Gavia immer
One of the birds that is always a big hit on our New England trips is the Common Loon. The breeding plumage is so fancy compared to the dull plumage we see down in Texas during the winter. It is also quite a treat to hear them call.

We have great northern divers/common loons (Gavia immer) wintering in our neighborhood from October to early May. They only breed in the Arctic regions.
Normally we see them in their brighter winter plumage. But in the end of April last year, I also got to enjoy two of them nearly finished turning into their summer plumage.
They splashed around for a long time, making their beautiful sound to each other.
I love getting the chance to enjoy them over time when they are close to land.

These photos are the last of my series of Loon photos. My next camping trip, I hope to have some sunlight. All these Loon shots were taken under very smoky skies, which made the images a bit dark.

Immer häufiger sieht man große blaue Feldflächen mit dem Büschelschön. So wird sie auch genannt.
Landwirte in Norddeutschland stärken damit unser Ökosystem.
Als Nutzpflanze wird sie zerstreut, also vereinzelt, feldweise als Bienenweide, Futterpflanze oder Gründüngung angebaut.

het immer zwarte hok, ooit wel een Veolia logo gehad en heel kort Captrain jasje, kreeg rond de jaarwisseling 2019/2020 een mooie Hommel jas aangemeten. Loc 653-01 is de vierde loc van Railfeeding die ooit deze Genesee & Wyoming livrei heeft gekregen. Na het stoppen van het rijden in België zijn de eerste drie, 561-03 t/m 561-05, naar Freightliner in Duitsland verhuisd. Nu heeft Railfeeding eindelijk ook weer een mooie oranje Class 66!
Nog één om het af te leren op Emmerich. Trein rijden we namens klant Viacargo. Trein kwam uit Slawkow.
Vor allem in den Sommermonaten, wenn die Autozüge nach Lörrach kommen ist der Güterbahnhof und das Autozugterminal gut gefüllt! Nebenan, auf den Gleisen der Wiesentalbahn huschen im halb Stundentakt die Flirts der S-Bahn Basel vorbei. Mit der Einbindung in die Trinationale S-Bahn Basel, bilden die Wiesental- und Gartenbahn eine einmalige Betriebssituation in Deutschland! Am 15. Juli war RABe 521 003"Weil am Rhein" genau von dem Ort auf den er getauft ist, nämlich Weil am Rhein, als S5 mit der Zugnummer SBB 87924 auf dem Weg nach Schopfheim und passiert hier die Wagen des UEX, welcher noch abgestellt im Lörracher Gbf stand.

'Seeing red'. Great Northern Divers can dive as deep as 60 metres per dive! remaining underwater for 3 minutes at a time. The red in their eyes helps them see underwater. I photographed this Great Northern Diver in first winter plumage diving and foraging on Loch Na Keal, The Isle of Mull, Argyll and Bute, Scotland.
Historic evidence suggests that Great Northern Divers have been around for at least 20,000,000 years, making them the oldest and most primitive example of a bird alive today.

This hefty diving bird is a winter visitor to the UK, where it can be seen around the coast or occasionally on large inland lakes.

Classified in the UK as Amber under the Birds of Conservation Concern 4: the Red List for Birds (2015).
When to see: Most likely to be seen in winter, or on migration in autumn and spring.
About
The great northern diver is a large water bird, which is mostly a winter visitor to the UK. Great northern divers breed in Greenland, Iceland and North America, where they're called common loons. There have been occasional records of them breeding in Scotland, but these are very rare.
They breed on large woodland lakes or pools on tundra, with the male and female working together to build the nest on an island or shoreline.. They are excellent swimmers, using their large feet to chase after small fish under the water.
Great Northern Divers usually spend the winter on the sea, favouring shallow areas close to shore. They can sometimes be seen migrating along the coast singly or in small flocks.
How to identify
Divers look a little bit like cormorants, swimming with their large bodies low in the water and their long neck held upright. The great northern diver is a hefty bird, with a thick neck and a large, heavy bill. They often look as if they have a big bump on the forehead.
In their winter plumage, adults have a plain black back, neck and head, with a white throat and belly, and a darker half-collar at the base of the neck. In their summer breeding plumage, they have a dark black head and neck with a black-and-white-striped patch on the side of the neck, and a black back with a white chequered pattern.
Distribution
In winter, great northern divers can most often be found off the coast of Scotland, northern, eastern and south-west England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. They can sometimes be found on inland lakes and reservoirs.

