I know that I am a bit late to the party, but here is my take of the close encounter of Mars with the Pleiades open cluster.
I would have loved to shoot this as a deepscape from a dark sky location with some nice landscape in the foreground, but first I was clouded out and when it finally cleared, I had to fly the other day and was only able to shoot from my light polluted backyard.
Sometimes, you have to take what you can, even if it means to shoot a reflection nebula under a bortle 5 sky. Hope I will have better conditions in 17 years, when this encounter will happen again.

I know a few of you had to do a double take when you saw this photo with my name under it :-) Well get ready, because you're about to get a whole new taste of the RE. No HDR??? Single exposures??? Macro??? If you look outside you might even see pigs flying.
First of all thanks to RKHawaii for telling me about a photo store that rents lenses for $10 a day. I went and rented me a 60mm nikkor micro lens over the weekend and went on a macro shooting spree... and now I'm addicted. So the next lens on my list is definitely going to be a macro. I want the 105mm macro but am not ready to spend $900 smackers on a lens yet.
Secondly thanks to Aileenie "The queen of macro bokeh shots" :-) for inspiring me to start doing some close up shots with lots of blur.
2 exposure with very minimal blending involved. It's pretty much just one exposure calibrated thru ACR. Curves, saturation, a bit of color adjustments, and an unsharp mask on just the dew drops that are in focus.
Please offer any criticism or critiques about these as I have much to learn in the world of macro. I shot for 2 days and only ended up with a handful of photos that I really like.
I know the truth is blinding,
I know the love is binding,
Like a landscape painted in the heart
Every stroke is a beat that may never be
Yet, beat it shall, and does in part
For this life entrances deeply, as far as I can see
Beyond burnishing golden sunsets
And calligraphic Norfolk reeds that Winter never forgets
This solemnised souvenir
Dropping slowly, with a level initialed
Curiously appears crisp to the tear
It's sign written like a sepulchral inscription thus discipled
And that mellow sound beyond even my wildest cares
A subtle flavour of warming tint for my wears
Single lines of vertical tendency arise
From the still Wensum tonight sleep
It's mid-November beyond, can you hear my sighs?
Through a mood of two decades plus a feeling deep
Written in relief beyond a diffuse glow I saw
You, given in flaunting tone a cherishment let me adore
With eyes a haunting this time, freedom rather than precision
Is key to a beauty faintly grooved
Nature is home to open-windowed scripts of sound and vision
As Her foresight so often proved
Need not a pen await the very right to papered landscapes -
Of imagination and quill, the ink passing through the heart of Her dreamscapes
Take me there, for I want to be with Her once more
She inscribed in stone, in me, the finest ornament
Now seen symmetrically, for my mind opened Her very door
Smooth to the touch Her greeting seduced my capital alignment
To match with Hers this very being, this entitlement
Developing my illumination to a solid stem of contentment
Eyes close for the invisible creep and twine of every finger
Upon the soft, silent surface of hitherto unscripted reflection
Now She the border for me the engraver where our design shall linger
Upon the thread of Autumn to sew in the hearts of many a very great resurrection

