About

New swing sextet, New York oldest Vibe driven sextet, and still performing "salsa that keeps the dancers moving and the Dj's pumping"

Biography

ABOUT THE NEW SWING SEXTET

A product of New York City and the excitement and turbulence of the sixties, the New Swing Sextet made its professional debut performing in the Singer Bowl at the last New York Worlds Fair in 1965... The band has been a popular and innovative exponent of Latin jazz, salsa and pop music for nearly four decades.

Composed of vocals, piano, vibes, bass and Latin percussion, the original New Swing broke up in the late seventies after successfully recording, touring and doing all the hot club dates that the New York metropolitan area had to offer. In recent years most of the groups core members have reunited and have been performing with Mambo Negro the highly popular Latin jazz ensemble, which performs regularly in and around the tri-state area. However, you can't buy or replace 40 years of history, and on special occasions the band performs as the New Swing. The New Swing offers an established and respected name with a sound from another era, which has been perfectly preserved and bottled for another generation to enjoy.

The band was part of a young crop (and new breed of aspiring Latin musicians) who grew up in the greater New York Metropolitan tri-state area with its rich ethnic mix and diverse inner-city culture, while at the same time growing up surrounded by the Latin music explosion happening in the region. The Palladium and other clubs were dancing to the music of Machito and his Afro-Cubans, and the Jose Curbelo Orchestra while Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Eddie Palmieri, Joe Cuba, and Cal Tjader, among many others, had already established their unmistakable sounds. In the early sixties, every other city block in New York had a Latin band and a doo-wop group. Blend these many elements together and you get the influences that shaped the New Swing Sextet and their contemporaries, including Johnny Colon; the Lebron Brothers; Willie Colon, Joe Bataan and Pete Rodriguez groups that helped pioneer a new street sound (which would eventually become Latin Boogaloo and Salsa). The New Swing Sextet would join the Alpha Artists of America (under the Management of Jose Curbelo) and ultimately record 4 long albums (and have a separate Best of the New Swing Sextet) all under the Cotique label. The band regularly performed on popular TV shows such as El Club de la Juventud con Polito Vega; The Tito Puente Show with host Sofi; and El Show de Myrta Silva among others. It was a magical time to be a performing Latin artist in New York City. A fraternity of great musicians and legends in the making, routinely performing together at the great dance clubs of the day, including: The Corso; LaMaganette; The Chez Jose; La Mancha; The Colgate Gardens; The Psycho Room; The Tropicoro; The Cheetah and at all the great battle of the band venues such as The Hunts Point Palace; The Manhattan Center; The Riverside Plaza Hotel and The St. Georges Hotel. Over a ten-year period the New Swing performed all summer-long at popular resorts and at the summer home of Latin music: las Villas. The band has also toured extensively and performed at world famous venues such as the legendary Apollo Theatre; the South Street Seaport and Webster Hall in New York City. Recent performances to large audiences in Montreal, San Francisco, & Los Angeles, proved that the band still has plenty of sabrosura to keep the dancers on the floor.

www.thegoldensieve.com/the-golden-sieve/elk-and-fog-and-surf

We emerged from tapestries of ferns and stepped from carpets of riverstone onto the strand, onto the lip of the park, where the ocean battered furiously upon the sand. There were grasses tenaciously clinging to what purchase they could find, in turns buffeted by the wind and the erosive storms that—eating hungrily into California—left tooth marks upon the bluffs crowned with redwoods.

In the sea were stacks, the ruins of former headlands impossibly still standing in the maelstrom. We walked to the timpani of the surf beating out a ceaseless summer rhythm. There was fog rolling inland, Klamath in my mind is forever wreathed in the fog spattered forth by the churning brine. The twisted remains of former giants lay amongst the grasses, bleached by salt and sun, a testament to the marginal nature of life where land meets sea. The bluffs were and are still, crawling with their kin. We chased the surf back and forth like children where the rogues had carved a grade into the coarse, brown sand. And there were elk, grazing, proud, and fearless upon the primeval strand.

Soldiers have blast at beach

By Cpl. Han, Jae Ho

BORYEONG — Approximately 500 Soldiers from Korea gathered at Daecheon Beach June 15-17 for the 2012 Beach Blast, sponsored by Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers.

The festivities included DJ on the Beach, barbecue, rock climbing, limbo, volleyball, sand sculptures, fear factor, twister and tug-o’-war.

“We hope that you radiate youthfulness and passion during the festival, make good friends and have unforgettable memories,” said Boryeong Vice Mayor Jeon, Yoon-soo. “U.S. Soldiers always make the summer at Daecheon Beach entertaining every year, and we hope to see you at the Boryeong Mud Festival as well. Thank you to all Soldiers, volunteers and staff members who make this even possible and contribute to strengthening the ties between U.S. and Korea.”

