Low bamboo on a foggy day on the trail up to Lake Byakushi and Lake Rokannomiike from the complex around Ebino Kogen. There was a lot less there in 1985 and a nice hotel on the south side that was later town down and is now a roped off parking lot.

While hiking to Shinmoedake in Kirishima National Park, Sakurajima decided to loose a big one that was audible all the way across the bay. It was morning and cloudy but enough light showed the ash cloud rising.

KIRISHIMA MANUVER FIELD, KAGOSHIMA, Japan (Jan. 30, 2020) - Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Members with the 12th Infantry Regiment, 8th division, and Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, stand in formation during the closing ceremony of exercise Forest Light Western Army at Kirishima Maneuver Field, Kagoshima, Japan, Jan. 30, 2020. The exercise consisted of field training events including basic infantry skills, vertical assaults integrated with MV-22B Osprey flight operations, and combined-arms, and enhances the collective defense capabilities of the U.S.-Japanese alliance. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps' only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region. My mom was pausing to take a picture. Our families were celebrating her 88th birthday. She wore the traditional Japanese golden hat, vest, and
cushion for 88 years old. Japanese tradition is that they change to a different color for every age of celebration For example, red is for 60 years old (kanreki還暦). 70 (koki) and 77 (kiju) years old are purple. These occasions shows that Japanese culture celebrates the aged with wishes for a
long and healthy life. While we were in the hotel in Kirishima, we went to an onsen to have a traditional big fancy dinner and spent a night together with family and relatives. My son gave a magic show, and we had a great
time together.
