The Common Loon seen here is in pre-alternate molt, with some nice fresh black coverts sporting white spots. The bill is now all black (only culmen is black in winter) and soon the entire head will be black.

The Great Northern Loon, Great Northern Diver, or Common Loon (Gavia immer), is a large member of the loon, or diver, family of birds. The species is known as a Common Loon in North America and the Great Northern Diver in Eurasia, its current name is a compromise proposed by the International Ornithological Committee.
The Great Northern Loon breeds in Canada, parts of the northern United States, Greenland, and Alaska. There is a smaller population (ca. 3,000 pairs) in Iceland. On isolated occasions they have bred in the far north of Scotland. This species winters on sea coasts or on large lakes over a much wider range in Europe, as well as in North America.

First time we drove to Farleigh Lake which is off (north) Green Mountain Road on the way to Apex.
It looks like the residents have built a raft in front of their house to attract nesting waterfowl.
This common loon took advantage of it.
We did not see any other birds during our visit to this lake.

It was fun to watch this pair of Loons. The youngster kept nudging his/her dad and it appeared this was a loving couple, male and female. I have since been corrected in my assumption and the little brown one is actually a juvenile.
