The Foggy Dew, Sinead O'Connor & the Chieftains - Listen
Robert Capa was a Hungarian combat photographer and photojournalist. His depiction of the D Day landings on June 6, 1944 are some of the most recognizable images from World War II.
They have become even more famous as a result of a developing mistake in which the emulsion was melted from the majority of his 106 photos taken on D Day. As a result, only 8 of his 106 images were "usable".
Our lone Trooper wanted to do his best to reenact this famous image taken by Capa. He hopes he has done it justice.
I should note that I much prefer Boba's Alternative to this one, however, I am photographing 365 Days of Clones and not 365 Days of Boba. This image won by default. Please check out Boba's Alternative.
Enjoy!

Kenyan Public Affairs Officers visit JMRC
HOHENFELS, Germany – Three Kenyan Armed Forces officers recently visited the Joint Multinational Readiness Center to observe U.S. Army public affairs training as the African country’s military leaders work to develop and expand their own public affairs operations.
Lt. Col. Pius Migwi, a Kenyan military staff officer in charge of education, said the primary interactions between the U.S. and Kenyan militaries in the past had focused on military operations. That changed last April when the Kenyan military helped the U.S. set up a public affairs operations center at last year’s Land Forces Symposium in Mombasa, Kenya, where military officials from 23 countries, including senior leaders from U.S. Army Africa, met for the first time in Africa.
Migwi said up to then, the Kenyan Armed Forces had focused on public relations rather than public affairs.
“Public Affairs is a new area we’re trying to get into. We want to promote public affairs and learn from the U.S. Army how they conduct they conduct their business,” Migwi said. “We see it as a new concept we want to get into so we won’t be left behind.”
During their visit at JMRC, Europe’s premier training facility, the Kenyan officers also were given a chance to take part in media training the 2nd Styker Cavalry Regiment Soldiers received during their Mission Rehearsal Exercise.
At the JMRC, not only are soldiers equipped with skills that will help them survive in Afghanistan, they are also given training from the JMRC public affairs staff that will assist them when talking to the media.
Maj. Junel Jeffrey, a planner with U.S. Army Africa who escorted the Kenyans, said the visit to JMRC gave the military officers a bird’s eye of view of how the U.S. military sets up and delivers public affairs training to Soldiers during a mission rehearsal exercise.
“They get a chance to see how the U.S. does it and take that and use it in their own country,” she said.
The Kenyans five-day visit included trips to AFN Bavaria to observe broadcast operations and to Stars and Stripes to observe newspaper news gathering operations, Jeffrey said.
Before arriving at JMRC, Kenyan military sent officers to the Defense Information School in Fort Meade, Maryland, where they completed the school’s Public Affairs Officer Qualification Course, which is a requirement for US military public affairs officers.

The spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon brought in hundreds of students to Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science April 6-7 for 24 hours of creative collaborative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.
NYC Startups, selected by a student organizing committee, presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, after which students formed groups to work through the night implementing their own ideas for fresh hacks built on top of these APIs.
On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel featuring members of the NYC startup community, which selected the final winning teams.
Since April 2010, hackNY hosts student hackathons one each semester, as well as the hackNY Fellows program, a structured internship which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment: a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup in NYC.
To find out what you missed at the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon please do see our HackerLeague event page and blog post announcing the winners.
Special thanks to our spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon judges! And congratulations to the winners of the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon!