Participant Tom Stout said the Beach Blast lived up to its name.

“It is a great opportunity for Soldiers to see what kind of activities are out there. BOSS handled all of the reservations for hotels and made it very easy for Soldiers to enjoy the beautiful town and beaches.”

“I have participated in this event the last three years, and this one exceeded all,” added Brian Bentz, who worked command and control for the event. “We had a great time. Everyone had fun. I can’t wait to go back next year.”

The Sea Rabbit (Monafluffchus americanus) of Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York – This unique sea-dwelling rabbit, which is actually a close relative of the sea lion, was officially discovered and investigated by Henry Hudson when he first visited this land to colonize the area by order of the Dutch government. It was named New Amsterdam -- today’s New York City. This island was named after he saw the beach covered with strange swimming wild rabbits. The word “Coney Island” means “wild rabbit island” in Dutch (originally Conyne Eylandt, or Konijneneiland in modern Dutch spelling). Sea rabbits were also referred mermaid rabbit, merrabbit, rabbit fish or seal rabbit in the natural history documents in the 17th century. The current conservation status, or risk of extinction, of the sea rabbit is Extinct in the Wild.

This website features two species of sea rabbits, which have been taken care of by Dr. Takeshi Yamada (山田武司) at the Coney Island Sea Rabbit Repopulation Center, which is a part of the Marine biology department of the Coney Island University in Brooklyn, New York. They are – Coney Island Sea Rabbit (Monafluffchus americanus) called “Seara” and Coney Island Tiger-striped Sea Rabbit (Monafluffchus konjinicus) called “Stripes”.

The photographs and videos featured in this website chronicle adventures of the Coney Island sea rabbits and the world as seen by them. This article also documented efforts of Dr. Takeshi Yamada for bringing back the nearly extinct sea rabbits to Coney Island in the City of New York and beyond. Dr. Yamada produced a series of public lectures, workshops, original public live interactive fine art performances and fine art exhibitions about sea rabbits at a variety of occasions and institutions in the City of New York and beyond. Dr. Yamada is an internationally active educator, book author, wildlife conservationist and high profile artist, who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Sea Rabbit

Other Common Names: Coney Island Sea Rabbit, Beach Rabbit, Seal Rabbit, mer-rabbit, merrabbit, Atlantic Sea Rabbit.

Latin Name: Monafluffchus americanus

Origin: Atlantic coast of the United States

Description of the specimen: In the early 17th century’s European fur craze drove the fleet of Dutch ships to the eastern costal area of America. Then Holland was the center of the world just like the Italy was in the previous century. New York City was once called New Amsterdam when Dutch merchants landed and established colonies. Among them, Henry Hudson is probably the most recognized individual in the history of New York City today. “This small island is inhabited by two major creatures which we do not have in our homeland. The one creature is a large arthropod made of three body segments: the frontal segment resembles a horseshoe, the middle segment resembles a spiny crab and its tail resembles a sharp sword. Although they gather beaches here in great numbers, they are not edible due to their extremely offensive odor. Another creature which is abundant here, has the head of wild rabbit. This animal of great swimming ability has frontal legs resemble the webbed feet of a duck. The bottom half of the body resembles that of a seal. This docile rabbit of the sea is easy to catch as it does not fear people. The larger male sea rabbits control harems of 20 to 25 females. The meat of the sea rabbit is very tender and tasty.” This is what Hadson wrote in his personal journal in 1609 about the horseshoe crab and the sea rabbit in today’s Coney Island area of Brooklyn, New York. Sadly, just like the Dodo bird and the Thylacine, the sea rabbit was driven to extinction by the European settlers’ greed. When Dutch merchants and traders arrived here, sea rabbits were one of the first animals they hunted down to bring their furs to homeland to satisfy the fur craze of the time. To increase the shipment volume of furs of sea rabbit and beavers from New Amsterdam, Dutch merchants also started using wampum (beads made of special clam shells) as the first official currency of this country.

At the North Eastern shores of the United States, two species of sea rabbits were commonly found. They are Coney Island Sea Rabbit (Monafluffchus americanus) and Coney Island Tiger-striped Sea Rabbit (Monafluffchus konjinicus). Sadly, due to their over harvesting in the previous centuries, their conservation status became “Extinct in the Wild” (ET) in the Red List Endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Currently, these sea rabbits are only found at breeding centers at selected zoos and universities such as Coney Island Aquarium and Coney Island University in Brooklyn, New York. The one shown in this photograph was named "Seara" and has been cared by Dr. Takeshi Yamada at Coney Island University.

