like a sepulchral inscription thus discipled

And that mellow sound beyond even my wildest cares

A subtle flavour of warming tint for my wears

Single lines of vertical tendency arise

From the still Wensum tonight sleep

It's mid-November beyond, can you hear my sighs?

Through a mood of two decades plus a feeling deep

Written in relief beyond a diffuse glow I saw

You, given in flaunting tone a cherishment let me adore

With eyes a haunting this time, freedom rather than precision

Is key to a beauty faintly grooved

Nature is home to open-windowed scripts of sound and vision

As Her foresight so often proved

Need not a pen await the very right to papered landscapes -

Of imagination and quill, the ink passing through the heart of Her dreamscapes

Take me there, for I want to be with Her once more

She inscribed in stone, in me, the finest ornament

Now seen symmetrically, for my mind opened Her very door

Smooth to the touch Her greeting seduced my capital alignment

To match with Hers this very being, this entitlement

Developing my illumination to a solid stem of contentment

Eyes close for the invisible creep and twine of every finger

Upon the soft, silent surface of hitherto unscripted reflection

Now She the border for me the engraver where our design shall linger

Upon the thread of Autumn to sew in the hearts of many a very great resurrection

so know I must reveal 16 random things about me. 16?! Really?!?! I feel very self-centered... but I'll pull some outta my ass...

1. I drink too much. I love wine, beer and liqueur (don't shy away from any). I have one drink almost everyday. It's my way to unwind after the kids are in bed. And when I don't have kids... yikes.

2. I consider myself a "Jack of all trades, master of none." When I put my mind to it, I can do pretty much anything. I can rewire an entertainment system, build a computer, sew an outfit, cave dive, cook a gourmet meal, do the east coast swing, catch a large mouth bass... but I don't think I'm really great at any.

3. I have not befriended a women because I was attracted to her. Just as I would a man if I were attracted to him or vice versa. Like the saying goes, "If you play with fire, you're gonna get burnt." That's all I'll say about that.

4. I don't pamper myself. I go months without a hair cut. I don't get manicures or pedicures. I've never had a facial or spa treatment. I don't spend the money or time on myself. I just take care of myself... at home.

5. I love, love, love popcorn. I used to eat an entire bag every day after school. I limit the carbs today, but I will not watch a movie unless I have a bowl of buttery, salty popcorn on my lap.

6. Every time I go on vacation (even for just a weekend) I create a folder. I have to research on the area and have a game plan. I like to know where to go, how to get there and as much information about the place as possible. Anal... I know.

7. I won a Kareoke award a few years ago. It happened to be a song I knew by heart and sing in the shower all the time... so lots of practice. The drinks I had prior helped me to belt it out too. Good times.

8. My parents were very religious when I was young so we were at church often. I used to "speak in tongues", dance and sing my heart out every Sunday.

9. I have notebooks filled with poems, stories and just mind emptying writings. I keep them hidden.

10. There is not one food that I don't like. I love to try new foods and just haven't found one that I don't like. Snails, frog legs, gator tail, oysters... yummy.

11. I am very energetic, rarely serious and always looking for a laugh. I don't like wining, complaining or negativity. I believe life is what you make it. If you speak bad... well then, it's bad. Mind over matter... you can make yourself happy. =)

12. I used to have horrible menstrual cycles (sorry guys). I mean... in bed the first day, throwing up from the pain, shaking... worse than anyone I've known or even heard about. Now I'm on Mirena and haven't had a period in 14 months! Awesome!

13. I used to live in a small trailer in South Carolina out in the middle of nowhere. There were rats and opossums and other horrors all around. Luckily, it was only for about a year.

14. I smashed my middle finger in the door of a '65 Mustang when I was little. The nail came off and eventually I grew another, but it's bigger than the other one. There went my hand modeling career.

15. I am very sarcastic, a smart-ass and critical (in a joking way). I am never mean or hurtful to anyone... purposely.

16. I don't cry. When my girlfriends and I see a sappy movie and they start to cry... I feel bad and awkward. Sometimes I even laugh. I am emotional but not expressive.