so know I must reveal 16 random things about me. 16?! Really?!?! I feel very self-centered... but I'll pull some outta my ass...
1. I drink too much. I love wine, beer and liqueur (don't shy away from any). I have one drink almost everyday. It's my way to unwind after the kids are in bed. And when I don't have kids... yikes.
2. I consider myself a "Jack of all trades, master of none." When I put my mind to it, I can do pretty much anything. I can rewire an entertainment system, build a computer, sew an outfit, cave dive, cook a gourmet meal, do the east coast swing, catch a large mouth bass... but I don't think I'm really great at any.
3. I have not befriended a women because I was attracted to her. Just as I would a man if I were attracted to him or vice versa. Like the saying goes, "If you play with fire, you're gonna get burnt." That's all I'll say about that.
4. I don't pamper myself. I go months without a hair cut. I don't get manicures or pedicures. I've never had a facial or spa treatment. I don't spend the money or time on myself. I just take care of myself... at home.
5. I love, love, love popcorn. I used to eat an entire bag every day after school. I limit the carbs today, but I will not watch a movie unless I have a bowl of buttery, salty popcorn on my lap.
6. Every time I go on vacation (even for just a weekend) I create a folder. I have to research on the area and have a game plan. I like to know where to go, how to get there and as much information about the place as possible. Anal... I know.
7. I won a Kareoke award a few years ago. It happened to be a song I knew by heart and sing in the shower all the time... so lots of practice. The drinks I had prior helped me to belt it out too. Good times.
8. My parents were very religious when I was young so we were at church often. I used to "speak in tongues", dance and sing my heart out every Sunday.
9. I have notebooks filled with poems, stories and just mind emptying writings. I keep them hidden.
10. There is not one food that I don't like. I love to try new foods and just haven't found one that I don't like. Snails, frog legs, gator tail, oysters... yummy.
11. I am very energetic, rarely serious and always looking for a laugh. I don't like wining, complaining or negativity. I believe life is what you make it. If you speak bad... well then, it's bad. Mind over matter... you can make yourself happy. =)
12. I used to have horrible menstrual cycles (sorry guys). I mean... in bed the first day, throwing up from the pain, shaking... worse than anyone I've known or even heard about. Now I'm on Mirena and haven't had a period in 14 months! Awesome!
13. I used to live in a small trailer in South Carolina out in the middle of nowhere. There were rats and opossums and other horrors all around. Luckily, it was only for about a year.
14. I smashed my middle finger in the door of a '65 Mustang when I was little. The nail came off and eventually I grew another, but it's bigger than the other one. There went my hand modeling career.
15. I am very sarcastic, a smart-ass and critical (in a joking way). I am never mean or hurtful to anyone... purposely.
16. I don't cry. When my girlfriends and I see a sappy movie and they start to cry... I feel bad and awkward. Sometimes I even laugh. I am emotional but not expressive.
Unryu paper is also known as mulberry paper. Unryu is lightweight and translucent enough for light to shine through it highlighting the fibers that are embued in it. I fell back on the two origami creatures I know how to fold to highlight the fibers.

you know you should never take photos on a windy day? well I ignored that rule yesterday, the backlight through the pussy willows was too good to resist!
Mimes cover themselves with metallic paint and pose like statues on streetcorners. Crossdressers are so convincing that Olympic committees work with doctors and labs, just to figure it out. Filmmakers and photographers manipulate reality everyday with computers, and call it "special effects." We've learned that we can no longer trust what our eyes tell us. Perhaps that's why this 3-year-old in the local park had to check for herself--to determine if the bronze people on the bench were real or merely "art".
Of course, the word "art" comes from "artifice"--meaning trickery; guile; craftiness. And it isn't only visual--as "Nowhere Man" once said, "if I spoke plain, you'd soon find out, I don't know what I talk about" (good words to remember as the political season comes upon us).
...have fascinated me and I am deeply impressed every time I see them somewhere in the forests of Switzerland. I know this picture is not very new anymore but I recently got some input or an idea from someone who shared his beautiful photo from a jay with us here on Flickr. I had completely forgotten that I have various pictures of jays myself, but never published them on my photostream here. This happens to me very often because I spend most of my time in the wild nature and can then take photos of various animals. The time spent out there is the most important thing for me and the wonderful moments of being able to experience it up close and in the middle of the wild. Selecting the many photos later on is always a lot of work for me and I shy away from it whenever possible. In this way, many of my photos stay on the memory card for a long time before I copy them to my computer. A lot of things are forgotten and I only discover the pictures when I really find the time or when I get a thought-provoking idea from someone like now. In this sense, I would like to thank Mike for recently publishing one of his photos of jays. www.flickr.com/photos/191055893@N07/
This was a good opportunity to check myself again to see if I have anything useful about jays - this beautiful and clever bird of the forest.
As you can see, I found what I was looking for, but I had a lot of trouble choosing one photo from the many that I have. On top of that, I have a lot of trouble choosing one of my usually many photos. I really hope that I have chosen the right one for you and that it is beautiful enough to enjoy?
Well, the story behind this photo might also be informative for you. Actually, I was out and about in the forests of Switzerland and my surroundings again, primarily to photograph squirrels, because I now knew very well where you could find them and at what time. But things usually turn out differently than you think and, as is so often the case out there in nature, you experience small or large surprises. Anyway, I saw squirrels and was able to photograph some very nicely, but the real star of the day was definitely the jay. Why? To my great surprise and even greater joy, the jay passed by several times where I was photographing the squirrels, or at least trying to haha..
This jay sat on a branch not very far from me and maybe watched me doing something strange. At least that's how it seemed to me and it didn't fly away straight away but stayed in the tree for a while before moving on. As if that wasn't enough, he kept coming back to me and the whole game started again. I was simply fascinated by this magnificent bird with its beautiful blue feathers on its side. What more could you expect from a day in the wild than such an amazing spectacle that you can then capture with your camera. There was just one thing that annoyed me a little: my wrong settings on my camera. I was probably a bit nervous and set the exposure time much too short because I now had a camera with image stabilization. In that sense, I could have halved the time and the ISO values would not have been so high. I can't change it now and I'm very happy despite everything because the really nice thing about it all was the great experience with the clever jay, which made me lose track of time that day.
The wonders of creation are so diverse that this beauty will never end. Creation is here. It is in you right now, it has always been. The world is a wonder. The world is magic. The world is love. And it is here, now.

