I found that my 3/4" chisel and metal files worked much better than sandpaper for smoothing and shaping the cement.

Those two scraggly door frames in the kitchen have been patched and painted with a fresh glossy coat of white.

I discovered that it was much easier for me to just use my hands (sort of like clay). I wasn't going for a machine-smooth look, and using my hands I could layer the mixture to create a weathered texture.