Anyone that knows me or follows my photostream will know that I have a strange fascination with scooters. Especially when they're old and Italian (some kind of Quadrophenia/"I'm slightly obsessed with mid-sixties and late-seventies mod bands"-inspired fantasy, I guess). But I'll take 'em pretty much any way I can find them... even though chances of my owning one are actually slim to none. So, finding the Scooter Hive with Chun was kind of like striking gold. Damn... this shop is super cool! Filled with all kinds of awesome Vespas and Lambrettas... it's almost like heaven. If you're into scooters, of course! I definitely need to go back, if not for more photos, then to pick up one of these awesome clocks for my office! Railway Avenue, Vancouver. September 25, 2010.

The snowshoe shack - may you always know how to warm them.

My Friend when I think of you.

I think of all that we've been through.

All the times we argue and fight,

I know deep inside that it isn't right.

I, then feel bad and alot of pain.

It feels like I've fallen from the sky like the rain.

I love you dear friend with all of my heart.

But now that you're gone I've fallen apart.

I'm getting better as the days go by.

I wish sometimes this was all a big lie.

I pray to you every night.

It's like you're my fire, a burning light.

My dear friend, I miss you alot.

I still wonder why you were put in that spot.

I know you're in a place much better than here.

Watching and helping me with all of my fear.

Our friendship my dear friend,

we will have to the end.

Friends til the end is what we will be.

Someday we'll be together,

together you and me.

One joy of wandering through the countryside is that you never know what unusual sights you might run across. Here among giant pines sits a relic from the past, now relegated to rust out of sight, its owners long deceased.

Unryu paper is also known as mulberry paper. Unryu is lightweight and translucent enough for light to shine through it highlighting the fibers that are embued in it. I fell back on the two origami creatures I know how to fold to highlight the fibers.

Our Daily Challenge - Jan 2, 2020: "The Roaring 20's"

I was thinking Gangster... maybe Speakeasy... but ultimately lacked the props to pull it off on short notice.

This is the usual black Fedora decorated with some white bias tape, as I couldn't figure out how to make satin ribbon lay flat (tips? anyone?)

The Bottle is real (originally held ginger ale) but the Old Fashioned "Glass" is plastic (safer).

I also shot a version just like it plus a white Boa - perhaps our Gangster was drinking over a woman? But it looked cluttered, and being white was too bright to fit with "Dark" (below).

As for Toby, we practiced "Hats" several times today and by the time of his shoot he accepted the hat without complaint.

Alas, he's very stiff, lays awkwardly and is hard to reposition as he pops up every time I try to adjust anything.

I think we need to have some Posing Practice along with Hat Practice!

He's smart - he'll eventually figure out that popping up only delays getting to the GOOD cookies at the end.

Nobody knows who first said "Nice weather for ducks" but it supposedly arises from hunting conversations: ducks can't hear hunters creeping up on them due to the sound of raindrops falling all around...nowadays it's a sour cliche we Brits utter when it's raining on us...something like that.

I thinks these are mallards and he is a drake and she a hen.

I know I have been absent from flickr for long time but I m back and here to stay..lol Just had an amazing trip to northern areas of Pakistan took lot of pictures and will be sharing in due course. Lake Saiful Muluk located at the northern end of the Kaghan Valley near Naran. It is in the north east of Mansehra District in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan. At an altitude of 3,224 m (10,578 feet) above sea level it is amongst one of the highest lakes in Pakistan.

The weather here is moderate during day time while the temperature drops to minus degrees at night.

She's got me spotted and some other photographers around me...keeping our distance of course. This Grizzly mom's first concern is to protect her young.

We all know what the ‘bad and sad’ news is each day, we are bombarded with it?

All too aware of it.

Why would I want to repeat-share this?

I prefer to sprinkle some beauty, goodness, kindness and joy, we all need it.

Gerbera is a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family.

It was named in honour of the German naturalist Traugott Gerber.

It has approximately 30 species in the wild, extending to South America, Africa and tropical Asia.

Colours include white, yellow, orange, red, and pink.

Hope this brings a bit of joy again rather than Angst which I see in so many images and news, have a good day and thanks for your visit, so very much appreciated, Magda, (*_*)

I've never felt comfortable showing myself off...I really don't have a good body image of myself. I don't know why I'm posting these, other than to try to ease this image....accept who I am, and go forward with my life.

I know this is pretty dark but it also shows Maddison's mood! I took this the other evening when I looked out and caught Maddison rounding the corner. She seems to have heard something behind her. It was almost creepy how blue it was just before the light dissappeared. She seemed to be in a sad mood and needed some alone time away from her sisters.

