Liquid Chalk Ink

The Method of Usage:

Although most people living outside the town may never have heard of Irlam Inks they will probably buy products each day that the company has helped to produce.
Crisps, biscuits, chocolate, and cream crackers - you name it and Irlam Inks has more likely produced the ink for the packet at its unobtrusive five-acre plant at Dean Road, Cadishead.
The ink and adhesive factory is one of the top three suppliers to the food market and its inks appear on hundreds of household products. It is also responsible for making and supplying the ink and adhesive for wall coverings, magazines, brochures, business stationary - even tickets for the London tube.
Owned by business giants Reed International, Irlam Inks is one of several companies in the Crown Paints Division which forms part of Reed Decorative Products.
The company has made inks since the 1950s but was originally a wallpaper mill built in 1907 and founded by J. Kinder and J.P. McDougall and Company. In 1915 the company was taken over by Wall Paper Manufacturers Ltd and one of the partners, Mr Kinder, was appointed to the board of directors.

The factory was extended and new machinery installed. Until the 1960s the company concentrated on making inks and adhesives for wall coverings, but now only one quarter of its products are used for wall coverings.
The company's managing director Mr Brian Baker claims Irlam Inks knows more about wall coverings than any other company in the world, which is not surprising since Mr Baker ensures that the company keeps pace with fast-moving trends and the newest ideas.
Some of the company's inks are specialised and can be used for all types of printing including, lithographic, letterpress, flexographic and gravure, in fact almost all kinds of ink except those used for printing newspapers and pen ink.
It has more than 20,000 ink formulations stored in a computer, but the company is always willing to learn more and endeavours to produce colours to a customer's exact requirements. It has a 99 per cent record of success says Mr Baker.
Irlam Inks employs 150 workers, most of them whom
live locally since this makes for better relations and working, according to Mr Baker. The company's strength lies in an efficient workforce composed of chemists, sales and administrative staff, and factory workers.
All employees are trained in the factory although some take part in courses provided by Reed, the parent company. The shop floor employees are largely members of the National Graphical Association and the technical staff are members of NATSOPA.
"We have happy management-employees relations here. We do have a few problems from time to time. But small companies like ours tend to have a community feeling and our staff are very flexible," said Mr Baker.
Mr Baker is assisted by sales director John Duffin, financial director David Bradley and works director Jim Stone. The company also has several managers to ensure the smooth running of the plant.

Mr Baker described Irlam Inks as a "healthy" company which was managing to survive the economic problems. The company had been affected by a change in the public's buying habits, most people preferred to paint their walls instead of wallpapering them these days, he said.
Every batch of ink produced by the company is tested for such things as viscosity, strength and colour by chemists in a quality control laboratory.
No product is allowed out of the factory until it has been checked and if there is anything wrong it is sent back to be rectified.
The company produces 17,000 kilos of ink and water-based adhesive per day - 6,000,000 kilos a year. Little of the products are stored on the premises, for the key factor of the operation is quick service. A customer can order a batch of ink in the morning and receive it in the afternoon, said Mr Baker.
Its adhesives are used mainly in the production of wall coverings, for laminating separate sheets of paper together and on the back of ready-pasted products. They are also sold to the carton and box-making industry.
It could be said that Irlam Inks has put Irlam on the map. One of the town's biggest employers, it has not made any worker redundant during the recession which means the company is something of an asset to the area.
Today I chose a tulip to photography with one of my favourite fountain pen inks, Noodler's Apache Sunset.
Definately going to play more with this colour of ink and flowers. The manner in which this ink separates and shades is fantastic so it needs further exploration in different light settings.....

Made in much the same way as the Ink Trails experiments. Magnetosphere, with a black and white facelift, runs to audio by the Flashbulb (Kirlian Isles II). For 100 frames, each of the 1000 particles rains ink down onto the paper. If the particle should pass through the paper, it leaves traces of this passage. At the end of the 100 frames, all the geometry collapses onto the paper and then the cycle starts again.
