"But did you know, when it snows, my eyes become large and the light that you shine can't be seen..."

The hit by Seal was featured in Batman Forever, which came out barely a month before the Chicago & Northwestern Railway became part of the history books. 30 years later, both the movie and the railroad are remembered fondly, but only one part of the Northwestern can still be found roaming the rails today.

UP 6706, former CNW 8804 (with a little Operation Lifesaver left), serves as a rear DPU on an Oak Creek bound coal train as it crosses the frozen Root River in Racine, WI during blue hour. Growing up only a mile from the Kenosha Subdivision, this is the first time I have ever seen a C&NW unit on these rails. Hopefully, it'll lead once before it inevitably goes for repaint.

I really thought they'd not bother to repair this again but I was wrong. Work started this week.

White stands for the proposed borders of an excavation. When crews need to mark the limits of the excavation needed for a basement, or even just a trench, they mark the outlines in white paint. This is usually the first step before any underground infrastructure is precisely located. It shows where the digging will occur.

Orange chalk indicates communications. This could include cable TV, phone systems, alarm wiring, fiber optics, or conduits intended to carry signals rather than power. With our modern reliance on telecommunications, it’s wise to be careful when digging around orange markings.

Blue chalk s the color of water, thus it makes sense that blue markings indicate the presence of water lines. Though not as potentially disastrous as a gas or power line, hitting a water pipe or main would have some pretty severe consequences on a project and surrounding residents. Take care around water, despite the peaceful, blue color.

Yellow means natural gas, petroleum, or steam. It’s the color for urgency and caution. Anyone who’s tapped into a gas line and lived to tell the tale knows the value of accurate markings for gas lines. Oil and steam can be almost as problematic. Take care when you see yellow markings.

I know these guys are everywhere in Caliornia making holes and lots of noise, but they are so cute. This guy had his foot up in a position that reminded me of the very recognizable logo on the Captain Morgan bottle.

Clown-faced western woodpecker with a complicated social structure, living in small colonies. Best known for its habit of hoarding acorns: the birds drill small holes in a dead snag, then harvest acorns in fall and store them in these holes, to be eaten during winter. Such a "granary tree" may be used for generations and may be riddled with up to 50,000 holes. Nesting is a group activity, with several adults (up to 12 or more) taking part in incubating the eggs and feeding the young in a single nest.

You know you're in trouble when you find yourself having a conversation with a miniature vase that's just over ½" tall. If it was a full size vase, it would be perfectly normal, of course. :)

For this week's Crazy Tuesday group theme, In the Middle.

I know I know... you'll say, "Shaq, but Halloween is like more than 2 months away, what are you doing?!?!"...

And did you know

That every flake of snow

That forms so high

In the grey winter sky

And falls so far

Is a bright six-pointed star?

Each crystal grows

A flower as perfect as a rose.

Lace could never make

The patterns of a flake.

No brooch

Of figured silver could approach

Its delicate craftsmanship. And think:

Each pattern is distinct.

Of all the snowflakes floating there –

The million million in the air –

None is the same. Each star

Is newly forged, as faces are,

Shaped to its own design

Like yours and mine.

And yet… each one

Melts when its flight is done;

Holds frozen loveliness

A moment, even less;

Suspends itself in time –

And passes like a rhyme.

Did you know there's a duck that doesn't quack? It's the Muscovy duck, one of the most interesting and unusual members of the waterfowl family.

Muscovy ducks are large, averaging 4.3 kilograms (9 lbs.) with a typical wingspan between 137- 154 centimeters (54- 61 in). Males are generally larger than females. Muscovy ducks have red fleshy protuberances, caruncles, that surround the face of adult birds, particularly prominent in adult drakes (males). Their plumage is brownish black with iridescent green, purple and white wing patches.

Muscovy ducks have a social hierarchy in which males protect their territories by dominating other males with visual displays. Dominant males mate with females that nest in their territories while other males remain as bachelors. This species is non-migratory and active during the day.

We all know that Tulips originate not from Holland but from the far-reaching Ottoman Empire. Much has been written about that provenance, and it's particularly relevant to the history of this Horned Tulip. It was described in Europe already in 1753 by great Carolus Linnaeus, who named it for polymath and naturalist Conrad Gesner (1516-1565). He writes that it comes from Cappadocia and was brought to Europe in 1559. Possibly, I might add, through the efforts of Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq (1522-1592), 'Austrian' diplomat to the Ottomans.

A quarter of a century before Linnaeus's description - during the bizarrely luxurious reign of Sultan Ahmed III (1673-1736) between 1703 and 1730 - Ottoman Tulip Craze frilled to a frenzy. That's testified to by a court painter Mehmet, who gives exquisite pictures of some 50 Tulips in his Osmanlı lalesi or Lale mecmuasi of 1725. Many of his flowers boast frills and filaments and quaintness not often seen in Tulips. One of these is this Tulipa acuminata.

