Prohibition Lawless IPA is a lightly hopped ale inspired by the 1920’s brews that sat in underground tunnels and rail-cars destined for dry countries. Prohibition’s complex, refreshing, honest flavors are craft brewed in small batches at a small brewery in British Columbia, Canada. Only the finest ingredients including pristine Canadian water and Cascade hops are used

The Manic IPA series gives Elysian’s crack team of brewers the chance to indulge their bitter bone, employing massive amounts of such unusual hop varieties as Nelson Sauvin, Citra and the Sorachi Ace grown exclusively by Virgil Gamache Farms. Elysian was one of the first US breweries to check out Sorachi Ace, back when the Gamaches had grown only three plants. It has made its appearance in such other Elysian favorites as Konishiki, Loser and Yuzu’s Golden Ale. It lends a resinously tropical note to any beer it touches.

This is a BIG beer. Mind Blowing ammounts of hops give this beer tons of flavour and aroma. Not for the faint of heart. The big mean cousin to the original Phillips IPA

Phillips Brewery of Victoria , BC , makes a very good IPA

This beer is brewed using 2-Row, wheat, Vienna and caramel malts and is hopped with Summits for bittering and flavor and Ahtanum for aroma. This IPA was also dry-hopped to give a big citrus and spicy aroma, with Ahtanum, Challenger and Chinook hops. An American style IPA that has a high amount of bitterness but is well balanced and very drinkable.

From the Master Brewers in Surrey a cask of their excellent IPA at the Whip

Babylon is an English take on an American style of the traditionally English India Pale Ale. Originating from the long voyage between England and India, India Pale Ale’s have a strong presence in the modern craft beer scene and have been adopted as the quintessential Northwest beer style. This big Double IPA is influenced by its English roots, but firmly planted in the modern stylings of Northwest brewing

India Pale Ale from the excellent R & B Brewery

Glass of (wonderful and fresh) American IPA in the Golden Garden craft-beer bar in Hiroshima (near hattchoubori).

The chalkboard said this was "ノカル IPA"(maybe "NorCal IPA" [Moylan's Brewery]); anyway, it was great stuff, super fresh, and just drenched with piney and grapefruity hop flavor. I had two pints of it even though I probably shouldn't have...

The bar, Golden Garden, was also excellent and I highly recommend it to anybody in Hiroshima. It's very small and a bit expensive, but it had a great cozy atmosphere, with good food and very friendly owners. There were only three taps, but the the beers were very well chosen, and there was a good selection of bottled craft beers.

One of the owners also said they were currently working to open a second location in Hiroshima (in roughly the same neighborhood, but to the south a bit), so hopefully there will soon be even more choice!

A bottle of Hardcore IPA from BrewDog in Fraserburgh, Scotland, at HÃ¥ndverkerStuene in Oslo, Norway.

Hardcore IPA is a 9% abv imperial India Pale Ale. It poured a clear golden color with a frothy white head. Massive hop aroma, with citrus and piny notes. Medium heavy body. Flavor starts out with a mild toffee sweetness, before the hops kick in. Strong fruity character, almost pineapple, with a bitter resinous undercurrent. Long and bitter finish. This is, indeed, a hardcore IPA!

That the Hardcore IPA is an excellent beer became obvious to all when it took home the Gold Medal among 69 tough candidates in the category "Imperial India Pale Ale" at the 2010 World Beer Cup in Chicago a couple of weeks ago.

A glass of Citra IPA from Stoup Brewing in Seattle served on draught at their taproom.

Stoup Citra IPA is a 5.9% abv and 50 IBU india pale ale, dry hopped with Citra for aroma. It poured a cloudy orange amber color with a lovely citrus aroma. Creamy mouthfeel. It had a decent malt character to back up the citrus and resin character of the hops, though I found the bitterness a bit too strong in the aftertaste, lingering for half a minute or more. But still a very refreshing and well made IPA.

A bottle of HÃ¥rdkogt IPA from BrewDog in Fraserburgh, Scotland, at Schouskjelleren in Oslo.

Hårdkogt IPA is a contract brew made by BrewDog for Danish beer importer Drikkeriget, run by Jeppe Jarnit Bjergsø - the brother of Mikkel Borg Bjergsø aka Mikkeller. It's inspired by Hardcore IPA, but is milder in alcohol - with 7.6% abv - and less hoppy.

HÃ¥rdkogt IPA poured a golden amber color with a big, frothy, white head. Nice hoppy aroma with notes of pine and citrus, but also a note of caramel sweetness. Medium heavy mouthfeel. The flavor started out with a dose of caramel. The hops, when they kicked in, was milder than I had expected, but they added some fruitiness and a good bitter finish with lingering sweet notes. All in all a very drinkable IPA, but surprisingly mild compared to Hardcore IPA.