youtu.be/ggjGmQ1Welw?t=24s The Lost World ,1925 Silent Full Feature
Directed by William Dowling. Starring Bessie Love, Wallace Beery, Lewis Stone and Lloyd Hughes.
More than 80 years after its release, the first adaptation of "The Lost World" remains as one of the most influential silent films ever, due to Willis O'Brien pioneer advances in the field of special effects, as it showcases the first time stop motion animation was used to create creatures on a feature length film. These innovation was of huge importance for this and future films, and earned Willis O'Brien and his dinosaurs a place in history as an iconic image in film history, only surpassed by another of O'Brien's creations: King Kong.
Based on Arthur Conan Doyle's novel of the same name, "The Lost World" is the tale of Prof. Challenger's (Wallace Beery) epic quest looking for the living dinosaurs who supposedly live in the deep Amazonic jungle, according to the journal of his fellow explorer Maple White, who disappeared in his last exploration. Maple's daughter, Paula (Bessie Love) joins the expedition looking for her missing father, as well as Sir John Roxton (Lewis Stone), an experienced hunter friend of Challenger. Prof. Summerlee (Arthur Hoyt) goes as well, hoping to prove that Challenger is a fraud, and finally, reporter Edward Malone (Lloyd Hughes) joins the expedition, hoping to prove his girlfriend Gladys (Alma Bennet) that he is brave enough to face death.
Cleverly adapted by Broadway playwright Marion Fairfax (who also adapted in 1922 another of Conan Doyle's works, "Sherlock Holmes"), the film is an excellent mix of action and adventure that even when it's not entirely faithful to the novel, keeps the spirit of wonder and fascination with the unknown. From the obsessive Challenger to the incredulous Summerlee, every character is very detailed and for the most part well constructed, giving each one of them a defined personality and a certain degree depth absent in many silent films.
However, the film's best remembered characteristic is the incredible special effects by Willis O'Brien, who after mastering his craft in short films got his first work in "The Lost World" and changed special effects forever. His imagery is very vivid, and very detailed considering the limited resources he had. Sadly, Harry O. Hoyt's direction takes zero advantage of Fairfax's story and O'Brien's effects, and delivers a simplistic and unoriginal work that adds nothing to the whole work and seems to let the cast and crew do their job. It's not a bad direction as a whole, but it feels uninterested on the many possibilities a film like this posses.
The cast is quite effective, and really does a great job with what they have, starting with legendary Wallace Beery, who as Prof. Challenger delivers one of the best performances in a silent film. Without the aid of sound, Beery shows a wide range of emotions in his complex character and is great in both drama and comedy. Lloyd Hughes is very good as the cowardly Malone, and showcases a talent for comedy as well as a romantic figure, as his character shows interest in Paula White, played by Bessie Love, who makes a fine counterpart to Hughes and delivers a natural, and fresh performance. Lewis Stone completes the cast and his dignified performance as Sir John Roxton is very effective.
It's safe to say that "The Lost World" owes more to O'Brien and Fairfax than to O'Hoyt, and that probably with a more experienced director the film would had been even better. However, the film's real problem has nothing to do with the way it was made, but with the way it was preserved during most of its history. Nowadays there is not a complete version of the movie, most home video versions are of the 64 minutes version, while one (Image) is of a 93 minutes reconstruction. And while probably that version is the closest we can be to the original runtime of the film, it sadly has modernized the dialogs, to the point that some lines are rewritten to fit our modern standards.
Hopefully, one day we'll be able to see "The Lost World" as it was intended to be, but meanwhile, we can still appreciate the enormous importance of its amazing special effects, and how it forecasts films like "Jurassic Park" in many ways. This epic tale of action, adventure and horror has probably not seen a better adaptation than this, the movie that set everything for the arrival of King Kong and changed special effects for ever.

She was a beauty--a gold 45 goddess for sure! A Gold 45 Goddess exalts the archetypal form of Athena--the Greek Goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, heroic endeavour, handicrafts and reason. A Gold 45 Goddess guards the beauty of dx4/dt=ic and embodies 45SURF's motto "Virtus, Honoris, et Actio Pro Veritas, Amor, et Bellus, (Strength, Honor, and Action for Truth, Love, and Beauty," and she stands ready to inspire and guide you along your epic, heroic odyssey into art and mythology. It is Athena who descends to call Telemachus to Adventure in the first book of Homer's Odyssey--to man up, find news of his true father Odysseus, and rid his home of the false suitors, and too, it is Athena who descends in the first book of Homer's Iliad, to calm the Rage of Achilles who is about to draw his sword so as to slay his commander who just seized Achilles' prize, thusly robbing Achilles of his Honor--the higher prize Achilles fought for. And now Athena descends once again, assuming the form of a Gold 45 Goddess, to inspire you along your epic journey of heroic endeavour.