Aside from defending their home stake they will occasionally form slightly larger groups for group feeding in a neutral territory.
How fast do Great Northern Divers fly?
Great Northern Divers can reach speeds of 120 km per hour.
What are Great Northern Diver birthing rituals like?
Great Northern Divers arrive at their breeding grounds in April through May.
Nests consist of mounds of dirt or vegetation with the middle hollowed out. The male will choose the location for the nest, then both members of the couple will help to build it.
The female will lay 1 to 3 eggs. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs for the span of about 1 month. They then take turns feeding the young once they’ve hatched for the next 2 months.
The chicks will ride around on their parent’s back for its first explorations of the area. This is thought to both help keep it warm and to avoid predation.
Chicks are able to dive only 2 days after hatching. They are competitive with each other for food, and the fights can occasionally lead to a death.

Great Northern Divers can live as long as 30 years in the wild.
How many Great Northern Divers are there today?
A rough estimate puts the worldwide Great Northern Diver population at a little over 525,000 individuals.
Do Great Northern Divers have any natural predators?
Eggs and young are vulnerable to a number of predators – large fish, foxes, minks, gulls, corvidae (a bird family including crows, ravens, jays, and magpies), raccoons, skunks, and snapping turtles.
Adults are occasionally preyed upon by bald eagles and sea otters.
Grand Great Northern Diver Facts…
The genus name Gavia is a Latin word that was originally used to describe the Smew, a small sea duck. The two birds are scientifically unrelated but both are black-and-white divers.
Immer is thought to have one of two possible origins. The first is the Latin word immergo meaning immersed, related to the bird’s diving. The other possible source is an old Swedish word emmer or immer which means “ashes”, relating to the bird’s dark colouring.
“Loon” has an interesting origin too – it comes from Scandinavian words for “lame” like the Swedish lam and it describes how the loon’s large webbed feet, placed at the rear of its body, make it less than graceful on land.
Unlike most birds, Great Northern Divers have a number of solid bones (as opposed to hollow) that add weight to help them dive. However this makes it harder for them to take off, meaning that they have to use a “runway” approach of flapping and skimming along the water for a bit before they can manage to get into the air.
When attacked or when defending their young Great Northern Divers have been known to rush their attackers in an attempt to impale them.
Great Northern Divers appear on the Canadian $1 coin which is known as the “Loonie.” (A $2 coin is called the “Two-nie.”)
Adult Great Northern Divers can host up to 40 different types of body parasite.

Wasser ist immer ein reizvolles Motiv und es bietet viele Möglichkeiten, es zu fotografieren. Wie wäre es mit ein paar Wellenbildern. Es entstehen tolle, teilweise abstrakte Aufnahmen.
Water is always a charming subject and it offers many possibilities to photograph it. How about some wave pictures. Great, partly abstract shots come out.
139 309 der Bayernbahn (BYB) überraschte mich am Nachmittag des 30. März 2023 bei Dettingen (Main). Meines Wissens fährt der Zug üblicherweise über Darmstadt-Kranichstein und Babenhausen. Umleitungen quer durch das Rhein-Main Gebiet oder gar über Siegen/Gießen/Friedberg kommen aber immer wieder mal vor. Im nächsten Jahr wird die Lok 60 Jahre "auf dem Buckel" haben. Wünsche weiterhin gute Fahrt!
Bayernbahn 139 309 with the (almost) daily "Henkel" factory to factory service surprised me near Dettingen (Main) on March 30, 2023. While it usually runs via Darmstadt-Kranichstein and Babenhausen, detours right across Rhein-Main touching Frankfurt or even via Siegen/Giessen/Friedberg may occur once in a while. This loco was put into service 1964, so the 60th birthday may hopefully be celebrated in 2024. Long may you run! :o)
While the value of our Canadian Loonie (nickname for the Canadian Dollar) continues to sink, we can get some comfort in the thought that our loons are still well and floating.
Pictures taken earlier this year, when our weather and the value of our Canadian dollar was so much better :)

