One of the most important shrines in Japan, it is dedicated to Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the god who came to earth, landed on Mt. Takachiho, married a human and became the ancestor to all the Japanese emperors. The imperial emblem of the chrysanthemum is found all over the shrine. It was first built in 950 AD and took its present form further up the slopes of Mt. Takachiho-no-mine at Takachiho-ga-wara in 1484 during the Muromachi Period (1333-1573). Because this is an active volcano, it was destroyed several times by eruptions, and finally rebuilt in 1715 farther down the mountain on its present site. The torii and some foundation stones are still at the original site above the visitor center at Takachiho-ga-wara.

One of a class of four battlecruisers, rebuilt between the wars as fast battleships, Krishima underwent a major rebuild in the 30's. In this she was lengthened by some 25 feet, given new machinery which increased her power from 64,000 shp to 136,000 shp, which saw an increase in speed from 27.5 kts to almost 31kts.which was quite impressive given that her displacement has also risen from 32000 tons full load as built, to over 37,000 tons after reconstruction! In one of the last battleship vs battleship engagements in history, she was sunk by gunfire from the US battleships Washiungton and South Dakota off Savo Island on 15 November 1942.
