When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch speaking Belgians say “Belgie”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA.
The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone Brew – and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

An excellent, well-balanced IPA from the folks at Pelican Brewing.
I rented a tilt-shift camera for the weekend but it's pouring rain out, so I figured I'd re-visit my suffering beertography hobby.

Well, as you might have quessed, it was safety. long drive today with my family...so after getting my girl to bed, this was my effoert. But PP took longer than that. I made those marks in LR, because Silver effects does not have those funny tools. Actually it was fun. Should experiment with LR little more, perhaps even Photoshop. Hmmmmm.

DuClauw Brewing's IPA quenches the palate while I wrack my brains over the Tampa Bay Times' Sunday crossword. Not being au fait with baseball and soap stars from long ago, I had to peek at the answers while many gaps remained. I did get 95-down though: Buccaneers' home? Why, Tampa of course.

Ipswich IPA
Ipswich IPApours an attractive, hazy, deep coppery-amber color with a big, pillowy off-white head that leaves good lacing. On the nose it offers up a rich caramel malt base that lends a somewhat cake-like quality, along with a generous dose of floral, herbal hops. Take a sip and the big malt profile cascades over the palate with a deep toastiness, a bready quality, caramel, and some fruity notes. All 60 IBUs are apparent here as the flavorful, resinous hops command your attention, but the full and satisfying malt backbone keeps this IPA quite balanced for the style. Smooth and medium-bodied, this brew goes down super easy. Excellent with spicy Pad Thai, or rosemary & garlic lamb.
Serving Temperature: 45-50°F
Alcohol by Volume: 6.5%
Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 60
Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
Malts: Carapils, Cara 30-37, Roast
Hops: Columbus, Cascade
Würzburger Hofbräu
Würzburger Pilsners are often not given enough respect because of the horrendously cheap imitations that have spread throughout the world like some kind of plague of poor taste. The Würzburger Pilsner, however, is an example of exactly how the style is supposed to be done. In fact, we feel this German-style pils (there are Czech-style pilsners as well) is a great example of why the style became so popular in the first place. On the pour, look for a somewhat hazy, sunny, light straw color with a big, fluffy white head. The aroma offers up a base of crackery and biscuity malts, but it’s the hops that really take center stage here and are a true delight, offering a lemony, floral, noble hop character with a slight herbal and vaguely minty impression. We found this pilsner very smooth, crisp, and bright on the palate with light bready malt notes overlaid by spicy hops which persist into the finish with an herbal note and light lemony acidity. Extremely well-balanced and eminently drinkable – enjoy!
Serving Temperature: 40-45°F
Alcohol by Volume: approx 5.0%
Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass, Flute, Mug or Stein, Stange
Köstritzer Schwarzbier
Köstritzer SchwarzbierIf you think dark beers are all big and heavy, Köstritzer will challenge those notions. Not only is its level of alcohol relatively low at 4.8%, it is not a thick, chewy beer; in fact, a beer’s color actually has nothing to do with its body. Nor does this brew present a particularly bitter, overly-charred character. On the pour it certainly is dark, with some garnet flashes when held to the light, and a rich, creamy looking light brown head. But sample the aroma and notice how delicate the character. There are some chocolaty notes along with bread dough, and a lightly sweet creamy impression. There’s a hint of an almost lactic note which makes the chocolaty character seem more along the lines of milk chocolate than bitter dark chocolate, and additional impressions of leather, tobacco, and cola peak in and out of the malty background. While the hops are mild, they do offer a lightly spicy quality that brightens the aroma. On the palate, Köstritzer is light-to-medium in body, with a pleasantly clean and crisp character. Notes of brown bread are prominent, with an excellent roasted malt flavor than never comes across as acrid or gets out of hand, and a Tootsie Roll impression that appears on the mid palate as the beer warms. Finishes balanced with a toasted grain character and a nice light spicy hop note. Prost!
Serving Temperature: 45-50°F
Alcohol by Volume: 4.8%
Suggested Glassware: Flute, Pilsner Glass, Mug or Stein
Garde Dog
Garde Dog is brewed in the French Bière de Garde “farmhouse ale” style, although, like most of Flying Dog’s beers, they’ve put their own spin on it. On the pour, Garde Dog offers a clear, golden, light-amber color with a generous fluffy head. Look for a distinct earthy quality to the aroma, which we were really quite fond of. There’s a slightly off-dry impression with some hints of underlying fruity esters tending toward apple, lemon, and apricot, with a floral and somewhat herbal hop note atop the soil-like earthiness. On the palate, this brew comes across very juicy, with the hop bitterness expansive across the palate but restrained in power, and there’s a spicy quality attributable to the Saaz hops and rye malt. We found it somewhat bready, as well, with a hint of tartness towards the end and a nice cereal grain note in the finish. Super clean and smooth drinking. Salut!
Serving Temperature: 45-50°F
Alcohol by Volume: 5.5%
Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 27
Suggested Glassware: Tulip or Snifter
Malts: 2-Row Pale, Rye Malt, Malted Wheat, Flaked Wheat, Biscuit Malt
Hops: Perle, Saaz
As rugged as the terrain traversed by the 23 Cariboo camels, this IPA boasts a unique hop profile. Reigned in bitterness allows the flirtatious battle between the resinous character and tropical notes to play out. Look for hints of lychee, citrus and evergreen. This unfiltered IPA finishes dry, with an ever so slight malt influence.
Originating as a cask-only version of the Mill Street Tankhouse Ale, Tankenstein is a dry-hopped IPA with full body and matching bitterness. It is a perfectly balanced ale with caramel and biscuit malts complementing the dryness of US grown bittering hops but with a massive over-lay of American Cascade hops being added to the tank during ageing to “dry-hop” the beer and give it a wonderful perfumey character. Grapefruit and piney resinous tones are the main contribution of the Cascades and make this a truly classic American-style IPA