I know I have been absent from flickr for long time but I m back and here to stay..lol Just had an amazing trip to northern areas of Pakistan took lot of pictures and will be sharing in due course. Lake Saiful Muluk located at the northern end of the Kaghan Valley near Naran. It is in the north east of Mansehra District in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan. At an altitude of 3,224 m (10,578 feet) above sea level it is amongst one of the highest lakes in Pakistan.
The weather here is moderate during day time while the temperature drops to minus degrees at night.

and suddenly you know ... it's time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings ~ Meister Eckhart
for this weeks flickr friday theme: suddenly
You know when you're in for it when after a six hour drive arriving at Glen Brittle in Skye for a weekend on the ridge, your young nephew dons his fell shoes for an evening run two hours before before evening dusk and promptly runs up and down Sgurr Alistair (highest one you can see) via the great stone shute (the scree shute than comes out of the bottom left down from the highest one you can see) getting back two and a quarter hours later ..not out of breath and able to hold a pleasant conversation ..on something I'd spend the day over!! ,,,, I'm really too old to fall for it .. but I did!
Well as you know from my previous photo, GP and I headed over on the Wolfe Islander III to Wolfe Island from Kingston Ontario. We love to go over, sit on the patio and enjoy the sunset while having an ale and a bite.
These leaves actually make up the covered roof on the patio of the Island Grill. The sun was setting and the leaves made an excellent frame for a photo op to see the sunset over Lake Ontario.
The sky really was this gorgeous orange colour, the photo hasn't been retouched in anyway. The previous photo was only cropped. Straight from the little S5 IS to my computer and for you to see.
I highly recommend that if you ever get to Kingston, Ontario, Canada take the time to grab the ferry (the Wolfe Islander III) at the bottom of Barrack Street just off of Ontario Street. The ride is free and you just might get to discover part of Ontario that you haven't yet seen!
Have a super day, afternoon, evening or night where ever you are in the world. After all we are all only as far away from each other here as from our chair to our monitor.
Thanks for stopping by and I hope you all know that I appreciate your comments, however, awards and invites are not necessary.

