Maymont is a delightful 100 acre historical estate near downtown Richmond, Virginia.
The origin of the property was as a Victorian estate established by James Dooley and
his wife Salley. Mr. Dooley had acquired his wealth in railroading. Today, the estate and
its buildings are beautifully maintained by the private Maymount Foundation. I found this
iris bloom along a walkway behind the Dooley mansion.
This tour of Maymont was part of a visit with my flickr contact John H. Bowman and his
wife Ruth Ann in late-April, 2012.
Iris rhizomes are harvested, dried, and aged for up to 5 years, then steam-distilled to make "iris butter"--one of my favorite scents. Unfortunately for me the few perfumes I have found with iris are pricey.

As with the other flower pictures I've posted recently, I've used the technique of taking multiple exposures and changing the focus in each exposure. They are then combined in Photoshop CS4 to give more depth of field than the lens is capable of in just one shot. This technique is explained in the March 2009 issue of Popular Photography.

This is the second year I have tried to grow irises. Last year the bunnies chomped them down before I could spray them with Skoot.