I thought I had my camera on the wrong setting again lol!! It was really kind of creepy out there it was so blue, but I thought I wouldn't be able to get it, then I thought oh it must be on the wrong setting but it wasn't it actually showed up in the photo!

I know this is a poor quality phone pic, but the duck's pose was so cute!

And God knows I tried

and suddenly you know ... it's time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings ~ Meister Eckhart

for this weeks flickr friday theme: suddenly

You know when you're in for it when after a six hour drive arriving at Glen Brittle in Skye for a weekend on the ridge, your young nephew dons his fell shoes for an evening run two hours before before evening dusk and promptly runs up and down Sgurr Alistair (highest one you can see) via the great stone shute (the scree shute than comes out of the bottom left down from the highest one you can see) getting back two and a quarter hours later ..not out of breath and able to hold a pleasant conversation ..on something I'd spend the day over!! ,,,, I'm really too old to fall for it .. but I did!

I know this is a large set to post at once, but I've spent quite a lot of time shooting and identifying each camera. I started collecting these back in the 70's - mostly from garage sales and such. My wife recently found a box of these that I thought had been lost. That is the main reason I wanted to catalog these. A few came from my family. Two still had film in them! I will be getting one of the rolls processing to see what shows up.

As some of you may know, I've been on a mission this summer to get a great sunrise reflection shot from Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. And while I'm not proud of how many failed attempts are behind this morning's wonderful sunrise (and I intentionally didn't keep count), I am pretty sure I ran up to Bear Lake in an attempt for this shot 17 times in the past 6 months. Keep in mind I live 1 hour and 50 minutes away. All this makes the final shot and the fact that mother nature FINALLY cooperated - that much more rewarding. I don't think I would have even taken on this challenge if I'd known how long it would take, but looking back on it, I'm also glad I didn't give up.

In all my failed attempts, I had a chance to think about all the reasons I wasn't happy and insisted on going back again and again and again. So in fun, here are the top 10 reasons I claimed I had to go back:

10. No clouds

9. Too many clouds

8. No clouds over Longs Peak

7. Raining

6. Amazing clouds, but they never lit up

5. Wicked windy

4. Snowing

3. Clouds to the east blocked the early morning sun

2. A couple of people beat me to my spot and blocked both spots I'd scouted

1. The darn lake was still frozen!

In the end, I caved on one of the things I was hoping for in my dream shot. I'd originally hoped for a super calm morning where I could get a detailed reflection of Longs Peak and the glowing clouds. And while I suppose that may be possible someday, I found few calm mornings and besides cool clouds don't tend to hang around on the calm mornings. So with a Neutral Density filter in-hand, I decided I'd smooth out the ripples and go for the glowing color instead of reflected details. This approach seemed to help open the door to finding the more interesting weather.

Two aristocratic lovers who did sleep next to each other just after waking up. Nonsense, I know, but the lionesse reminds me so much on my kitty Lolita.. :-D

I know this is a 180 turn from what I've been posting lately. I find that making myself look creepy is way more fun than taking a nice, normal portrait of myself. I think I would love working in a haunted house during Halloween (if I could keep myself from laughing).

I like how it turned out especially since I had no idea where this photo was going while I was taking it. Kind of a combination of the posters from Psycho and The Human Centipede, which I do NOT recommend watching unless you just love horrible acting and a gross-out plot.

Anyway, a little over a year ago I posted a shower curtain photo, so I kind of revisited that concept. And thank goodness my photography and editing skills have improved some since then.

EDIT: MY FIRST EXPLORED PHOTO EVER!

Couldn't sleep last night now I know why my Grandma passed away. She was ready and went peacefully in her sleep, still doesn't numb the sadness i feel, especially for my mom. It is never easy to see a loved one go no matter how old. Title named after my Grandma's favourite song. I still remember her singing it while she was milking cows and she sang it on her last birthday as well.