Honor Flights to Washington, D.C.’s war memorials increased significantly after Labor Day, as D.C.'s fabled heat (theoretically) transitions to a more favorable fall climate. Groups from Arizona, Florida, Idaho and Chicago were some of the first to arrive in the nation’s capitol Sept. 7 after the federal holiday.
Honor Flight Chicago celebrated its 74th flight since its inception, with 108 participants including 18 World War II and 90 Korean War Vets, in addition to the required support staff of more than 125 dedicated volunteers.
Their day began much earlier than the 6:45 a.m. flight from Midway Airport-Chicago, to Dulles, Va. They boarded buses and drove to the Iwo Jima Memorial where they were met by police motorcycle escort which guided them first to the Air Force Memorial for a performance by the Air Force Drill Team, before crossing the Potomac to the National World War II Memorial.
The group toured the memorial until a color guard honored the Veterans with pomp and circumstance. Center of the group, Arthur Kapinus, 89, a WWII Navy Veteran, held the flag-case filled with veterans portraits dear to members of the Honor Flight Chicago family.
Art was accompanied to D.C. by his brother Bernie, an 81-year-old Army Vet who served in Korea during the mid-50’s. All told, eight Kapinus brothers have served in the military, mostly in the Army and Navy, since World War II. Their brother Joe, whose picture joined five others in the case, served with General Patton and was killed in Luxembourg in January 1945, at age 29.
John Ptak, president of Honor Flight Chicago is not a Veteran, but he has accompanied these flights since 2011, this his 20th trip.
“This is my grandfather, he was in the army in WWII. He passed about 20 years ago, so he didn’t get his Honor Flight,” you can hear emotion in his voice, as he gingerly touches the photo strung round his neck. “I didn’t get a chance to take my grandfather, so I take other people’s grandfathers”.
Some braved the humidity and heat in the 90’s and ventured off to the Korean War, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial before heading back to Dulles Airport. There was time scheduled to visit the relatively new Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum before boarding their flight back home with an ETA after 8pm.
More than 100 additional Honor Flights from around the nation are planned through December with the last for the year currently scheduled for Pearl Harbor Day.
Find out more about the Honor Flight Network, how you can become involved, donate, and meet Veterans as they tour D.C. here: www.honorflight.org/

“Frederick Douglass” Mural
A large, central portrait of Frederick Douglass dominates the mural. His face is encircled by a red and green background, symbolizing his legacy as an abolitionist, orator, and leader.
Next to his portrait is a quote: "It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken adults."
Left Section:
Barack Obama:
A smiling portrait of Barack Obama, wearing a suit, represents modern progress in civil rights and leadership.
Below him, depictions of workers and the struggles of the working class highlight themes of systemic injustice. A text reads: "The worker is the slave of capitalist society, the woman is the slave of that slave."
Rosa Parks:
Rosa Parks is depicted as an elderly figure wearing glasses, holding a book, and surrounded by scenes of her civil rights activism. Below her, a caption reads: "Thank you, Sister Rosa," honoring her role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
Right Section:
Martin Luther King Jr.:
A prominent portrait of Dr. King appears on the right, with the text: I HAVE A DREAM above his image. This references his famous speech advocating for racial equality and justice.
Anti-Apartheid Movement:
The text "APARTHEID NO MORE" is displayed, accompanied by figures like Nelson Mandela and others involved in the fight against racial segregation in South Africa.
Protesters and Activists:
A group of activists is shown holding signs with powerful messages, including calls for equality, justice, and freedom. This highlights the collective action needed to overcome oppression.
Background and Themes:
Historical Context:
The mural juxtaposes historical struggles against slavery, segregation, and systemic injustice with modern civil rights movements and achievements. A depiction of enslaved people working on plantations and abolitionist movements serves as a reminder of the roots of these struggles.
Quotes and Texts:
Various quotes are integrated into the mural, emphasizing themes of freedom, democracy, and equality.
For example, one quote states: "As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy."
Overall Atmosphere:
The mural is vibrant, thought-provoking, and educational, paying tribute to leaders, movements, and ordinary individuals who fought for justice and equality. It serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing journey toward social progress and the interconnectedness of global struggles for human rights.

Riconosciuta come Prima Serie.