The sea rabbit is one of the families of the Pinniped order. Pinnipeds (from Latin penna = flat and pes/pedis = foot) are sea-mammals: they are homeothermic (i.e having high and regulated inner temperature), lung-breathing (i.e dependant on atmospheric oxygen) animals having come back to semi aquatic life. As soon as they arrive ashore, females are caught by the nearest adult male. Males can maintain harems of about 20 females on average. Several hours to several days after arriving ashore, pregnant females give birth to eight to ten pups with a dark brown fur. As soon as birth occurs, the mother’s special smell and calls help her pups bond specifically to her. The mother stays ashore with her pup for about one week during which the pup gains weight. During the first week spent with her newborn, the mother becomes receptive. She will be impregnated by the bull, which control the harem. Implantation of the embryo will occur 3 months later, in March-April. During the reproductive period, the best males copulate with several tens females. To do so, males have to stay ashore without feeding in order to keep their territory and their harem. In mid-January, when the last females have been fecundated, males leave at sea to feed. Some of them will come back later in March-April for the moult. The other ones will stay at sea and will come back on Coney Island only in next November. After fecundation, the mother goes at sea for her first meal. At sea, mothers feed on clams, crabs, shrimps, fish (herring, anchovy, Pollock, capelin etc.) and squids. When she is back, the mother recovers her pups at the beach she left them. Suckling occurs after auditive and olfactory recognition had occured. In March-April, the dark brown fur is totally replaced by an adult-like light brownish grey fur during the moult that lasts 1-2 months. This new fur is composed by 2 layers. Externally, the guard fur is composed by flat hairs that recover themselves when wet. By doing so, they make a water-proof barrier for the under fur. The underfur retains air when the seal is dry. Because of isolating properties of the air, the underfur is the insulating system of the fur. In March-April, the fur of adults is partially replaced. First reproduction occurs at 1-yr old in females. Males are physiologically matures at 1 year old but socially matures at +2 years old.

NOTE: The name of Coney Island is commonly thought to be derived from the Dutch Konijn Eylandt or Rabbit Island as apparently the 17th century European settlers noted many rabbits running amuck on the island.

Dozens of businesses in Cincinnati were damaged on the evening of May 29, 2020 and the following morning. Earlier in the day, a peaceful protest took place in response to the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. After 11pm, the situation escalated and a riot began. There is growing evidence that the rioters were not affiliated with the peaceful protestors, and may have been bad actors who infiltrated the protests to cause chaos and incite violence.

On May 30, businesses in the Central Business District and Over-the-Rhine neighborhoods began boarding up their storefronts to prevent further damage. Many of these businesses had just began reopening as Ohio relaxed restrictions that were put into place due to the Covid-19 pandemic, only to shut down again.

For many Cincinnatians, these events brought back memories of the 2001 riots that took place after a Cincinnati police officer shot and killed Timothy Thomas, an unarmed African American man.

I had the unbelievably good fortune of spending three weeks in the Alps this past fall for work, and although there was very little spare time for things like photography, I found my way out once or twice in the early morning or late evening to make a few photographs. As I was traveling, I used the Sony RX1 almost exclusively and was pleased (as always) with the truly excellent image quality it produced in all situations (hoping to put out my "One year with the Sony RX1" review before the new year). Without waxing poetic, here are a few images I collected during the trip, enjoy!

Glenwood Cemetery's Avenging Angel: A Shooting Victim's Family's Vengeance Plot Fails

By John Nova Lomax Mon., Oct. 22 2012 at 2:30 PM

Glenwood Cemetery, the final resting place for Howard Hughes and many other exemplars of Houston's high and mighty, is full of marble angels. All wear melancholy countenances, or tender half-smiles, all except for the one standing guard over the grave of William Dunovant.

A South Carolina-bred rice and sugar planter and would-be railroad magnate, Dunovant and business partner William T. Eldridge founded the Cane Belt Railroad in 1898. At first, the Cane Belt was used to transport sugarcane from Dunovant's plantation near the town of Bonus ten miles north to Lakeside, which was near Eagle Lake, but eventually the line was extended from Sealy all the way to the Gulf.

Perhaps that was an overambitious plan, because by 1902, the Cane Belt was floundering, and Dunovant's shares had been bought out and he had been removed from his position as president. Eldridge, also a sugar planter, stayed on the board as vice-president. Dunovant was none too pleased with that arrangement.

Yes, the Cane Belt's cargoes may have been sweet, but by August of '02, things were definitely sour between Dunovant and Eldridge. According to the Southwestern Historical Quarterly, Dunovant was reportedly going around Eagle Lake calling Eldridge a liar, a cheat, and "a dog-faced sonofabitch," and he also publicly threatened to kill Eldridge.

Dunovant never got the chance to make good on that promise. On August 11, as Dunovant boarded a passenger car of a train Eldridge was already aboard, Eldridge got the drop on him. After emptying his revolver into Dunovant, Eldridge pounced upon his bleeding body and pistol-whipped Dunovant's head hard enough to lacerate the scalp.