Lyrics

🎵The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping

I dreamed I held you in my arms

But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken

And I hung my head and I cried

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine

You make me happy when skies are grey

You'll never know, dear, how much I love you

Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy

If you will only say the same

But if you leave me to love another

You'll regret it all some day

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine

You make me happy when skies are grey

You'll never know, dear, how much I love you

Please don't take my sunshine away

You told…🎵

This is fan made music video I have been working on for quite some time on and off due to school. I wanted to know what my graphic design peeps thought about this, so I decided to upload a preview of it. The storyline behind the video is showing relationships fall in their own special ways. "Bleed Out", a song by Jason Derulo off of his amazing album Future History, is such an emotional song IMO, and I really wanted to capture the song in video. In this preview, you will see just small snippets of what the full video will be. I hope you like it and please give me any critiques you may have or just tell me what you think about it. This is just uploaded to my Flickr only, as I want to keep the happenings of this video away from YouTube at the moment. :P Plus I want to show my graphic design community another passion of mine, which is video editing! :D I really can't wait to hear what you all think of it!

You know that moment in life when you stop whatever you’re doing and you suddenly appreciate something more than ever before, because it simply works? This is the girl I spent the past fifteen days with and it’s the first thing that’s just been so easy in a long time. We went back to France, where we first met, together, saw people we were close to, went to places we used to spend time in, and it was lovely grasping a hint of all those feelings we left behind last year. Lisa is a part of my time in France I’m sure I will never lose, and I am incredibly thankful that I can share all those memories with her. We live almost seven hours apart here in Germany, but it’s never really mattered during the past year. When we got to meet again things were just like when we saw each other every day back in France, and I think it’s things like that that make you realize that you’ve found a very special person you should keep in your life.

Know as the “Wisconsin Desert”, this preserve harbors some of Wisconsin’ rarest plants along with lizards, prickly pear cacti, and lots of sand.

“Frodo: I can't do this, Sam.

Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.

Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?

Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.”― J.R.R. Tolkien

Wanna know how to say peace in 100 different languages?

For TOTW My secret life....

If you wanna check out our hard work....

In my secret life I am surely a hippie. I freaking wish I could have went to woodstock. Plus I think hippie clothes are pretty far out!!!

Sooooo me and the mini lutman wrote the word peace on me in 100 different languages. I got these markers that "claim" they are super washable, I sure hope that is something that they are not exaggerating about, or I am screwed.

It sure does not look like 100 words, but it is, swear!

Well I am off to shower to see if I can get this all off of me, and then I am off to dinner, well maybe. If I am all markered up, I guess I will order takeout!

Happy weekend!!!!

Edit**** For being a "washable" marker, it is very hard to get off. The blue ones were a pain, I had to use lava soap to get it off, now I smell like my grandpa!!!!

I know it is a little early for Valentines Day, but I wont have time before Tuesday to try this. My idea didn't go exactly as planned. I had intended to take this outside, but it has been snowing all day and Pyper was very uncooperative about sitting in the snow. I moved the shoot inside, but still didn't get what I wanted. I really need to work on my 'studio shooting with a flash' skills.

Little did I know when I first set eyes on this wildflower that it would take over a decade to identify it. When I took the photo, I thought, "This will be easy. There are fewer flowers, especially blue or violet with four petals." Wrong! There are fewer, but it turns out there are 400,000 flowering species and "only" 230,000 have been described. I found this flower at the based of a trail on Mt. Diablo leading to Castle Rock Park.

Today, in one final gasp, I spent more than two hours going through my four books on wildflowers of the west (and Sierras and Central California), and came up with ... oh, what's that scientific term... ah, ZILCH! Nada, Nil. My life may be frustrating, but it's rarely dull.

I bit the bullet. I don't like to impose on a good acquaintance (less than a friend, but through an interest in nature, we have corresponded often), John Muir Laws by name. Jack holds the Nature Stewardship through Science, Education, and Art at the SF Academy of Sciences. More important, he's a naturalist, has written several books on wildlife of the Sierras etc., and teaches the art of painting wildlife. And so, as I do about once a year, I emailed him. Having explained that the closest I could come for this flower, was the Clarkia Elegance (see below) which is endemic to my mountain. His response: "I totally understand the confusion. It looks a lot like a Clarkia. Check out the purple version of Wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum)."

And so Flickrites, this is the Wild Radish of the Mustard family!

I wear this and other vintage fedoras from my collection I acquired mostly from eBay, thrift stores, etc., to Sunday morning Tridentine (Latin) Mass. I have to go to the 0630 (it's a Low Mass, and also very cold in the church) so I can make it to curling :)

My wife Alicia is the one that suggested going into the kitchen to get these shots - then didn't like them because of the lighting. The lighting is precisely why *I do* like these. Gives it a film noirish-feel.
