Praising Yan'an (1976)
Qian Songyan
This traditional ink landscape composition depicts the revolutionary landmark town of Yan'an in Shaaxi, where the Long March of 1934-5 ended and the Communists established their base in their struggle against the Nationalists and during the war with Japan. The pavilion in the foreground is similar to those in many of Qian Songyan's landscapes.

Part of Cultural Revolution: State graphics in China from the 1960s to the 1970s

In 1942 Chairman Mao Zedong declared that all art should serve the worker, peasant and soldier. During the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-76) this policy was vigorously implemented.
Images of the leader appeared everywhere: bold, colourful posters combined text and image to promote political messages. The predominant colour was red – colour of the revolution – and when Mao was shown it was always amid a glowing light.
Traditional landscape styles were reimagined and now incorporated symbols of modern and industrial achievement. Even the traditional folk art of the delicate papercut, used to decorate windows at home, promoted ‘Mao Zedong Thought’.
This exhibition displays a selection of Cultural Revolution propaganda posters, revolutionary landscapes, images of the leader and intricate papercuts all of which were collected in China during the 1970s.

New tatoo, 4 days old. Thanks to Garth at Alien Fine Arts, Niagara Falls. He did an amazing job. The claw actually covers a small tatoo (my first) I got back in High School, like in '89.

So I haven't done any art work for ages so I traded in my usual tools for some watercolours and ink. Unsurprisingly I pretty much suck at it. I am slowly improving but most of these are way off.
This one just plain sux.
This morning I decided to play with my new Sigma 70-300mm lens with macro. Sorry for the limited subject matter - t'is the most interesting stuff I have on hand at the office.

Copy paper, coloured with distress inks, sprayed with water, crumpled, then darker distress ink wiped over. Sprayed with Glitz Spritz.

Walking on Ameland's beach I collect the biggest feathers I could find and I use them to draw.
Tillandsia utricullata on Scrub Live Oak - Oak scrub is a thicket of branches, trapped leaves, all sorts of tillandsias. I was playing with pattern here. Ink and ink wash. Using a nib from my late father - he did all his writing with a dip pen. This nib is Esterbrook Fine Elastic, which is wonderful - will go around corners without snagging or spattering as long as the paper is smooth. Aquabee Super Deluxe, 93 pounds. From one of my photographs. We got 2.5" of rain yesterday - not a day to be outside.