Dunovant's corpse was taken to Glenwood for burial. The Avenging Angel, brandishing its fierce sword and with the crazy eyes that look like those you see in the mugshots of the women on Lifetime's all-female true-crime show Snapped, was commissioned by Dunovant's sister. It truly lives up to its billing as "a specter bent on revenge."

It turns out that the Dunovant family would not content themselves with leaving their lust for payback in supernatural hands.

Eldridge was charged with Dunovant's murder, bonded out, and returned to his home in Eagle Lake, a town full of Dunovant's friends, family members and supporters. Barely two months after Dunovant's demise, a Dunovant partisan named W.T. Cobb blasted his shotgun at Eldridge as he was walking up his front steps. Cobb missed and was charged with attempted murder and acquitted on September 26, 1903. Strike one for the Avenging Angel.

The months dragged on. Eldridge's attorneys reset his case over and over again, and Eldridge defiantly remained in Eagle Lake.

Team Avenging Angel struck again on June 6, 1904. W.E. Calhoun, Dunovant's brother-in-law, sniped Eldridge out of a second-story window in downtown Eagle Lake. Calhoun's aim was true -- the 30-30 Winchester shell ripped through Eldridge's right lung and chest just above the heart, continued through his left hand and finally lodged in the side of a windowsill at the Eagle Lake depot.

Calhoun was arrested as he attempted to leave the building from which the shot was fired, but none of the witnesses on the scene would testify against him. He was no-billed by a Colorado County grand jury.

Which was probably of lesser import to Calhoun than the fact that Eldridge miraculously survived the attack. Strike two.

Eldridge finally did get the message that perhaps living in Eagle Lake was not exactly conducive to his continued existence on the planet, so on July 4, he announced his planned move to Houston, along with his resignation from the Cane Belt Railroad.

In November, Eldridge finally had his day in court and was acquitted on grounds of self-defense. You'd think that would be the end of it, but by this time Eldridge was out for blood. Weeks after Calhoun was no-billed, he had the misfortune to board a train Eldridge was already riding, and Eldridge wasted no time in reprising the original murder by filling Dunovant's kinsman with lead before he could draw his pistol. Calhoun's body was taken to Glenwood and interred next to Dunovant's ferocious-yet-hapless Avenging Angel, who had now officially struck out.

As for Eldridge, after again pleading self-defense and again winning an acquittal, he eventually wound up in Sugar Land, where he allied himself with Galveston's wealthy Kempner family. With their backing, he helped buy a 20,000-acre sugar plantation and refinery, which was later reorganized and modernized under the new owners as mighty Imperial Sugar, with Eldridge serving as manager. He also bought and sold seven railroads in his remaining years, which sound as if they must have been quite comfortable, despite the two holes in his body from Calhoun's 30-30 shell.

With a population of 200, Sugar Land had been on the point of withering away when Eldridge arrived; by the time he died, in 1932, it had 2,500 residents. That's one reason Eldridge Road and Eldridge Parkway both bear his name today.

Better Bigger on Black

When I was in Nebraska this summer visiting Grandma, I did a little photo shoot for all her fellow residents. I think they had as much fun as I did. I have been so homesick (an busy) since I got back that I haven't been able to do the edits yet. I am finally getting around to them today. This is by far my favorite portrait of the day... and what a character she was. I haven't seen someone with this much personality in a long, long time. I only wish I could read all the stories those beautiful lines on her face could tell.

She did tell me that her Daddy arrived in Lewellen at the age of 15. He had been punchin' cattle but decided to settle in the same tiny town she is in now.

I love the earrings she was wear too! She had arrived to breakfast with them on the day before declaring that "Sometimes, ya just gotta feel special!"

(*re-edit* I had done my mono conversion of this on my laptop but was never happy with it. This is more like what I wanted!)

Fojas 105 f. a 109 V.

Clearly we are witnessing a significant cultural shift happening alongside the political and ideological shifts occurring alongside today's presidential inauguration. When the media from FOX news, NPR, NBC, New York Times to widespread public expression through commercial means (t-shirts, posters, shot glasses, and comics) are all in harmony praising the changing of power in Washington, there is something truly unique taking place. When was the last time a President Elect generated this kind of excitement? The only Bush-Cheney t-shirts I recall were parodies and critiques.

I have a greatly improved state of mind today regarding the future of our country and our world. I have been disappointed, sad, angry, shocked, and dismayed repeatedly over the course of the last eight years. I know there will be very tough, contentious times ahead that will divide people into factions. However, I believe Obama's fundamental approach working to unite people of various beliefs will go a long way toward improving the dysfunctional government we've sadly come to expect. A new day has dawned for America and the world. Let us all hold forgiveness and cooperation in our hearts. Hatred should have no place in the soul of true Americans committed to democracy, freedom, prosperity and peace.
