The small snowfalls that we've been receiving lately have all accumulated into a nice blanket of snow over the landscape and the thermometer has registered lower than normal for this time of year. Winter has definitely arrived. So last week when I had another occasion to do some plein air sketching, I did it from the comfort of my car. I parked in a neighbourhood of Vanier where I used to live and sketched the Cummings Bridge and North River Road in the foreground. It was a pleasant day and I enjoyed returning to my old neighbourhood. When I returned home, I drew over my rough pencil sketch with ink pens using two different toned inks - one black and another grey. By using the grey in the background, I was hoping to create a sense of depth.

Ink drawing in a Leuchtturm1917 sketchbook using Sakura Micron and Gellyroll Moonlight pens, 20 x 14 cm (8 x 5.5 inches).

Technical note: The Sakura Gellyroll Moonlight pens are impressive. Not only do they offer a variety of grey tones but they are opaque which allows you to draw over black lines! The Gellyroll Moonlight series of pens also come in different colours, some with a metalic finish.

It was a huge, grand restaurant bar, not a cosy cafe!

I sheltered from the odd raindrop underneath a monumental sculpture (plenty of those in Vienna). Drawn to the sound of the church organ, a military brass band and teenagers getting drunk.

The sky realy was the same colour as the tarmac, there was torrential rain.

I surprised the mule train rider as he rode past on the narrow rock cut path. He said "Sir, don't move".

One woman said she walked all the way down the road in the shade so she wouldn’t be in my way!

It was very hot but I could draw in the shade of the planes.

I have work for sale on Etsy. Almost all sketches are available as prints:

I liked the angled shadows but they disappeared very quickly.

Started this sketch in 2022 and finished in 2023.

I drove past this place and it took a short while to sink in what a gem it was. I turned round and sketched it. There was ample parking.

As I was sketching a local girl was watching me. She practised her English as said she likes painting. Later, another local came over to watch. He was a sculptor.

Spotted this house when cycling past. Had to draw it. I don’t know how you get to it or what the address would be.

3 year old Jack thoughtfully drew his "alien with many legs, three eyes and lots of hair and a big mouth."

There were more dramatic views but this one had a bench.

We had an international urban sketchers exhibition and meeting here.

I found this scene before I arrived as I searched for streets to draw on Street View.