I don't know when it was first cultivated in European gardens. But in 1876 Henry Harpur-Crewe (1828-1883), an English theological naturalist, waxes eloquent: "T. acuminata cornuta, with its strange narrow parti-coloured petals, is so quaint and curious that no one who has once grown it likes to be without it".

Here it's a staple of the Amsterdam Botanical Garden.

I know I promised a few photos from London this week but they are going to have to wait (Yay! I hear you cry!)

Yesterday evening myself and Darren Blight Photography headed up to Dartmoor hoping to get a nice sunset at Holwell Rocks. We arrived a little early, so we parked the car at Saddle Tor car park and took a walk down to Emsworthy Barn to see the field of Bluebells that grows there every year. They've flowered a bit late up there and I don't think they were at their best but it was still a lovely sight to see.

I've never been to this spot on the moor but seen it photographed a lot of times, it's such a pretty area and despite the midges it was a great hour with the camera.

I spent a lot of time looking for a composition that was slightly different to the norm and settled on this view. I hope you like it.

I know this is out of season but I have been trying some different effects for fun. This car was hidden away under some trees along the side of the road. The wind was so strong that day so there was already a blur to the leaves in the original photo so I guess you could say I am trying to rescue it.

I know it's been ages since I've made any images to upload mostly because I'm not able to get a decent sized image to work with without crashing atleast a zillion times before. But all this aside, I've made these two hats for " Art In Hats" an event that I'm sure you'll be hearing more about pretty soon!

Yes I know I’m spoiled, living in West Cornwall. There’s no arguing with that, nor denying the abundance of natural beauty on the doorstep. Every so often I have a dig around on the laptop, generally when I’m looking for something else, find a shot I took at some point, stumbled across and worked on a couple of years later, and then promptly forgot all about for another eighteen months. I don’t remember taking this one at all. So the exif tells me, it was in September 2022, exactly a week after returning from Iceland, with the lens that didn’t make it onto the plane. I was obviously feeling sorry for the 70-200 and had used it that day out of a sense of guilt - having empathy for inanimate objects really is a step too far from reality at times. I spent a couple of months wandering around in a stupor after that Iceland trip, going to the usual haunts with the camera without much thought for what I was doing. Everything in Iceland was so overwhelmingly magnificent that it’s almost as if the first few outings after my return to Cornwall didn’t even happen. Going through the motions, barely noticing where I was or what I was taking pictures of, and dreaming of Dyrholaey and Vestrahorn while pointing my camera at places I knew so well that the pictures just took themselves with little involvement from me. Those two weeks in Iceland were the trip of a lifetime, and all else paled into insignificance around that time. I still have so many plans for Iceland, but that’s another story for another time. Let’s return to Godrevy.

Jumping forward to today, I've barely been to Godrevy at all in recent months. Hardly set foot outside the house until quite recently in fact. Usually the winter season here is a great time for landscape photography. You can shoot throughout the day and the golden hour glow is often spectacular, but this time around, especially since the turn of the year, to say it's been slim pickings would be an understatement. Barely a day passed without rain in some form or another, and the sky seemed to be almost permanently hidden by an unmoving blanket of grey cloud that hung heavily over the county like a damp duvet. At the end of January the weather forecaster told us it was the wettest month on record in Cornwall. As February gave way to March, the announcement came that it was the rainiest winter ever down here. The garden was bogged down in thick mud, while our spirits clung to the wet grass for fear of sinking down below its surface.

Sometimes I'd try to embrace the conditions and don my waterproofs, but by the middle of March it was all getting to be too much. During those two months I went out with the camera just five times at home, three of them within the first eight days of the new year. Sometimes I managed to dodge the rain, but only just. As for Godrevy, during the winter months it’s not unusual for me to come here every week. Just twice since January this year though. Things have finally begun to improve at last as Easter waits in the wings, but we still have the odd horror show when it pours down from morning to evening without a pause. It doesn’t help that the van has been out of action all winter either. It’s always been particularly satisfying to pull up in the car park and put the kettle on. Hopefully next winter normal service might be resumed.

I had a few images in mind for this latest post, none of which were this one. Until I noticed it in a downloads folder on my laptop. And when I look back through recent stories, the last homegrown one was posted in the middle of January with an image taken a month earlier. So I think it’s about time I remembered my roots and shared something from here in Cornwall. Even if it’s an image I don’t remember taking because I was still dining out on an adventure I wouldn’t forget if I lived to be two hundred and fifty. In fact, the handful of outings in recent months have produced a small number of images worth sharing, so I’ll be sure to do so eventually. But not yet because the next big jaunt is just around the corner.

We do know there was once a great Pictish fort at Burghead, built between 2,000 and 1,500 years ago, though little of it remains today. Tradition held that the hollow visible in the corner of the ancient fort held a well.

When the planned town of Burghead was built in 1808, the well was selected as its water source. Excavations the following year revealed a solid rock chamber, with a flight of stone steps leading down.

