This little journal was created with winter in mind - the cover is white with pearlescent floral decoration, and the spine heavyweight silver paper. The decoration on the front came from an old botany book, and I made a photocopy and then did a tape transfer to stick the image on the cover. The Endpapers are hand-marbled by me in blues, greens and yellows.

The story behind this book is that the covers are made from a one-of-a-kind handmade print I made using real Japanese maple leaves that I printed on a gelatin plate (yes, like Jello!). This is also the way that field biologists used to make prints of plants they found while traveling, albeit in more natural colors.
I traveled to Asheville, North Carolina to take a class on gelatin printmaking with the very talented Holly Fouts where we bound our favorite prints into books. We had lots and lots of extra paper left over though, and I took one look at the paper and thought it would make great book covers! I'm so glad to give my printmaking prints new life as this colorful journal.
Check out this cool instagram video of me making the gelatin print.

Three signature Magnani Biblos paper, blue floral commercial paper also used as paste down inside covers. SOLD
The spine is adorned with old fabrics, silk and hand-dyed velvets. The flower was made and given to me by my dear friend Tonya. She made the flower, attached it to a lace piece that she wrapped a gift in. I loved the flower, so I misted it with a vintage color and used it as part of my journal closure.
We didn't have much "down time" to write in the family trip journal. Had to do this first thing in the mornings, before pushing off.

Background is poster paper. It is made of scrap pages, acrylic paints, and stencils. Pages are defined by rubbing black gesso along the folded edges with my finger.
This folds like a 1 page 'zine.
I made this inside pocket for my journal. In the journal swap we can each tuck little surprises in the pocket when we receive them.

This is how I spent my New Year's Eve. I was almost through with my other journal, so I decided to start a new one for the new year. I decided to stay in the Time Life series of the "Life World Library". This book is on India. For some reason I never did anything to the covers of my other visual journals. I thought arting up the cover of this one would be a good start to a fresh start. I really like how it turned out.
