PACIFIC OCEAN (July 9, 2014) Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ship JS Kirishima (DDG 174) launches a training missile during exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2014. Twenty-two nations, more than 40 ships and submarines, about 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 26 to Aug. 1, in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. While serving with the US army in Vietnam, I took my week of R & R (Rest & Recreation) in Japan, departing from Danang Airbase on Thanksgiving day. While in Japan, I took the train south from Tokyo to Kagoshima City, on Kyushu Island near the southern tip of the country, where I visited an American family. My host took me for a visit to Kirishima National Park in Kyushu Province, which contains several hot springs. Kirishima National Park