As some of you may know, I've been on a mission this summer to get a great sunrise reflection shot from Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. And while I'm not proud of how many failed attempts are behind this morning's wonderful sunrise (and I intentionally didn't keep count), I am pretty sure I ran up to Bear Lake in an attempt for this shot 17 times in the past 6 months. Keep in mind I live 1 hour and 50 minutes away. All this makes the final shot and the fact that mother nature FINALLY cooperated - that much more rewarding. I don't think I would have even taken on this challenge if I'd known how long it would take, but looking back on it, I'm also glad I didn't give up.
In all my failed attempts, I had a chance to think about all the reasons I wasn't happy and insisted on going back again and again and again. So in fun, here are the top 10 reasons I claimed I had to go back:
10. No clouds
9. Too many clouds
8. No clouds over Longs Peak
7. Raining
6. Amazing clouds, but they never lit up
5. Wicked windy
4. Snowing
3. Clouds to the east blocked the early morning sun
2. A couple of people beat me to my spot and blocked both spots I'd scouted
1. The darn lake was still frozen!
In the end, I caved on one of the things I was hoping for in my dream shot. I'd originally hoped for a super calm morning where I could get a detailed reflection of Longs Peak and the glowing clouds. And while I suppose that may be possible someday, I found few calm mornings and besides cool clouds don't tend to hang around on the calm mornings. So with a Neutral Density filter in-hand, I decided I'd smooth out the ripples and go for the glowing color instead of reflected details. This approach seemed to help open the door to finding the more interesting weather.
I know, this has been captured so many times... The farmer even decided to put fences around the area, but hey he thought about us cause we photographers got a special podium! I think next time they will charge everybody to get on the podium ;)

I know, I know. More dried tulips. But these are from a different bouquet and I love how the petals look like wings or pale pink scarves fluttering in the wind. I debated keeping the text from the texture, but I thought just a hint of it was OK. This was shot using that wonderful light now pouring into our living room.

Most of the focus is spent on the mother and her newborn baby because it was her who gave birth, nursed the baby, etc. But the father also has a very strong, yet different connection to their child.
I remember a moment like this with my own child; just being able to touch, feel and experience his breath on me and just being so proud. A wave of thoughts of teaching him to ride a bike, going hiking, telling stories at night, the adventures of parenthood, seeing him graduate, seeing him off to preschool, college… all in this very instant of holding him close to me. You realize that everything you’ve made of yourself, all of your possessions, all of your accomplishments… none of that is as important as this. Suddenly you feel a huge sense of responsibility and obligation to teach this child everything you know, to protect him and to see he has the best life possible in front of him.
I don’t know what Eddie was thinking here with his 9-day old son Enrique, but his subtle expression helped me realize that being a parent isn’t just a responsibility, it’s a privilege. And I thank God every time I get to see my kids and play with them, discipline them, and even wasting time with them is time well spent.
Yes, I know it's spelled "crustacean", but it's not every day that you run across a crawdad on a station platform. This poor guy had a hell of a morning, he was air dropped here by a bird! As you can imagine, he wasn't very happy!

