People have long been attracted to Kamloops landscape and geology. The last ice age built an ice dam creating a lake that filled the Thompson Valleys and reversed the flow of the rivers. A warming trend melted the ice and drained the lake exposing white silt terraces consisting of the sediments of the former lakebed. Here wind and water have sculpted extensive gullies as well as hoodoos with their distinctive columns and cap rocks.
Work is set to get underway shortly on a project to stabilize Ten Mile Slide on Highway 99, improving the long-term safety and reliability at one of the most technically challenging sites to maintain in the province. Ten Mile Slide, which is located within Xaxli’p’s Fountain Indian Reserve, is approximately 17km northeast of Lillooet on Highway 99, and has experienced ongoing slide activity for several decades. Highway 99, which is vital to the local and regional economy, acts as the primary connector between Lillooet and Kamloops.
