This was one of up to 7 Great Northern Divers that were present on the Blackwater Estuary, Essex, Uk during January 2017. It has been quite an amazing winter for unusual numbers of sea ducks and other water birds. This one was so busy fishing for crabs that it ignored us as we drifted towards it. At one point it came up with a Hermit Crab in a shell, it expertly flicked off the shell to reveal the crab which it promptly swallowed.

sind die Bienchen bei ihrem Tagwerk. Diese liess sich direkt vor meiner Nase auf dem Wasserdost an unserem Teich nieder.

Immer noch im südlichen Teil Norwegens - die Reise geht aber immer weiter in Richtung Norden....

Plongeon imbrin - Gavia immer

This is the less common of the three Loons that can be found off the French Coasts in Wintertime
Several were visible in "Le Sound", the peaceful channel in front of Chausey Main Island, it is believed they were taking shelter from the frequent storms that have occurred in the area in the last two months, as Loons are not usually that easy to see!
Stermann & Grissemann im Moviemento bei "Immer nie am Meer". Den Film fand ich gut, aber die anschließende Fragestunde war wie immer eher quälend. Sowas klappt fast nie.
Am Schluß, nach langem Einpacken von Kameraequipment und Herumkramen in Herrenhandtasche, stand zwischen dem rettenden Ausgang und mir noch ein Team vom Lokalfernsehen LT1. Als letzter Gast im Saal, eh klar, Pech, peinliches Interview, das hoffentlich niemals nie gesendet wird. Naja.

The Great Northern Diver, known in North America as the Common Loon (Gavia immer), is a large member of the loon, or diver, family of birds. The Great Northern Diver breeds in Canada, parts of the northern United States, Greenland, and Alaska. There is a smaller population (ca. 3,000 pairs) in Iceland. The voice and appearance of the Common Loon has made it prominent in several Native American tales. These include a story of a loon which created the world in a Chippewa story; a Micmac saga describes Kwee-moo, the loon who was a special messenger of Glooscap, the tribal hero; native tribes of British Columbia believed that an excess of calls from this bird predicted rain, and even brought it; and the tale of the loon’s necklace was handed down in many versions among Pacific Coast peoples. Folk names include big loon, black-billed loon, call-up-a-storm, ember-goose, greenhead, guinea duck, imber diver, ring-necked loon, and walloon.
