I concepted, art directed and laid out these promotional signs which were hung up at all national SuperTarget stores. My goal with this set of environmental signs was to create a bold statement with the products being marketed. I wanted to pump up the printed pieces by using everyday groceries to use as the background, and to create a soft glow in the background of the products. Graham Brown, the photographer (Graham Brown Studios in Minneapolis) used tissue paper to create the duotone background behind the products.

It was fun to watch this pair of Loons. The youngster kept nudging his/her dad and it appeared this was a loving couple, male and female. I have since been corrected in my assumption and the little brown one is actually a juvenile.
Great Northern Diver
Gavia immer
Lóma mór
Common Loon
Status: A widespread winter visitor to coastal areas from September to April.
Conservation Concern: Green-listed in Ireland. The European population has been assessed as Secure.
Identification: Great Northern Divers are large and powerfully built. The heavy, spear-like bill is held in a horizontal position when birds are on the water. The head is large with a steep forehead and a crown that is usually flat; but can be raised forming a bump- like crown. During the winter the bill is grey with a dark tip and birds have a prominent pale eye-ring and a dark half-collar on the lower neck. In summer the head and bill darken becoming black and the upper body plumage takes on the distinctive black and white chequered and spotted pattern.
Similar Species: Red- throated Diver, Black-throated Diver, White-billed Diver, Great Crested Grebe, Cormorant, Shag.
Call: Mainly silent over winter, contact call is a loud moaning sound rising slightly
Diet: Mostly fish but also feeds on crustaceans, molluscs, annelids, insects and amphibians.
Breeding: Age of first breeding: not known. Great Northern Divers do not breed in Ireland. The closest breeding birds are in Iceland and the breeding distribution spreads east through Greenland to North America.
Wintering: Great Northern Divers occur along the Irish coastline between September and April and are usually observed as single birds or small groups. They are the most numerous of the divers occurring in Ireland and are particularly abundant off the south, west and northwest coasts over the winter. Great Northern Divers occur along a variety of coastlines, particularly deeper bays and inlets, as well as shallow bays with sandy shores. They can forage up to 10 km offshore and numbers close to shore tend to be highest when winds blow onshore.
Where to See: Three sites hold internationally important numbers of Great Northern Divers- Inner Galway Bay (County Galway), The Mullet Peninsula (Co. Mayo), Donegal Bay (Co. Donegal). Four sites hold nationally important numbers - Courtmacsherry Bay (Co. Cork), Wexford Bay (Co. Wexford), Wexford Harbour & Slobs (Co. Wexford), Castlemaine Harbour (Co. Kerry).

"... no churz zum hütige Abe ...

Common Loon Gavia immer
Jeff Kozma spotted and reported a Common Loon at Wenas Lake on April 18th. I went up there and saw and photographed it, then went back up with Mary and saw & photographed it in the late afternoon. It's been reported to eBird since by numerous others. An eBird report came in today reporting, once again, a Common Loon on Wenas Lake (to be clear -- same species, same lake), with a funny comment, though I don't think that irksome lister meant it to be funny nor realized just how out-to-lunch he seems with: ""Somewhat incredibly, I panned across this beautiful breeding plumage bird while thinking to myself, “wouldn’t a breeding plumaged Common Loon be great right now?”" Perhaps Eric hopes to give the impression that he didn't know of the continuing Common Loon here, and that he summoned it up -- so he could take credit for Jeff's find. The lister's use of "incredibly" was appropriate. I wonder if he is also who taught it to wave and sing, as it did for us this evening ;-)
Most sarcasm aside, loons (the birds, not human loonies) are always magical to see in breeding plumage and their call reminds me of the music of one of my favorite composers -- Edvard Grieg. Thank you Jeff for sharing your find.
See Something --> Say Something: Don't enable illegal and unethical birders -- poachers. Help break their habits. Call them as you see them.
Stop pishing and using playback on rare and sensitive birds and in heavily birded areas.

Discovering the city is one of the student most favorite activities. During the summer we organise once a week a walk through the most popular areas of Berlin, and then we always have time to drink a beer all together. :)

An adult Common Loon (Gavia immer) observed feeding and or resting at Pierce Lake in Rock Cut State Park during spring 2024.
I have never had a chance to be close to one of these birds ... and I was very fortunate at Nicola Lake today.
Had to have help identifying this one. Was a little surprised to learn that this was a loon, since we found him on the gulf. Would have expected him to be on fresh water. This bird was huge! Body size was similar to that of a pelican & much larger than a cormorant or an anhinga. He didn't have any buddies with him. Taken on the Florida gulf near Palmetto on 2/27/07 by Jenny Jackson.
