Wild Blue Flag Iris (Iris virginica) Blossom
Location: Upper Herring Lake Nature Preserve, MI
Year: 2010
Story: While covering spring in Benzie County for Pure Michigan I spent a lot of time at Upper Herring Lake Nature Preserve. In early June, a large area of wetlands fills with the blossoms of wild Blue Flag Irises (Iris virginica var shrevei) for a short period of intense beauty. This is my favorite image of one of these gorgeous flowers, taken from the boardwalk through the wetland.

You may notice it's a little dark, that is because I need a macro ringlight and I will soon purchase one. I shot this one at 1/50 I think, so it came out like this. I can live with it but I need to shed a little light on my subjects.....have a good one! View On Black

Tall Bearded Iris
Photographed at White Rock Gardens, Benton, Arkansas, a private iris and daylily display garden
Take Feb. 4, 2006 -- the warm winter has fulled the flowers in to blooming early this year. It had just rained.
Purple Iris, which has more deeply ruffled edges to it than the two other Irises pictured here.
Iris, a Greek word for rainbow is a perennial herb that grows from rhizomes or bulbs. There are over 300 species of Irises including the three above German Bearded Irises, which are the most common variety found in gardens.

The folded iris bud
So compact, so pointed,
A miracle of packaging.
A miracle too, the iris open --
Geometric and complex.