Theories about the function of the ‘well’ include:

a shrine to Celtic water deities

a place of ritual execution

an early Christian baptristy

a Pictish cult centre, later converted to Christian use

Swear you see the good in me

But that don't beat the hood in me

And I got my intentions and yours,

Yours are make believe

'Cause baby, I know, baby, I know

I, I'mma do you dirty

Say you love me now,

But, baby, it's too early

I, I'mma do you dirty

You think you love me now, I think you should be worried

Everyone knows to properly take care of your unicorn you must feed it snacks between every 2hour period.

Lack of snacks will render the unicorn immobile and unwilling to provide magical rainbow farts which will cause a lack of rainbow methane in the atmosphere. Crops will die and people will starve.

Be sure to feed your unicorn, murderer!

...deep down inside you miss me.

"we passed upon the stair,

we spoke of was and then,

Although I wasn't there,

he said I was his friend,

which came as some surprise.

I spoke into his eyes,

"I thought you died alone

a long time ago"

"oh no not me

you're face to face

with the man who sold the world"

I laughed and shook his hand

and made my way back home

I searched for form and land,

for years and years I roamed

I gazed a gazley stare

at all the millions here:

"we must have died alone ,

a long long time ago"

"who knows?not me,

you're face to face

with the man who sold the world

I know it may be unethical to take a color film photo and make it monochrome but I just had to for this particular scene. When I originally photographed it, despite being Fujicolor Superia, I had black & white in my mind. It just feels right to me.

I know film enthusiasts are against it, but its my photo and my work at the end of the day. There are no rules when it comes to photography in my opinion.

“There is nothing else than now. There is neither yesterday, certainly, nor is there any tomorrow. How old must you be before you know that?

There is only now, and if now is only two days, then two days is your life and everything in it will be in proportion. This is how you live a life in two days."

And i'd give up forever to touch you

'Cause I know that you feel me somehow

You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be

And I don't want to go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment

And all I can breathe is your life

'Cause sooner or later it's over

I just don't want to miss you tonight

And I don't want the world to see me

'Cause I don't think that they'd understand

When everything's made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

ENG: Hi, you love out there. You know, it's funny how the landmarks of a city are so referenced. Very few people crossed our path on Friday during my little photo tour with my child.

The House of World Cultures (former name: Congress Hall) was the US-American contribution to the 1957 International Building Exhibition. The technically revolutionary building was declared a gift from America to its friend West Berlin and was built on the south bank of the Spree in the Tiergarten. The Berlin vernacular soon aptly named the building "Pregnant Oyster". The building also produced a sad headline, because on May 21, 1980, during a press conference, the southern part of the roof edge collapsed due to a structural failure.

______

This rock is know as Lands End in Cabo San Lucas. This is the last bit of land at the tip of the Baja Peninsula. On the horizon is nothing but the Pacific Ocean for a very long way. The sea lion on top of the rock seemed quite content to stay there all day as tourist boats swirled around the spot.

Since Bloodfall as we know it is done, there's no point hiding this guy away. So years ago, before Linda even, I had this idea to put Bloodfall in the neo-Gotham setting of Batman Beyond as sort of a "final season" to him. So I had Billy throw this together. At this point J would basically be a brain in a super powerful robot body with all kinds of crazy xenothium-fueled abilities. But then I had the idea to put Linda in some armor, had a bunch of fun with that, then we got to where we are now. Since this 'fig is cool and Billy worked hard on it I'll be sure it sees some use in the future, but as of now it's just a piece of a future we'll never see.

I know I posted some frost patterns not that long ago but when nature provides me with an opportunity go get a POTD in the bag so early in the day I just can't resist.

Kevin said he thought this looked like a wing so another treasure hunt theme done!

(Treasure Hunt Theme No 73 - Wings)

If I didn't know better.. I'd hang my hat right there..

If I didn't know better.. I'd follow you up the stairs..

Stop saying those sweet things you know I like to hear!

The horns are blowing louder.. the bailiff's drawing near.

Why do I keep drinking

Wasting my time on you?

If I didn't know better..

But, damn it, I do.

Did you know GOAT is an acronym for "greatest of all time?" No, I didn't either. After all I was taught to speak properly. But did you know you can have a Goat conversation? That's not an excited conversation between Crazy Stevie here and the goat whisperer, or even a quiet chat between a Dinorwig fanatic and his grey goat hunter, trying to decide where to find their prey.

It's a debate about the places you could go on a Sunday morning for a bit of an adventure that's the "greatest of all time". I may be biased. In fact I might be obsessed. But I think it's Dinorwig slate quarry in Snowdonia.

Does anywhere else get your goat?

It Is Done

Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Today is Good Friday. It marks the day our Lord was crucified.

I suppose it's Good Friday because if he hadn't sacrificed his body then the world would have been lost. But the good news is, that on Sunday, we commemorate the day of his resurrection.

God bless you and Happy Easter.

I'd like to thank two very special people who helped me with this shot and on very short notice, my good friends Levi Garrets and Uri Jefferson. You guys are so awesome! Thank you!♥
