Lindsey Vonn ist nach überstandenen Magenproblemen wieder auf die Siegesstraße zurückgekehrt.
Die 27-jährige US-Amerikanerin, am Vortag bereits Abfahrtszweite, gewann am Sonntag den Super-G in Cortina d'Ampezzo überlegen vor der Deutschen Maria Höfl-Riesch (+0,61 Sek.) sowie der Slowenin Tina Maze (0,86). Als beste Österreicherin wurde Weltmeisterin Elisabeth Görgl (0,97) Vierte.

Retired Korean general visits Camp Humphreys

CAMP HUMPHREYS – Retired Gen. Paik, Sun-yup, the first four-star general in Korean history, visited Camp Humphreys on May 24.
Besides being his country’s first four-star general, Paik also served as Korea’s minister of transportation and ambassador to Taiwan and France.
At Humphreys, Paik was greeted by Mark Cox, United States Army Garrison Humphreys deputy commander. Cox gave a briefing that addressed Humphreys transformation. The number of Soldiers stationed at Humphreys is expected to grow in the coming years by 238 percent, from 6,670 to 22,497, and the number of families is on track to grow by 1,270 percent. To accommodate the new arrivals, Humphreys is in the midst of the largest construction project in the history of the Department of Defense.
“I am really pleased to hear that construction on post has been going well,” Paik said. “That speaks well of the post commander and leadership.”
Paik also met with Korean Augmentation to the United States Army (KATUSA) Soldiers, who were impressed with the retired general.
“Despite his age, it was evident he still had very strong willpower,” said Cpl. Ahn, Ji-hawn, a KATUSA. “He was also very ambitious and I was extremely impressed. It was such an honor for me to meet him.”
“This was one of those experiences that you remember for life,” added another KATUSA, Cpl. Kim, Jong-hyun. “He is a legendary general and it was such an honor for me to meet him and listen to his words. This was a great experience for me.”
Paik then received a windshield tour of post and had lunch at the Alaska Mining Company.

Der Max-Josefs-Platz – früher der Innere Markt und Schranne – wurde 1984 zur Fußgängerzone. Der historische Marktplatz ist umgeben von Bürgerhäusern im typischen Inn-Salzach-Stil (hochgezogene, horizontal abgeschlossene Fassaden; Arkadengänge; Erker). Die Häuser entstanden nach dem großen Brand von 1641. Im Kern stammen sie teilweise aus dem 14. Jahrhundert. Vormals schmale Holzhäuser wurden zu stattlichen Patrizierhäusern zusammengefasst. Das Wirtshausschild am Haus Stockhammer zeigt einen Schiffszug. Das Weinhaus Fortner „Zum Santa“ wurde 1642 gotisch umgestaltet und 1745 mit einer Frührokoko-Stuckatur versehen. In der Weinstube ist eine gotisches Gewölbe enthalten. Das Haus Nr. 22 war von 1641 bis 1878 das Rathaus von Rosenheim.

I met Karoona with her family after a Krishna Das Kirtan at St Andrews Wesley Church. Three hours of spirited music and chanting & the room was full of glowy happy people.
Krishna Das and his devotional chanting has many enthusiastic supporters. The man received much applause and responded in a humble 'non-celebrity' fashion. I liked that, a Kirtan hopes to use group chanting to unite us, not to glorify any single talent.
In that spirit, I befriended Karoona and featured her in a portrait with Krishna Das as a part of the background. She has a beautiful family, you can also see her daughter in a red dress.

