Norfolk Southern SD70MAC #2597 leads an eastbound intermodal train into the morning sun at Tipton, PA just east of Altoona on April 3, 2019. The signals and their supporting bridge are scheduled to be retired and removed from service here on April 16, 2019.
A westbound BNSF intermodal has just cleared into the Midway Yard and has eased to a stop as they prepare to cut off the tail end of their train next to the yard power. Meanwhile, East Hump DS normals the number 1 crossover and gives an encroaching eastbound CP manifest a clear down to Jackson Street.
Construction work in the Howard Street Tunnel means intermodal trains from the West and South must terminate in Curtis Bay and use a temporary facility at the auto shipping terminal.
Seen here is a Curtis Bay yard job bringing said intermodal out of the temporary facility and in to the yard.
Running just under track speed, PN Intermodal service 5PM5 from Kewdale to South Dynon highballs through the locality of Korunye between Mallala and Two Wells behind NR106/NR6/NR51 on Saturday the 18th of December 2021.
The crew car, car carriers and the double stacked loading will be removed at the Adelaide Freight Terminal before the train continues onto Melbourne the following morning. NR51 was added to this train at Spencer Junction.

CPKC’s new daily northbound intermodal, 181, seems to be seeing mild success, with the train I shot on 5/20 being all of 20 cars long with two KCSM GEVOs on the point

BNSF 6275 leads a westbound intermodal through the desert in Valentine, AZ.
With their train still strung out across the Rio Grande into Mexico, a merger pair of GEs, one each ex KCS and CP, lead CPKC train I-181-29 (daily intermodal from San Luis Potosi, Mexico to Bensonville, IL) through the Customs and Border Patrol VACIS scanner at 5 MPH as they roll north at MP 0.6 on CPKC's Laredo Sub, the former Texas-Mexican Railway mainline. The train is running up the pseudo street running beaide Santa Isabel Ave. and passing Union Pacific's office housed in the former Missouri Pacific passenger station which was built in 1913 by MoPac predecessor International and Great Northern Railroad.
The station was once served by Aztec Eagle which offered thru passenger service from St. Louis to Mexico City in conjunction with NdeM. The last MP train called here in 1969 but four years later Amtrak brought service back to the station in the form of the Inter-American which operated from Chicago (though no thru service was offered into Mexico) until 1981, though since then this station has been freight only.

LMX 8587 leads two other 4-axles and a SD40-2 past the former NP depot in St. Cloud back in 4/1996. The models in this B39-8, B30-7A, GP50, SD40-2 consist were pretty common through St. Cloud for late BN early BNSF consists once I arrived St. Cloud in 1995. The orange would follow soon in large numbers.
Four axles soon disappeared from BNSF intermodal trains and pretty much everything else as thousands of Dash 9s were delivered. Not many four axles found on mainlines these days days except on select locals. The lead Lummox is long gone, not sure if it survived in the second hand market. Was never a LMX fan, but I have to admit the grey GE is more interesting than any intermodal power I might see when I visit St. Cloud next time.
I'm struggling to find the words to tell just how long these intermodals are. I'm not even entirely sure that this picture conveys the scene well enough.
But, just in case...

Scooting into town past Cement City on Main Track 1 of the BNSF Marceline Sub is BNSF train Q-LPCLAC6-21A led by a worn out CSX Dash 8. 10/21/23.
Intermodal traffic bound for the west coast is stretched out across the New Tecumseth countryside as CPKC 113 approaches the south end of Baxter.

NS 21M makes its typical late-morning trek westward on the Reading Line at Emmaus. The 29.2 searchlight signal was retired a couple of years later when the Reading Line was converted from directional 251 to bi-directional 261 territory.
DRS's 66422 winds down Glen Garry with 4D47 1310 Inverness to Mossend Up Yard intermodal service. It will shortly enter the short (240yd) Killiecrankie tunnel before emerging on the 10 arch viaduct.
The train is passing the site of Killiecrankie station; despite the cramped location the Highland Railway managed to squeeze in a passing loop and a small good yard. The station closed in 1965, the former stone station building was demolished with a new house built on the site.
Killiecrankie battle site was to the right of the rear of the train. Fleeing Government troops were caught in the narrow defile and one, Donald MacBean, leapt to his safety over the river, a spot now known as the Soldier's Leap.

A Northbound UP intermodal passes downt through Bealville towards Caliente. the back of the train can be seen just entering tunnel 5 at Cliff.
It's not often you see GP30s n intermodal trains, but the Port of Tucson GP30s assemble stack trains for UP. This is the pair shoving another few stacks after being loaded.

GL102 & CF4429 curve into Cressy with 3AM9 SCT Intermodal. Both locos are hired power to supplement the holiday period rush. Surprised the GL made it all the way on this run without self-imploding. 17/12/2025

NS 265 is seen passing Lake Seward in Schenevus with a colorful trio of engines on the point. Due to a washout on Pan-Am, 265 originated out of Mechanicville instead of Ayer, resulting in a train of only double stacks down the former D&H.

GBRf Charity Railtours-branded Class 66, 66782 works 4D62 04:48 Seaforth Container Terminal to East Midlands Gateway Terminal through Hartford in the early morning light.
On March 15, 2020 D-ELL 193 236 leased to Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo (WLC) took the long way to with train DGS 41158 to Rheinhausen via Salzburg. The intermodal train was photographed under clear skies near Freilassing.
Am strahlend klaren 15. März 2020 wurde der DGS 41158 nach Rheinhausen wegen Bauarbeiten über Salzburg umgeleitet. Die Bespannung mit der an die Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo vermieteten D-ELL 193 236 war zwar nicht übermäßig spektakulär, brachte aber eine willkommene Abwechslung, als hier WLC-Loks nur selten anzutreffen sind. Der Zug hat eben die Grenze nach Deutschland überquert und strebt hinter Freilassing seinem Ziel entgegen. (5097)
Following a night of localised snowfall in Cumbria and North Yorkshire, grimy Freightliner Intermodal 90041 and 90044 drift and snake down the grade at Beck Foot in charge of the slightly late-running 05:32 Coatbridge to Daventry Intermodal on Tuesday 22nd January 2019. The Howgills are just visible in the mist.

That's honestly what those intermodal stacks are lettered - "Cold Train Intermodal." Very fitting of Two Medicine on this frigid day, although a fortuitous shaft of light descended on the train just as it crossed the bridge, warming my at least my spirits.

On the dreary and chilly morning of Halloween day a NS intermodal train can be seen adjacent to Ohio State route 183 near Alliance.
A pair of Canadian Pacific AC4400s lead an intermodal of 146 double stacks east through Greenville Jct., Maine, bound for the Port of Saint John, New Brunswick.
Freightliner 86622 and 86628 roll through Carlisle station's platform 4, the crew changeover about to take place, but further down the platform as it turned out, much to the disappointment of the driver taking over! This is the 18:14 Coatbridge to Crewe Basford Hall intermodal on Wednesday 17th October 2018.

Eastbound Rock Island intermodal heads through Joliet, Illinois in September of 1976. F-untis lead the much more modern 4700. However, the F's were no doubt equipped with cab signals. They were required on this section of the railroad.
