THE FREEDOM OF SLAVERY
Welcome to the world of rural prostitution, a world you wouldn’t want to get too close to.
Neither as a sex worker nor as a client.
A very rough paradigm where political correctness and human respect as we know it are not conceivable.
A photographic reportage in the last rural brothels of the Dominican Republic.

MTA Service Specialists are preparing to perform at the rally.
Facebook group "1,000,000 People Against the NYC MTA Fare Hike" organized a rally against the second proposed fare hike within months. Speakers from Transportation Alternatives, NYPIRG Straphangers Campaign, Working Families Party, Keep New York Moving Coalition, COMMUTE as well as public figures and teachers spoke to a large crowd in Union Square Park today.
They are asking New Yorkers to reach out to government about what will be a historically unprecedented 25% rate hike, which possibly could be avoided if the State Senate comes back from vacation to address.

She was a beauty--a gold 45 goddess for sure! A Gold 45 Goddess exalts the archetypal form of Athena--the Greek Goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, heroic endeavour, handicrafts and reason. A Gold 45 Goddess guards the beauty of dx4/dt=ic and embodies 45SURF's motto "Virtus, Honoris, et Actio Pro Veritas, Amor, et Bellus, (Strength, Honor, and Action for Truth, Love, and Beauty," and she stands ready to inspire and guide you along your epic, heroic journey into art and mythology. It is Athena who descends to call Telemachus to Adventure in the first book of Homer's Odyssey--to man up, find news of his true father Odysseus, and rid his home of the false suitors, and too, it is Athena who descends in the first book of Homer's Iliad, to calm the Rage of Achilles who is about to draw his sword so as to slay his commander who just seized Achilles' prize, thusly robbing Achilles of his Honor--the higher prize Achilles fought for. And now Athena descends once again, assuming the form of a Gold 45 Goddess, to inspire you along your epic journey of heroic endeavour.

There is a danger of running out of superlatives when trying to describe Beverley Minster. It is not only the second finest non-cathedral church in the country but is architecturally a far finer building than most of our cathedrals themselves! It will come as a surprise to many visitors to find this grand edifice simply functions today as a parish church and has never been more than collegiate, a status it lost at the Reformaton. What had added to its mystique and wealth was its status as a place of pilgrimage housing the tomb of St John of Beverley, which drew visitors and revenue until the Reformation brought an end to such fortunes and the shrine was destroyed (though the saint's bones were later rediscovered and reinterred in the nave). That this great church itself survived this period almost intact is little short of a miracle in itself.
There has been a church here since the 8th century but little remains of the earlier buildings aside from the Saxon chair near the altar and the Norman font in the nave. The present Minster's construction spans the entirety of the development of Gothic architecture but forms a surprisingly harmonious whole nevertheless, starting with Early English in the 13h century choir and transepts (both pairs) with their lancet windows in a building phase that stopped at the first bays of the nave. Construction was then continued with the nave in the 14th century but only the traceried windows betray the emergent Decorated style, the design otherwise closely followed the work of the previous century which gives the Minster's interior such a pleasingly unified appearance (the only discernable break in construction within can be seen where the black purbeck-marble ceased to be used for certain elements beyond the eastern bay of the nave). Finally the building was completed more or less by 1420 with the soaring west front with its dramatic twin-towers in Perpendicular style (the east window must have been enlarged at this point too to match the new work at the west end).
The fabric happily survived the Reformation intact aside from the octagonal chapter-house formerly adjoining the north choir aisle which was dismantled to raise money by the sale of its materials while the church's fate was in the balance (a similar fate was contemplated for the rest of the church by its new owners until the town bought it for retention as a parish church for £100). The great swathes of medieval glass alas were mostly lost, though seemingly as much to neglect and storm-damage in the following century than the usual iconoclasm. All that survived of the Minster's original glazing was collected to form the patchwork display now filling the great east window, a colourful kaleidoscope of fragments of figures and scenes. Of the other furnishings the choir stalls are the major ensemble and some of the finest medieval canopied stalls extant with a full set of charming misericords (though most of these alas are not normally on show).
There are suprisingly few monuments of note for such an enormous cathedral-like church, but the one major exception makes up for this, the delightful canopied Percy tomb erected in 1340 to the north of the high altar. The tomb itself is surprisingly plain without any likeness remaining of the deceased, but the richly carved Decorated canopy above is alive with gorgeous detail and figurative embellishments. There are further carvings to enjoy adorning the arcading that runs around the outer perimeter of the interior, especially the north nave aisle which has the most rewarding carved figures of musicians, monsters and people suffering various ailments, many were largely restored in the 19th century but still preserve the medieval spirit of irreverent fun.
To summarise Beverley Minster would be difficult other than simply adding that if one enjoys marvelling at Gothic architecture at its best then it really shouldn't be missed and one should prioritise it over the majority of our cathedrals. It is a real gem and a delight to behold, and is happily normally open and welcoming to visitors (who must all be astonished to find this magnificent edifice is no more than a simple parish church in status!). I thoroughly enjoyed this, my second visit here (despite the best efforts of the poor weather!).