No fueron uno ni dos aluviones los que asolaron el departamento de Ancash, en el norte de Perú, en el siglo XX. Fueron por lo menos cinco, importantes, que provocaron cientos de muertos. En algún caso fueron miles, como ocurrió en la ciudad de Yungay la tarde del 31 de mayo de 1970, hace 45 años, cuando millones de metros cúbicos de hielo provenientes del Huascarán, el monte más alto del Perú (6.768 metros) se desprendieron a raíz de un terremoto de 7,7 grados de magnitud.
El saldo fatal fue de cerca de 15.000 víctimas mortales que se sumaron a otras 50.000 más causadas por el mismo sismo, que devastó numerosos pueblos, ciudades y carreteras. Mark Carey, profesor de Historia de la Universidad de Oregón, norteamericano de origen, se ha internado por esta tormentosa ruta glaciar para, además de hacer su tesis doctoral, producir el libroGlaciares, cambio climático y desastres naturales, una obra que deshiela el pasado y el futuro.
Un aluvión de aluviones
También el presente, por supuesto, porque persiste la amenaza de una avalancha de origen glaciar en este país, que ha sufrido la mayoría de desastres de este tipo en todo el planeta. La saga que explora Carey comienza con el aluvión de Huaraz (capital del departamento) en 1941, que produce más de 4.000 muertos; sigue con el de Chavín, que acaba con la vida de unas 500 personas, y continúa con el de Los Cedros, que mata a por lo menos 200.
Las mayores tragedias, sin embargo, ocurren en la década de los sesenta. En 1962, Ranrahirca, una ciudad ubicada al pie del Huascarán, como Yungay, es arrasada por un aluvión causado por un inmenso bloque de hielo desprendido del nevado, que baja devorando campos, pueblos y vidas. Sólo ocho años después llega la hecatombe de 1970, que en su momento remeció a Ancash, al Perú, a todo Sudamérica. Al mundo entero porque fue una de las fatalidades sísmicas más grandes.

¿Qué ocasiona esto, qué mantiene la amenaza latente y qué descubre Carey? En este territorio, hermoso como pocos, denominado por algunos como "la Suiza peruana" por su parecido con el país alpino, existen una cadena nevada denominada, por visibles y hermosas razones paisajísticas, Cordillera Blanca. Podría decirse que, incluso, tiene un parecido con Nepal, esa nación hoy agobiada por dos sismos y que también ha sufrido avalanchas en el Himalaya.
Son cerca de 600 glaciares distribuidos a lo largo de unos 200 kilómetros, varios de ellos de más 6.000 metros de altura, y que hacen vecindad con el Callejón de Huaylas, un valle verde y deslumbrante que yace a los pies de este conjunto de montañas, que Carey en una parte llama "el hielo asesino de los Andes". No es para menos, por lo ya descrito y por registros históricos a los cuales el autor se asoma, que hablan de tragedias similares ocurridas en los siglos anteriores.
La glaciología pionera
Como en otras zonas del mundo, el retroceso glaciar avanza en la Cordillera Blanca. El cambio climático lo agudiza y puede aumentar el riesgo de desastres. / ERNESTO BENAVIDES
Esa combinación de presencia sobrecogedora y poblaciones vulnerables —debido a que, tras la Conquista, se asentaron en lugares donde el hombre prehispánico no lo hizo— ha resultado literalmente mortal desde el siglo XX, antes y hasta la actualidad. En los últimos años, como bien se desprende de las rigurosas líneas de Carey, un germinal pero incipiente cambio climático fue, lenta pero terriblemente, estimulando las tragedias de origen glaciar.
A pesar de de establecer con precisión las coordenadas científicas de estos fenómenos, el autor va más allá porque justamente busca otra cosa: establecer cómo cambió la sociedad ancashina por estos dramáticos hechos, cómo se relacionó con el Estado y cómo se generó, por las desoladoras consecuencias de los aluviones, una generación de científicos peruanos, de glaciólogos, que fue realmente pionera en el estudio de los hielos a nivel mundial.
Lo que hace Carey es Historia Ambiental con mayúsculas, una disciplina que recién crece al ritmo del cambio climático y otras señales del ambiente que invitan a revisar nuestro devenir en la Tierra con ojos más inclusivos. En el caso de las tragedias ancashinas, percibe el surgimiento de ese núcleo profesional, que se especializa en el tema a causa de las desgracias y que terminan “actuando como intermediario entre el gobierno nacional y el Callejón de Huaylas”.