Creature from the Black Lagoon, 1954
Most monster movie fans have believed for decades that the design of the Creature was the work of Bud Westmoore, but that is not the case. The Creature's "gill-man" design actually came off of the pen of artist Milicent (Millicent) Patrick. Although the fetching young illustrator never got her name in the films credits she was paraded from film screening to film screening in hopes that her model-like good looks would drum up more publicity for the film. Her contribution to the history of monster films has never been fully given the credit that it so deserves. Unfortunately there a far too many such "unknown heroes" in the genre of horror and sci-fi films.
The Creature's appearance was based on old
seventeenth-century woodcuts of two bizarre
creatures called the Sea Monk and the Sea
Bishop. The Creature's final head was based on
that of the Sea Monk, but the original discarded
head was based on that of the Sea Bishop.
Here we have several shots of Milicent Patrick. Patrick was the person responsible for the look and design of the "Creature From the Black Lagoon".
Universal was already famous for iconic "monster" movies. Frankenstein and Dracula became part of the culture. Creature from the Black Lagoon (CBL) is mostly in the same vein of monster-horror flick, but with a little science in its fiction. Unlike magical or demonic monsters, this one is supposedly a "natural" anomaly of evolution. CBL is often classified as sci-fi, so it's worthy of inclusion here.
Budget-wise, CBL is a B movie, but it's a cut above the usual B crowd. The acting was reasonable. The cinematography was impressive. The only "special" effect was the creature's costume. While the Creature is, in many people's mind, THE icon for man-in-rubber-suit monster costumes, something about the creature found resonance in movie-goers. He was strong enough to merit two sequels.
The producers tapped Jack Arnold for director. Arnold, who directed It Came From Outer Space had an excellent eye. His use of many camera locations, angles, framing and cuts, he lets the camera become invisible. Viewers are in the scene, not simply watching it.
The actors didn't get in the way of the story. Richard Carlson was already a big name in the sci-fi movie world. It Came From Outer Space, Magnetic Monster, and Riders to the Stars. Richard
Denning was a hunky star of many westerns and detective movies. He would go on to star in a few more sci-fi films. The female lead, Julie Adams was perfect as the beautiful damsel. The supporting cast were a little quirky at times, but not as stiff and wooden as second-teir actors tend to be.
Synopsis
A old archeologist, working in the remote Amazon, finds the fossilized hand -- somewhat humanoid, but obviously aquatic. He shows it to some other scientists who agree to mount an expedition to find the rest of the skeleton. While Dr. Maia was doing all this, a creature with the same kind of hand tears up his camp and kills his two native helpers. The scientists spend many days digging and sifting, but come up empty. They decide to go further upstream to the Black Lagoon to search. There, they encounter the Gill-Man. The two scientists are at odds over what's best -- capture the creature alive, kill it and bring it back, study it and leave, etc. All this debate becomes moot when the creature begins killing off crew members. The creature barricades the entrance to the lagoon so the ship cannot leave. The expedition becomes a battle for survival. They manage to drug and capture the creature, but it escapes its cage-tank. It kills Dr. Williams. It then captures the beautiful woman, taking her to his cave lair. The men follow, find her and the creature. After taking several bullet hits, the creature staggers away and dives into the lagoon. The final image is of the creature floating downwards, limp and lifeless.
Why is this movie fun?
This is one of those cultural icon movies that even non-fans of sci-fi know. In that regard, watching it like seeing a celebrity in person. Arnold does a good job with pacing and keeping tension up. It's interesting that the creature gets his own theme music, of sorts. Arnold that the same ascending three note phrase, "do da DEEEEE!" accompany each appearance. The creature's mixture of vulnerability and apparent invincibility, kept you off guard. Spear gun hits or bullets seemed to almost take him down, but not quite.
Dueling Scientists -- Dr. Reed (Carlson) represents the "good" side of science. He wants to study the creature, but not interfere or harm anything. He wants to expand the field of knowledge for altruistic reasons. Dr. Williams (Denning) represents the dark side of science. He's focused on the fundraising potential, the economic cost of expeditions. When confronted with the creature, he's all for killing it (not so much for the safety of the others) in order to bring it back for exhibition. This dualism of scientists is somewhat two-dimensional, but works as a sub-theme.
Many B-grade sci-fi films show their low-budget monster as little as possible. CBL breaks that rule in a big way. Viewers get several partial views right away (the hand) and not too far into the film, a full view of him. Since the producers didn't cheap out on the gill-man's costume, viewers aren't let down. He looks, moves and acts much one would think a gill-man would.
The gill-man is not simply a killing machine type of monster. His curiosity with (attraction to) Kay makes him more complex. In the swimming sequence (a strong foreshadow of the swimming girl scene in Jaws), he swims along with her, unseen, in a sort of parallel dance. He, the ancient, strong and primal male matching moves with the lithe, beautiful, innocent female. Some suggest that the gill-man's popularity was how well he echoed the adolescent male condition: awkward, unattractive, misunderstood, full of rage, attracted to beautiful women, but insecure approaching them. The big scene, in which the gill-man grabs Kay off the boat and swims her down to his cave lair is easily a young male fantasy.
CBL has the classic they're-after-our-women scene. It lives up to the poster art. The gill-man grabs the woman and runs (swims) off with her. He carries her in his arms toward his lair. Unlike other versions of this classic image, the gill-man appears to actually want the woman.

A billowing heart made of wire netting filled with hundreds of tiny dichroic plexi squares refracts the spectra of light in all directions. Benches under lightposts encircling the heart provide a place to hunker, commune and daydream. Like the exuberance of colors reflected by this heart, always-present and ever-shifting, this heart conjures the thousands of expressions and materializations of love prospected in the human experience.