Lynn the Wildlife Rehabilitator returned Mama Cherry to her family today at precisely 8:56AM EST. Lynn had picked Cherry up at 4AM from the Sanctuary (Save Our Seabirds). She was so kind to call me when she arrived, and she stayed a short distance from our property until we had confirmed the location of the family. She and I hung up, and 10 seconds later Classic, Fanta and Fresca were outside my office window.
When Lynn arrived with Cherry, the rest of the family had circled around another building. Lynn carried Cherry out; Cherry saw Fanta and started to wriggle. Lynn let Cherry go, and she went straight to Fanta. Fanta has been falling behind since Cherry has been gone. Classic and Fresca had already moved up the sidewalk, but they definitely saw Cherry and started making their way back. The family reunited against the mundane backdrop of office windows, but for me, it was one of the most beautiful scenes I have witnessed.
Lynn was surprised there wasn’t any trumpeting between Classic and Cherry, but I was closer to them and I could hear them purring and cooing and the chicks were peeping. They walked off together and then Cherry moved off to the pond when they got to the corner of the building. Classic, ever the good father, continued the daily foraging round without her as she got a drink and started to get used to her blessed freedom again. I told Lynn, she probably wanted to blow the stink off of her, the smell of humans and other birds at the sanctuary. Not that those stink…it’s an expression, you know. She wanted to freshen up! =o)
Later in the day, Classic and the chicks joined her at the pond for more foraging. I sat on the hill, and I just watched them. Of course I took some shots, but I also just enjoyed the splendor of seeing my family, our family, together again. I felt myself exhale, and while I will keep a close eye on Cherry and the family in the coming weeks, I feel better knowing they are together.
Thank you God for the blessing of Lynn and the good people at Save Our Searbirds who removed the paperclip from Cherry’s beak, gave her antibiotics, and cared for her. Lynn is some sweet lady, and she is incredibly dedicated and passionate. She often gets 6 rescue calls a day, most of them Sandhill Crane related. She showed me a lot of pictures. All of them made my heart ache, and some of them were incredible success stories. Lynn’s eye lit up, sharing the joy of those who were successfully released back into the wild, and I could see her heart ache when she spoke of those she euthanized and held as they passed away. “I wouldn’t want to be alone when I die; so I don’t let them be alone.”
I am going to go to the Sanctuary in a week and a half. I know a lot of what I may see there will be heart wrenching, but if I can help and raise awareness, that would be a great gift. Thank you my Flickr Friends for all of your prayers and good wishes. I met so many awesome and simpatico contacts because of this story. In case I haven’t mentioned lately, I HAVE THE BEST CONTACTS ON FLICKR. I hope you will check them out! You will find many nature lovers, bird nerds, macro-tastic bug lovers, tree-huggers, funny, talented, engaged and artistic people!
These are not necessarily shots of epic quality. Sometimes it is what it is with wildlife, and I was definitely respecting their space even more than usual, but the feelings were epic for me. Excerpt from rom.on.ca:
NARRATOR: The Winnie-the-Pooh books demonstrate a wonderful interplay between image and text. Milne and Shepard worked closely together, sending drafts back and forth – and forth and back! The final result? Milne’s words and Shepard’s drawings made the stories jump from the page.
NARRATOR: In this drawing, Shepard shows Pooh sitting on a stone in the middle of a stream. Mr. Milne, indulge us with your related text.
MILNE: “The sun was so delightfully warm, and the stone, which had been sitting in it for a long time, was so warm, too that Pooh had almost decided to go on being Pooh in the middle of the stream for the rest of the morning, when he remembered Rabbit.”
NARRATOR: Now, look at Shepard’s drawing – a happy Pooh, basking in the sun, content to do nothing. Image and word work together to conjure a scene...you know, this is turning into a proper tour.
Ok, so I know I post some of the same things. Like these dead leafy things. I enjoy taking them, but I like to experiment with there is not place I feel like going. I just had to post because in the sun light they turned out to look outstanding even though I take these like 100 times. lol Hope it's not a problem.

I know, this is a scene that's been photographed with every known camera a gazillion times. But I still wanted to come here because it's been at least 2+ years since I've set foot in this very, very small view area that gets very, very crowded most days because of it's beauty and popularity. On this morning, I was the only person there. Perhaps this was because it was 7:16 a.m. I didn't even think there would be much of a sunrise due to the haze, so it was a bonus that I could see a patch of sunlight hitting Mount Rainier.
I've been at this spot in autumn, when it was raining and The Mountain was totally hidden behind fog and clouds. I've been here during the day when it was clear as a bell - well, *that* was quite a few years ago - and then, on this morning, I was here at this view area for a slightly hazy sunrise. Although I could smell no smoke, I have a feeling the haziness (so hazy that the sun was a huge, red ball I could look at with my unaided eyes) was due to wildfire smoke drifting in again from surrounding fires.
Nonetheless, the scene was beautiful and I felt good about being able to photograph this spot with nobody else around. Early mornings are really a great time for photography with few to no other people, which is also helpful during the pandemic.
On a side note, the majority of people I saw on the trails were carrying and wearing face masks, and if you go inside any buildings here in WA State, you are required to wear a face mask.

You know that moment in life when you stop whatever you’re doing and you suddenly appreciate something more than ever before, because it simply works? This is the girl I spent the past fifteen days with and it’s the first thing that’s just been so easy in a long time. We went back to France, where we first met, together, saw people we were close to, went to places we used to spend time in, and it was lovely grasping a hint of all those feelings we left behind last year. Lisa is a part of my time in France I’m sure I will never lose, and I am incredibly thankful that I can share all those memories with her. We live almost seven hours apart here in Germany, but it’s never really mattered during the past year. When we got to meet again things were just like when we saw each other every day back in France, and I think it’s things like that that make you realize that you’ve found a very special person you should keep in your life.
Know as the “Wisconsin Desert”, this preserve harbors some of Wisconsin’ rarest plants along with lizards, prickly pear cacti, and lots of sand.