En ese viaje siguieron ocurriendo los aluviones de origen glaciar, pero la glaciología peruana hizo un aporte desde la periferia al centro, como bien apuntó en la presentación del libro el historiador Jorge Lossio. A la vez, también ocurrieron hechos penosos, como la resistencia de algunos estratos sociales a la reconfiguración de la ciudad de Huaraz, tras el aluvión de 1941, una pequeña y penosa historia que el autor del libro relata con cierto minucioso detalle.
“El aluvión erosionó los indicadores de esta distinción social”, sostiene Carey al describir esas resistencias, que incluso hicieron que muchas personas insistieron en ponerse en el mismo cono aluviónico, con lo que aumentaban su propia vulnerabilidad. Simultáneamente, aparecerían en el escenario los turistas, las empresas que edifican hidroeléctricas y otros actores que van configurando lo que en el mundo académico contemporáneo se llama economía del desastre.
La privatización de los glaciares
Se produjo una trágica falta de visión de parte de algunas autoridades y pobladores, que trataba de ser contenida por los glaciólogos, que hasta proponían traslados. No siempre fueron escuchados y tuvieron que convenir en hacer drenaje de lagunas, algo que sirvió para evitar algunas desgracias pero no pudo evitar otras. Ya en los noventa, Carey registra la impronta de la nueva economía, de la globalización y la apertura de mercados aterrizando sobre los hielos tropicales.
El hielo de estas montañas inmensas suele agrietarse por las lluvias, por los sismos o por el cambio climático. Entonces crece el peligro de las avalanchas. / ERNESTO BENAVIDES
Lo llama "la neoliberalización de los glaciares" y es un tiempo en el cual las grandes empresas pisan fuerte en los glaciares ancashinos, sobre todo la norteamericana Duke Energy, que insiste en represar algunas de las cerca de 400 lagunas de origen glaciar que, como consecuencia de los deshielos, existen en la zona. El súmmum de esta deriva es el cierre de la Unidad de Glaciología y Recursos Hidrológicos en tiempos del presidente Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) que, al son de la privatización, llegó al extremo de desproteger a la población cerrando esa entidad.
Dicha instancia era heredera de otras anteriores (Comisión de Lagunas, Corporación del Santa, por el río que recorre el Callejón y otras), y ya había incurrido en la tentación de pensar más en la generación de energía que en el riesgo potencial de desastres para los pobladores de Ancash. Pero los tiempos fujimoristas, tan llenos de corrupción y desatado ultraliberalismo, parecen haber sido los peores, pues “significaron mayor vulnerabilidad ante las amenazas glaciares”.
En su navegación por esta cordillera nevada, Carey se encuentra además con una falsa alarma emitida por la NASA en el 2003, en torno a una laguna denominada Palcacocha, ubicada al pie del nevado Cupi. Revuelo, desesperación, a partir de una "grieta ominosa en el hielo", que no fue tal, como luego demostraron los glaciólogos peruanos. En los hechos, la ciencia "de la periferia" le enmendaba la plana a un organismo de ese nivel, que no supo diferenciar el hielo de la roca.
La amenaza latente
Las lagunas glaciares han sido drenadas por años, para evitar desastres. Pero en los últimos años se ha puesto en valor su potencial hidroeléctrico. / ERNESTO BENAVIDES
Al momento de escribir estas líneas, la Unidad de Glaciología en Ancash vive otra vez, ya que fue restablecida en el gobierno de Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006). Duke Energy sigue allí, como propietaria de la Hidroeléctrica del Cañón del Pato, y las inmensas montañas aún muestran su manto blanco. No obstante, en los últimos años el cambio climático ha ido derritiendo parte del paisaje y las esperanzas de este lugar, uno de los más hermosos y espectaculares de la Tierra.
Se estima que, desde 1970, los glaciares de la Cordillera Blanca han retrocedido al menos en un 30%. Uno se para en la ciudad de Huaraz y ya no se ve tanta nieve en las montañas circundantes, como cuando ocurrió el destructor aluvión en 1941. Aún así, o precisamente por eso, por el derretimiento de los hielos supuestamente eternos de los Andes, la peligrosa amenaza persiste y esta historia de Carey lo cuenta, lo advierte. Lo registra con rigor y emoción.

Der Damen- Riesenslalom zum Weltcup- Auftakt in Sölden ist am Samstag mit einer Überraschung, dem Sieg von Lindsey Vonn, zu Ende gegangen. Es handelt sich um den ersten RTL- Triumph der US- Amerikanerin, die damit die erst fünfte Läuferin der Geschichte ist, die in allen fünf Disziplinen Siege landen konnte. Auch das ÖSV- Team hat Grund zur Freude, denn Lizz Görgl (+0,40 Sekunden) wurde hinter der Deutschen Viktoria Rebensburg (+0,04) Dritte. Die Italienerin Federica Brignone, Führende nach dem ersten Durchgang, schied im Finale aus.
Neben Görgl schafften auch die Salzburgerin Anna Fenninger und die Niederösterreicherin Kathrin Zettel als Sechste bzw. Siebente den Sprung unter die Top Ten. Für Michaela Kirchgasser (14.), Stefanie Köhle (16.) sowie Jessica Depauli und Andrea Fischbacher, die zeitgleich 26. wurden, gab es ebenfalls Weltcuppunkte.