A glass of Mikkeller 10 IPA from draft at BrewDog Aberdeen.
Mikkeller 10 is a 6,9% abv India Pale Ale brewed at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium, with ten different hops: warrior, simcoe, centennial, cascade, chinook, amarillo, nelson sauvin, nugget, tomahawk, east kent golding (the same ones used for his original Single Hop IPA series).
The beer poured a hazy golden orange color with a fine, beige head. It sported a wonderful, rich hop aroma with both fruity notes, grapefruit and peaches, as well as a nice pine forest tone. The mouthfeel was medium heavy with a creamy texture. The flavor started with a mild malt character, hints of caramel, before turning fruity with a fresh citrus character. The bitter hops were milder than expected, creating a mild bitter finish with some lingering fruit.
This is a fairly rich, but mild IPA, much more harmonic than his Single Hop IPAs. I like it.
Hell yeah. Back in the lovely state of Wisconsin and I find at the local grocery a nice selection of the rare New Glarus brews.
First up for enjoyment is the Hearty Hop IPA. Sorry for the Holiday Inn plastic glass. All I had...
Appearance: Rich medium to dark amber color. Incredible thick light brown creamy head that stays for the entire glass. Nice flow of bubbles. Lovely Brussels lace. inviting look to say the least. The bottle and 6 pack are a testament to low-key economical design... just screaming small indie brew crafted with care and love.
Smell: Oh wow. OH WOW. Hops. Caramel. Fruity aromas. So complex. So yummy.... must drink soon... drooling.
Taste: Shazaam! My god this is a wonderful brew. One of the greatest IPAs I have ever had. massive hop bitterness assaults your tastesbuds like the D-Day landing. Then you get a sweet caramel rush, followed by some fruity reserves that will leave your mouth stunned and bewildered at the awesome-ness it beheld. you are left with a glowing incredible bitter hop aftertaste that is so good.
Mouthfeel: Very good. Nice carbonation, more than i was expecting from an IPA. This just sits in the mouth and begs for enjoyment.
Drinkablilty. You kidding me? I'm moving to Wisconsin so I can drink this regulary. It ain't fair that it is only available in this state. I had three and was buzzing hard. Amazing beer. So highly recommended, I'd say take a road trip to WI so you can try it for yourself.

I've never had a bad pint yet from Brewsmith, and this 6.0% IPA is no exception. It's helped along by the fact Wigan Central do know how to keep a good pint.

A bottle of Viven Imperial IPA from Brouwerij van Viven in Sijsele, Belgium, at Café Rose Red in Bruges.
Viven Imperial IPA is an 8% imperial india pale ale brewed by Brouwerij van Viven at the famous contract brewery De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium, using Simcoe and Tomahawk hops. Viven was founded in 1999 and is one of a growing number of "beer firms" in Belgium, i.e. brewers without proper breweries, that brew their beer at contract breweries such as De Proef.
With a best before date in May 2014 I expected the Viven Imperial IPA to be reasonably fresh. It poured a slightly hazy, deep golden color with a beige head. It sported a floral hop aroma, typically fresh nettles, with a sweet caramel note underneath. It had a full bodied mouthfeel with a very smooth texture. Great carbonation. Flavor started out with a mild caramel sweetness followed by some tropical fruits, mostly grapefruit, but with a green, grassy note too. The bitterness was of the mild kind, not like those massive US IIPAs. It finished with some lingering fruit and caramel.
Overall a very decent, for Belgium excellent, imperial IPA, nothing extreme but well balanced, fruity and sweet.
