Intermodal traffic for Chicago curves through Lake Park with one GE on each end.

Three NS locos, running elephant style, lead this intermodal freight down the Lurgan Branch on a sunny afternoon. Seen here crossing the Yellow Breeches Creek. A fisherman is seen on the right fishing for trout.

I used a long lens to photograph this long intermodal so we could see much of it down the tracks. The tracks, and the train, curve off to our right at the far end.

The high-rail truck is a MOW vehicle, parked to watch for falling rocks. The rocks on the right are normally fenced off from the tracks (like those on the left) but NS has been clearing brush and they temporarily removed the fence. This means a MOW worker must be staffed at the site at all times in case something breaks free and rolls down into the path of a train.

I found an old bridge with a good view of the mainline at a curve.

An eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe intermodal train traverses Lombard Canyon east of Toston, Montana, on July 1, 2001, powered by a pair of venerable EMD SD40-2s. Due to a barge hitting the bridge at Decatur, AL there were a ton of reroutes across the south with most of them utilizing the Chattanooga and W&A Subs between Nashville and Atlanta. Here's rerouted Memphis to Savannah intermodal I125 (I925 reroute symbol) cruising through north Georgia near Kingston. It sure felt like old times watching a never ending parade of trains.

As seen from an eastbound auto pacing on U.S. Highway 34 out of Galesburg, Illinois, a speedy Southern Pacific intermodal with Chicago on its radar, sprints through Oneida on Burlington Northern’s Galesburg to Aurora main line on the afternoon of June 2, 1991. Powering the train is a trio of Cotton Belt locomotives, with a pair of EMD GP60s sandwiching a GE B40-8.

With Precision Scheduled Railroading, traffic is frequently combined to reduce train starts and cost. This train was once the hotshot Burlington Northern train 4 pre-merger between South Seattle and Chicago. With PSR in place on BNSF, it now has a large slug of manifest on the head end and drags across the railroad at much less than expedited speed.

The only upside is the extra traffic on the train fills out Trinidad Loop in eastern Washington much better.

A 610-axle CN 106 heads east with grain up front, followed by the regular intermodal traffic. Power is CN 2238 and CN 2586 up front and CN 8964 mid-train.
