La mitologia greca ha chiamato Iride, la messaggera degli Dei, e cioè la divinità che, servendosi dell'arcobaleno come passaggio, consentiva il "dialogo" tra Olimpo

e Terra. Il fiore dell'iris fu così chiamato perché la molteplicità dei suoi colori ricordava, per l'appunto,

i colori dell'arcobaleno. Il significato associato a questo fiore è messaggio di buona novella.