Promesse tenue...
En cette toute première matinée de juillet, jour de la Fête du Canada, j'allais à la rencontre d'une famille de Huards, certes un des symboles aviaire fort du pays, composée de deux petits nouveaux nés, dont le plus vieux se serait pointé le bout du bec une semaine auparavant, au jour de la Saint-Jean, Fête nationale du Québec!
Depuis le début du mois de novembre que je rêvais à cette matinée où la promesse de cette rencontre me fut faite. Mon hôte, Guy Morneau, que j'avais alors guidé avec sa charmante conjointe Sylvie dans la forêt enchanté des Petit-ducs d'Angrignon, où nous avions eu le loisir de rencontrer in extremis Amandine au mémorable trou no 1. Je vous en avais d'ailleurs présenté alors le résultat, que revoici ici. Guy m'avait fait alors cette promesse en guise de remerciement.
C'est donc au petit matin du 1er juillet que la promesse fut tenue et comment donc. Le soleil, pour sa part, ne s'y sera jamais invité, remplacé plutôt par un couvert nuageux et par une brume persistante qui, à part quelques moments de dissipation partielle, nous aura accompagné tout au long de cette session merveilleuse et émouvante. Tel un gamin je me suis laissé transporté dans la chaloupe, habillement conduite par mon hôte, bien calé dans le fond de celle-ci d'où je pouvais appuyé ma lentille sur ses côtés et être ainsi au toutes premières loges de cette belle rencontre. Immense privilège. Merci Guy! Merci Sylvie!
Le produit de ses trois heures à accompagner cette petite famille donne des résultats peu lumineux mais jette plutôt l'emphase parfois sur l'ambiance et parfois sur l'inusité. Voici une première image sur près d'une dizaine que je vais vous présenter au fil des prochaines journées. Celle-ci, captée dans les toutes premières minutes suivant le contact initial avec le couple et leur deux petits, illustre bien les conditions qui prévalaient alors.

Tromsø war immer schon DER Ausgangspunkt für Arktisexpeditionen. In der Stadt gibt es Polarinstitute, Polarmuseen, Polaruniversitäten. Ein Held der Stadt ist Roald Amundsen. Er war einer der Ersten am Nordpol, durchfuhr als Erster die Nordwest-Passage und er war auch der erste Mensch am Südpol.
Mich persönlich verbindet mit Amundsen seit jeher auch meine akribische Vorbereitung auf alle meiner Unternehmungen. Und so schließe ich mich stets Amundsens Worten an:
Es gibt keine Abenteuer, nur schlechte Vorbereitung.

Tromsø has always been THE starting point for Arctic expeditions. The city has polar institutes, polar museums and polar universities. One of the city's heroes is Roald Amundsen. He was one of the first to reach the North Pole, the first to sail through the Northwest Passage and he was also the first person to reach the South Pole.
Personally, I have always been connected to Amundsen through my meticulous preparation for all my ventures. And so I always agree with Amundsen's words:
There are no adventures, only bad preparation.

Voordat we huiswaarts keerden naar Nederland van ons tripje naar de regio van Halberstadt werd eerst nog een paar uurtjes gespot langs de lijn tussen Hannover en Braunschweig. Het was namelijk redelijk weer, dat dachten we tenminste. Er bleken uiteindelijk toch een hoop wolken in de lucht te zijn. Dus was het wel erg veel geluk hebben met de zon. Ook is het maar afwachten wat er rijdt aan leuke treinen hier. De ene dag rijden de leuke treinen af en aan en de andere dag rijdt er geen moer. Een zaterdag staat niet al te goed bekend om de leuke treinen op deze lijn, maar dat mocht de pret niet drukken. Je weet het immers nooit. Nadat we de ochtend gespendeerd hadden in Wierthe werd er naar nog een leuke stek gereden aan deze mooie lijn. Zo zijn we neergestreken bij de bekende stek van Peine. Deze stek is bekend van beide kanten. Aan het einde van de ochtend kun je mooi treinen fotograferen vanuit Lehrte en als de zon ver is doorgedraaid kun je aan het einde van de middag treinen fotograferen vanuit Braunschweig. Wij stonden er voor treinen vanuit Lehrte. En nadat het in Wierthe ook al doorreed met de goederentreinen was het op deze stek weer raak. In een uurtje passeerde er flink wat treinen. De trein die eruit sprong was wel deze 151 van HSL. Nadat er in het goederenpad al 2 cargo's gepasseerd waren, hoorden we in de verte weer een goederentrein aankomen. De zon was helaas even weg. Toen de trein een minuut later in zicht kwam vanaf de brug was de zon gelukkig net weer tevoorschijn gekomen. Zo zien we hier de bekende 151 138 van HSL passeren met een grijze logoloze 187 van HSL en een leuke keteltrein uit de havens van Hamburg richting het oosten.