Wanna know how to say peace in 100 different languages?
For TOTW My secret life....
If you wanna check out our hard work....
In my secret life I am surely a hippie. I freaking wish I could have went to woodstock. Plus I think hippie clothes are pretty far out!!!
Sooooo me and the mini lutman wrote the word peace on me in 100 different languages. I got these markers that "claim" they are super washable, I sure hope that is something that they are not exaggerating about, or I am screwed.
It sure does not look like 100 words, but it is, swear!
Well I am off to shower to see if I can get this all off of me, and then I am off to dinner, well maybe. If I am all markered up, I guess I will order takeout!
Happy weekend!!!!
Edit**** For being a "washable" marker, it is very hard to get off. The blue ones were a pain, I had to use lava soap to get it off, now I smell like my grandpa!!!!
I know it is a little early for Valentines Day, but I wont have time before Tuesday to try this. My idea didn't go exactly as planned. I had intended to take this outside, but it has been snowing all day and Pyper was very uncooperative about sitting in the snow. I moved the shoot inside, but still didn't get what I wanted. I really need to work on my 'studio shooting with a flash' skills.
This Osprey let me know in no uncertain terms that canoe boy was not supposed to be ANYWHERE near H I S bayou. Osprey perched high in a tree skeleton high about Horsepen Bayou.
Have been canoeing today and after spending nine hours outside I’m a bit late to the party and a bit weary. The yard need grooming after I returned from canoeing and so I’m finally here to play. It’s going to take me a while to catch up, but I’ll get there. Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend.

I know, I know...these shots have been done a million times before. But there is something fun and challenging about hunting these compositions down and lining everything up. Furthermore, the images I took last year were too underexposed and I had to push the files too far, losing the white color of the Aspen trunks. This was taken at an awesome grove of huge (biggest I have seen) Aspens in the Hope Valley area today. It caught my eye a few times as I drove by, and so I turned around at a pullout on the way up to the lookout above Red Lake, and bushwhacked through the brush to check out these giants up close. Hope valley is looking very close to peak right now, and should be absolutely perfect this weekend. Still a bit of green here and there but tons of good color around Red, Caples, Blue Lakes Rd, and the Cabin. Hope you enjoy, let me know what you think!
LOL! I don't know why I thought of that... so unoriginal! haha Anyway... it's Thursday! Woohoo! Almost Friday, thank goodness! I hope you're not all "fished" out. =) This is the last of my fish shots, ok? So don't worry... no more for a while. Just had to pick my fave ones before I hit delete. They take up too much space on the pc.
Today is my husband's bday! I'm so thankful for him in my life. I ❤ him. I ❤ him. I❤ him. *hehe* On another note... I jogged today! 25 minutes! I'm so proud of myself. I'm getting so much better. And seriously... I owe it to Zumba! Have a wonderful Thursday! =D

As most of you will know from your own personal experiences, travelling into space on a regular basis is very demanding on the body.🚀
So following a regular check up at their vets, Hoof and Horace have been advised to take it easy for a little while. That is all very well Hoof said but we have to finance our drinking, clubbing, and general amusement.👨⚕️💷🍻🍷
As luck would have it Horace had been reading an edition of botch it, build it, and run with the money monthly, where he saw an advert for “Highly skilled engineers required to build a bridge somewhere in Tintagel”.📖
H and H where dab hands with Meccano when they were youngsters so they thought this bridge would be a complete doddle, well with CV’s in hand off they went.🌉
On the drive to Tintagel Hoof asked ‘what is the bridge for’, Horace replied “it something to do with some geezer called King Arthur he instigated it, anyway as long as he pays us game on”.👑💷
With such fine engineering qualifications the boys were immediately hired, so Hoof started drawing up a design for the bridge, while Horace made out a list of parts which they would require from Screwfix.👨🎨🎨
Within weeks the bridge took shape (could contain inaccuracies) and it wasn’t long before the main land and the mythical Island were joined in order that tourists could have a cup of tea with King Arthur and his nuts, whoops Knights.
Of course before any bridge can be signed off yes you guessed, it has to be tested.😱
Click here to see what technological wizardry H & H devised in order to give it a signing off certificate👀👀🙈
