Immer ein Lächeln im Gesicht, immer freundlich – so kennt man unsere Damen an den drupa-Countern. Sie sind für die Messebesucher, Kunden und Journalisten die erste Anlaufstelle am manroland-Stand. Hier laufen alle Fäden zusammen. Egal, ob deutsch, englisch, französisch, spanisch, portugiesisch oder russisch: Die Damen haben immer ein offenes Ohr und vor allem viel Stehvermögen. Langeweile kommt hier nie auf. Oft muss improvisiert werden, damit jeder Kunde zufrieden ist, auch wenn es um schwierige Fragen geht. Der manroland-Stand ist den Damen am Counter inzwischen von A bis Z bekannt.
Always smiling, always friendly – this is how everybody knows our ladies on the drupa counters. They are the first manroland contact for show visitors, customers and journalists. They are in control of everything. No matter if German, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese or Russian: the ladies are always prepared to listen. Most of all, though, they have a lot of staying power. It never gets boring here. There is often a need for improvisation to keep every customer happy, especially when there are tricky questions. Meanwhile the counter ladies know the manroland booth like the back of their hands.
Common loon (Gavia immer)
I had taken a canoe out on a Lake Placid/East Lake, NY so I could get close to loons and spend some time watching and photographing these beautiful birds.

Tijdens Kom in de Kas! Is “Kom Op! (voor komkommertelers)” van start gegaan en heeft Lex Immers samen met initiatiefnemer Wouter de Heij de eerste komkommersmoothie in Pijnacker gedronken.
Kom Op! Is een initiatief om telers die onder vuur liggen door het dreigende EHEC bacterie een hart onder de riem te steken middels een ludieke actie: de komkommersmoothie.
Naast deze actie werd er natuurlijk informatie verschaft over de waar- en onwaarheden over de EHEC bacterie en vraagt men tevens aandacht voor de aankomende dreigende HBO laboranten tekorten in de tuinbouw door de bezuinigingen in deze opleidingstak in het hogeronderwijs.
Ik moet zeggen: komkommersmoothie!?! een beetje vreemd, maar wel lekker. Doorgaans ken ik alleen smoothies gemaakt van fruit, maar een smoothie van groente….jawel. Rode bieten, wortels, spinazie: wie weet?! Meer info www.komop.net

Common Loon - Moss Landing, CA, USA
Shot this past weekend during the Golden Gate Audubon Society's fundraiser trip to elkhorn Slough.
The extensive white checkering seen only in the breeding plumage is seen in all these shots. This year I have had good luck with the Common Loon since these are relatively common around here during this time. This one was quite close to our boat in the Moss Landing harbor.
The loons are also called "Divers", mostly in Eurasia. This species is called the "Great Northern Diver" in Eurasia and is usually called "Common Loon" in the USA. The International Ornithological Committee has proposed the compromise name "Great Northern Loon" for it.
These birds are specialist fish eaters and can dive up to 200 ft to catch the fish. During breeding season, the female may be seen carrying chicks on the back and how I wish I could get a photo that shows that.
The Loons have solid bones. This allows them to dive under water in search of fish. This also means that they need a relatively long 100ft - 600ft "runway" for take off. Once airborne this strong bird can fly up to 75mph. These birds achieve sexual maturity at 3 - 4 years of age and are believed to live up to 30 years. The "red" in their eyes apparently allows them to see better under water.
The Common Loon is the state bird of Minnesota.

Carina is a senior at the University of Connecticut- just a few months away from earning a Bachelor's of Science in Agricultural & Resource Economics, and a minor in Latin American Studies.