Situación: Plaza de San Francisco.
La actual iglesia de San Francisco el Grande se edificó sobre el primitivo convento de franciscanos que, según contaba la leyenda, había sido fundado personalmente por San Francisco de Asís en 1217.
Aquella iglesia estaba fuera de las murallas medievales y constituía el núcleo de un arrabal, como lo habían sido San Andrés en Puerta de Moros y San Ginés en el Arenal.
En el antiguo San Francisco fueron enterrados algunos miembros de grandes familias como Ruy González de Clavijo, Enrique de Villena y la reina Doña Juana.
Este convento de franciscanos y el de benedictinos de San Martín (en la plaza que conserva su nombre, junto a las Descalzas) fueron los más antiguos de Madrid, mucho antes de la explosión constructiva de conventos de todas las órdenes religiosas, que tuvo lugar tras la decisión de Felipe II, en 1561, de ubicar la Corte en Madrid de forma permanente.
El convento de San Francisco adquirió suma importancia cuando en él se instaló la Obra Pía de Jerusalén, una institución que custodiaba los Santos Lugares conquistados por los cruzados y que llegó a manejar notables cantidades de dinero gracias a donaciones y legados forzosos.
En 1760, al poco de instalarse en el trono Carlos III, quien sentía profunda admiración por la orden de San Francisco de Asís, se tomó la decisión de derribar el viejo convento y levantar uno nuevo, con la cúpula más grande (33 metros de diámetro) que jamás se hubiesen atrevido los arquitectos españoles a construir.
Los modelos a imitar fueron tanto el Panteón de Roma, la cúpula por antonomasia y punto culminante del arte de construir (43,40 metros de diámetro), como la iglesia del Santo Sepulcro en Jerusalén, con su cúpula, de profundos significados templarios.
En un Madrid conventual donde todas las bóvedas y cúpulas del siglo XVII se habían construido encamonadas, es decir, colgando falsos techos de escayola de humildes vigas de madera, la ambiciosa media naranja, que Fray Francisco Cabezas proyectó para el nuevo templo, significaba un reto para la técnica constructiva de los arquitectos barrocos madrileños, que ocultaban sus caducos modos de proyectar con alardes decorativos, auténticos fuegos de artificio, tan brillantes como efímeros.
Ante el elevado coste de las obras, el Papa tuvo que permitir la concesión de 18 millones de reales, de los 36 millones que había acumulado la Obra Pía de Jerusalén, para continuar el templo.
En 1768 Fray Francisco Cabezas se rindió, cansado de luchar contra Ventura Rodríguez, que no se resignaba a que su proyecto hubiese sido rechazado por los frailes y el Ayuntamiento y que desde la Academia ponía toda clase de trabas a la continuación de los trabajos. Cabezas se retiró a su Valencia natal, donde murió en 1763. Los muros de San Francisco llegaban entonces hasta la cornisa y los arquitectos Ventura Rodríguez y Diego de Villanueva se enzarzaron en agria polémica sobre los refuerzos con los que había que suplementar los machones entre capillas, para poder aguantar el empuje de la cúpula.
De nuevo la cobardía se apoderó de los corazones de los arquitectos. La Academia de Bellas Artes decidió suprimir el tambor de la cúpula, rodeado de columnas, del primitivo proyecto de Cabezas, a quien había ayudado Hermosilla en el dibujo y definición de los detalles.
Un casi desconocido Antonio Plo recibiría el encargo de iniciar la cúpula directamente desde la cornisa, descartando definitivamente el tambor que hubiese levantado la cúpula, dando gran esbeltez al perfil del templo.
En 1776, harto el rey Carlos III de tanta incompetencia, impuso a su propio arquitecto, el siciliano Francesco Sabatini, autor de obras tan excelentes como la Puerta de Alcalá o la Real Casa de la Aduana (Ministerio de Hacienda). Francesco Sabatini, ayudado por Miguel Fernández, terminó de cubrir la iglesia, realizó la fachada clasicista y contruyó el convento.
José Bonaparte, el hermano de Napoleón instalado a la fuerza en el trono de España, quiso utilizar el templo como Salón de Cortes, encargando los planos a Silvestre Pérez, quien ideó el primer Viaducto sobre la calle Segovia, que debía unir el entorno del Palacio Real con San Francisco el Grande.
En 1836 la Desamortización de Mendizábal hizo que todos los conventos de frailes retornasen a los Patronatos, es decir, a las familias que habían fundado el convento y habían heredado, generación tras generación, los derechos y obligaciones sobre los diferentes monasterios.
San Francisco el Grande pasó a depender de la Obra Pía de Jerusalén y ésta se secularizó, vinculándose a las estructuras administrativas del Estado (actualmente al Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores).
Tras la Revolución antimonárquica de 1868 se pensó utilizar la iglesia como Panteón Nacional y se llegaron a trasladar los restos de algunos hombres ilustres.
En 1878 Cánovas del Castillo decidió utilizar la fortuna acumulada por la Obra Pía de Jerusalén para decorarlo con magnificencia. Según el historiador Elías Tormo se llegaron a gastar 28 millones de pesetas, cantidad astronómica para la época.
Tras la Guerra Civil volvieron los franciscanos al templo, aunque el convento había sido derribado para ampliar la Gran Vía de San Francisco, que une el Viaducto con la Puerta de Toledo.

