A sub-temple of Kennin-ji, only open for a few weeks each year in spring and autumn. Beautiful Kirishima tsutsuji (azaleas) to see there but the light was harsh for photos.

This style of map, found at Service Areas along the highways, is placing North at the top, unlike more local maps which have no consistency in direction.
Kagoshima is a diverse prefecture, both culturally and geographically, in that it has everything from historic sites to active volcanic complexes, including a lake with 2 meter long eels (Ikeda-ko down by Kaimon-dake). It's main problem in summer is that it's close to the warm Kuroshio Current, and it's at the same latitude as Jacksonville, Florida. The Kuroshio goes up both sides of Kyushu so onshore winds are extra warm and humid.

Mount Karakuni, the highest peak of Kirishima, overlooks Ebino Kogen and is another popular day hike. The ascent to Karakuni's summit is steep and takes about two hours. It is also part of Kirishima's spectacular 12 kilometer ridge trail, which leads from Ebino Kogen over several volcanic peaks to Mount Takachiho-no-mine at the other end of the national park

It was a wonderful hike through a very mysterious, fairy tale-like mountain forest. I hope this picture manages to convey this feeling.

A couple of Major IJN units seen here at peace in1939, the battleship Kirishima and the large carrier Akagi lie at anchor. Kirishima was sunk a couple of days after her sister ship Hiei, falling victim to the accurate radar controlled gunfire of the US battleships Washington and South Dakota in the same general area as Hiei, and in yet another bitter action around the embattled island of Guadalcanal in November 1942. Akagi of course was one of four Japanese carriers to meet their fate during the battle of Midway in June 1942, in the pivotal battle of the Pacific war when the US Navy gained its first measure of revenge for Pearl Harbour, sinking four of the six carriers involved in the "Day of Infamy"
PACIFIC OCEAN (July 25, 2014) Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force guided-missile destroyer DDG Kirishima (DDG 174), near, Columbian navy frigate FF Almirante Padilla (FM-51), middle, and People's Liberation Army (Navy) ship DD Haikou (DD 171) sail in formation for a photo exercise (PHOTOEX) while underway for Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise 2014. Twenty-two nations, 49 ships and six submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC exercise from June 26 to Aug. 1, in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2014 is the 24th exercise in the series that began in 1971. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Dustin Knight/Released)

I went yesterday to take photos of the eruption of Mt. Shinmoe, but due to rain and clouds I ended up with only an ash covered car and a few pictures of the nearby Kirishima Shrine.

The mountains of Kirishima are an important site in the creation mythology of Japan. It was in this area that the god Ninigi no Mikoto, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, is said to have descended from heaven to rule over the earth.
Ninigi no Mikoto landed on nearby Mt. Takachiho-no-mine bringing with him the three imperial regalia: the sword, the mirror and the gem; symbols of the imperial family. He eventually married a local princess, becoming mortal in the process, and established the lineage of Japanese Emperors.
Devoted to Ninigi no Mikoto, Kirishima Shrine was built during the Muromachi Period on a different site from where it stands today. Since then it has been destroyed numerous times by volcanic eruptions, but always rebuilt. The current shrine was constructed in 1715 where it survives to this day. Its large, beautiful buildings are surrounded by forest and have been declared important cultural property.