The Checkers, built in 1926, is with Winchelsea (1923) opposite one of Manly’s finest examples of inter-war residential flat buildings. There appears to have been a close working connection established between The Checkers and The Astor next door. It has been said that the staff who serviced The Checkers were accommodated next door in The Astor.
Kudos to *JC*2 for identifying this as a Plumed basilisk:
"The plumed basilisk, Basiliscus plumifrons, also called a green basilisk or double crested basilisk, is a species of lizard native to Latin America. Its natural range covers a swath from Mexico to Ecuador."

"The Academy of Natural Sciences is the oldest natural science research institution and museum in the New World. It was founded in 1812 by many of the leading naturalists of the young republic with its expressed mission of "the encouragement and cultivation of the sciences." For over nearly two centuries of continuous operations, the Academy has sponsored expeditions, conducted original environmental and systematics research, and amassed natural history collections containing more than 17 million specimens. The Academy also has a long tradition of public exhibits and educational programs for both schools and the general public."

ENGLISH
The dam of Mediano is located in the municipal term of La Fueva, to which it was gotten up Mediano in 1974, whose nucleus had been flooded by the dam. It is one of the greater ones of Aragón, with 1,714 Has. of surface and a volume of dam of 450 Hm.3. Its prey leans in the limestone wooded hills that form the straits of El Entremont in the Cinca river, at few kilometers of the tail of the dam of El Grado. It is destined fundamentally to water lands of the zone, and secondly to the production of electrical energy.
--------------------------------
CASTELLANO

Wednesday 23 October 2013: Nyaung-U (ညောင်ဦးမြို့) - Mt Popa (ပုပ္ပားတောင်) - Bagan (ပုဂံ)
A free day, so I succumbed to the morning excursion to Mt Popa (ပုပ္ပားတောင်). En route we stopped off at a jaggery farm/shop where we got to try some of the sweet stuff, and tea leaf salad too. Mt Popa itself proved to be a lot more free from monkey hassle and monkey shit than I'd expected from the reviews. It was interesting to follow local families making the pilgrimage to the top of the holy mountain and the views from the top were superb, but overall the trip felt rather tame, and - naturally - the price turned out to be a little higher than first suggested, due to the high quality, air conditioned, private hire car transport. No guide either.
Back in Nyaung-U (ညောင်ဦးမြို့), Clare, Anthony and I lunched at Weather Spoon's before resisting the lure of chocolate cake (made with chocolate imported from Belgium...) and peddling off back to Bagan (ပုဂံ) to visit the excellent Archaeological Museum, which came with an added bonus encounter with a group of Buddhist monks. And let's not forget the 55 ladies hair styles on show....
We made lots of scenic stop offs our way back to Nyaung-U (ညောင်ဦးမြို့), including a detour into the village of Taungbi in pursuit of some decorated ox carts (which turned out to be transporting tourists rather than the hoped for wedding party, but hey....), and an ascent of Gubyaukgyi (Wetkyi-in) as the dusk gathered - no sunset again, but lots of photos.
For dinner, Anna, Miriam and I feasted on Burmese salads and fruit smoothies courtesy of Weather Spoon's, with banana fritters for pudding. We'd all be sad to say farewell to Bagan....