Hoy acabo esta serie del parque de la naturaleza de Cabárceno. Y lo hago con una secuencia en tres fases de la bocaza de este bellezón. Se trata de un hipopótamo enano. Este es un macho, y como veis es tan guapo como yo. Tiene cara de simpático, eso si, cuando abre esa bocaza impone, vaya si impone.
Volveré a Cabárceno, y espero conseguir más fotos como las de esta serie que me han divertido mucho.
Ahora comienza el fin de semana y se abren nuevas oportunidades fotográficas. A saber que traeré el Lunes........

Group of Monuments at Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The austere, grandiose site of Hampi, located in the Tungabhadra basin in Bellary District, Central Karnataka (India), was the last capital of the last great Hindu Kingdom of Vijayanagar. Its fabulously rich princes built Dravidian temples and palaces which won the admiration of travellers between the 14th and 16th centuries. Conquered by the Deccan Muslim confederacy in 1565, the city was pillaged over a period of six months before being abandoned.
The sophistication of the varied urban, royal and sacred systems is evident from the more than 1600 surviving remains that include forts, riverside features, royal and sacred complexes, temples, shrines, pillared halls, Mandapas, memorial structures, gateways, defence check posts, stables, water structures, etc. The remains unearthed in the site delineate both the extent of the economic prosperity and political status that once existed indicating a highly developed society!

"Since its release of about 2000 diplomatic cables (as of January 7th, 2011), Wikileaks has been subject to extraordinary pressures, seemingly at the behest of the US government. Amazon and EveryDNS have denied Wikileaks internet service and Visa, Mastercard, Paypal, and Bank of America have been prevented supporters from donating money to Wikileaks. This is despite the fact that Wikileaks has not even been charged with a crime.
Unfortunately, the situation has gotten even worse. The press has been spreading lies about Wikileaks. Mainstream media outlets do not appear to be doing even the most rudimentary fact-checking. The most blatant of these lies is the idea that Wikileaks has “indiscriminately dumped 250,000 cables on the internet”. This is flat-out false.
A few news organizations, including NPR and InformationWeek, have corrected this mistake, and NPR has even offered an apology. By contrast, most news organizations ranging from the AP to the Wall Street Journal continue to print this falsehood.
We call upon all news organizations to correct previous articles and statements, to issue apologies to their readers, and to take steps to prevent this mistake from occurring in any future articles and shows.

On that day, we will be joining in protesting against the repression of Wikileaks with many others around the world, including Washington, DC, and several cities in Canada and Australia.
To counter the New York Times’s censorship of reality, we plan to publish the released cables on the walls of their building. In addition, participants will be provided cable printouts and markers and encouraged to throw down their artistic abilities by adding a graphic representation of their favorite cable to the Cablegate Coloring Book.
